Between this episode and the last, I hit 1000 subscribers - thank you!!! Today we have the Virus TI Polar which is an incredibly powerful little synth. It's particularly popular among EDM musicians, but it's capable of an enormous variety of sounds. I like to think of it as the DSP power of a nice virtual instrument but in a physical box you can take on the road. It can sound analog, it can sound digital, it's one of those synths that just sounds good no matter what you're wanting. I just used a Kawai K4 MIDI'ed up when I want a wider playing range.
Check out my synth duo at:

Far out demo! You demonstrated both its EDM application and its versatility in such a short video. Great strategy of using the Kawai for the 61-note range. If ever I purchased a Virus myself, I would either choose a 61-key edition or go with the module and a controller of my choosing such as my S90XS.

@@Phctn i paid about 1200 plus about another 100 shipping germany to US. Polar, great shape, no issues, a couple minor cosmetic imperfections. I paid low enough that I'm satisfied, but i probably could have saved even more if I waited a little longer. i saw another at 1k-ish some time after. 1k is a fine price, about as good as it gets for a TI 61 key. But you could get one in better shape for around the same 1k. For me i'd wait for the next one. im not paying a grand for something with a broken screen, but thats just me. and a bad backlight is a rarity from what ive seen so you wont be waiting long. I cant tell you want to pay, but the lowest i see them go on ebay is from around 1000 to 1300 if im patient, so for me i decided those are the prices im willing to pay. they also go for 1500 or 1700 or more. and it doesnt seem to even matter which model. even the desktops sometimes. these are all ebay/reverb prices by the way.

@@vforvillain77 Thanks for your detailed response man! I've really been stressing out about it. Now that I have looked on ebay I see some of the TI 61-key have sold from $800-$1200 & they look like they are in good condition. I've been trying to talk this dude down to 900 but he is just being ignorant. Even though the back light is out he is stressing to me that it is a simple $80 fix... but still wont come down $100 because of it LOL. He is local which is easy but his attitude towards this thing has thrown me off. I've been wanting a Virus TI since I was a kid and now that I have the money I'm kinda impatient and just ready to create with the thing. So who knows I might wait... I might not :D

@@uhoh007 yes, the UBXA is a nice alternative with it being a big analog polysynth and from what I've heard on KZbin a good mimic of the mighty Oberheim without the hefty price tag. It is limited in sound design compared to the Access Virus, but sometimes that is a good thing, in that you can have too many options which takes you away from making music, I've done it myself spending hours making up new sounds.

This has been on my "wish list" for ages now. Unfortunately even though it's approaching "near antique" status, it still seems pricey (at least on cursory glance.) I know you say in the description that use a separate 61 key Midi keyboard when desiring more than 32 keys. Even so, how often is the number of keys an issue? I have a hunch that my concern isn't warrant. A) my favorite artists that use this device never seem to have an issue with it, nor have they expressed the desire to upgrade to the model with more keys. And b) my worry is probably both misplaced and biased. My very first Casio keyboard that I received in pre-school only had something like 44 keys. (It wasn't a toy though - I took lessons and everything. Lol actually it probably *was* a toy - I was forced to take lessons seriously before "earning" a grownup keyboard. Fast forward to Junior High and my first Midi keyboard/electric piano only had 61 keys. In both cases I regretted not having more keys practically every single day. ) But I was a fool kid who knew nothing with the first keyboard. And although I regularly regretted not having all 88 keys (especially playing classical piano sheet music) after 10 years of lessons by Jr high, I *still* knew nothing. (I just ironically regressed to unconscious incompetence.) LOL...*therefore* wonder if I should trust the musicians with talent that far exceeds anything I will ever be capable of with (not to mention concepts like minimalism.) Or should I trust my "gut feeling" with all its described problems? (Lol sorry and thanks for reading this way too long post. I almost didn't even post it as it's embarrassing long and rambling for its lack of depth. But I spent longer than I care to admit writing this. (I didn't even get into the differences between classical sight-readng and EDM!) So I might as well post. Plus I truly am curious and hopefully I will finally buy one of these wonderful devices soon!)

It’s entirely personal preference. I’d prefer 61 key for something like a virus. I like big extended chords and bass notes combined. 37 is plenty for bass lines and melodies, but it’s not a lot of room for two handed playing. So it’s just a preference, how you are as a player, and above all, it’s a way for the manufacturer to have a lower cost product.

Doesn’t really matter if it’s not a factory preset or one I’ve tweaked. And if it is a factory preset, you can just…find it, assuming you have the synth.

I feel a little conflicted about this. I think it sounds good, but at the same time, I think it's lacking in low end. It obviously works amazing for pad sounds and digital sounding stuff, but there is a certain tinge to it that doesn't quite convince me for the more virtual-analog stuff-maybe I'm just a purist.

I didn't really demo a lot of low-end sounds, to be fair. I definitely didn't get the impression that this thing lacked low end. Personally, I find that some synths have too much low end that I have to carve out in a mix. Conversely, some synths like the Minilogue are too weak in low end for my taste.

@@tritonrecordings I've been watching some videos and listening to people's sounds on the Virus just to see if I like it. But yeah, I definitely agree with you on the minilogue, though I do find its analog waveshaping stuff really nice for soundscapes

@@fermiLiquidDrinker For sure, I've gotten great use out of my minilogue. The Virus sounds great, don't get me wrong. Easily one of the best VA's, and excellent for touring. It kinda sounds like a virtual instrument to me, like Omnisphere but in hardware form. But having this on stage is a million times cooler than having a lap-- a lapt- I'm gonna be sick just saying it...a laptop on stage...bleghhh

The Virus can go deep, very deep and boomy. You have to “program” it. This demo didn’t do much that as he stated. But check out UltimateXsounds bass patches. Or search Access Virus TI/TI2 bass.

Great synth. I would like to own one but it's just too expensive for it's age.

I think you are judging it on the wrong parameters.. if its expensive still even second hand it means it must have a value to some beyond the typical 'older' synth .. I'm still not seeing anything of this type on the market that can match it. Love my Ti2 desktop and the whole package is still unmatched imho.
