Good video. Just note that that little eyelet on the end of the rope is there so you can attach the loose end of the rope to the opposite side of the spool to ensure the entire loose end stays under the rest of the rope as it is spooling to guarantee it is trapped. It’s not there to hold under tension., it’s to ensure it has more than one wrap holding tension.

Tutorial right to the point and makes sense on how to respond the rope. Couldn’t find many videos on the can am hd series winch on cable removal - step by step - couldn’t find one. This is the best, but still wanted to see the cable coming off the spool. Good video though.

Steel ropes typically don't fail all the time like the synthetics do. An ATV winch doesn't have much pulling power so there's not much risk of an overload failure. Steel won't be trashed by minor abrasion.
@MudPuppyOffroad
@MudPuppyOffroad Жыл бұрын
High quality stuff like amsteel is very abrasion resistant. It's also much safer than steel and a lot nicer to your hands when you're dealing with it
@mp-xt2rg
@mp-xt2rg Жыл бұрын
@@MudPuppyOffroad everyone says much safer. I don't think that holds true when it comes to low power winches like ATV winches. The break strength of 1/4 steel winch line is 8000lbs on a 3000lb winch that's a lot of margin. The synthetic line will break after 12-24 months of moderate use. The steel likely never will. So if it's between one that will break and one that won't which is actually safer?
@MudPuppyOffroad
@MudPuppyOffroad Жыл бұрын
Will I have good news for you they still sell shity outdated steel winch line for people like you! And it's cheaper. It's very simple from an engineering perspective synthetic winch lines stores a small fraction of the energy that a steel winch line does which means if it does fail it just falls to the ground it doesn't send a clevis through someone's forehead but you do you the rest of us will enjoy the tangle free easy spooling synthetic

The winch will come in handy loading up the Quad in the back of my pickup until I decide on a dedicated trailer - other than that I'll have to find a big boulder to secure it to if I need to get myself or someone out of a jam - but I'm not intending on doing anything crazy because I don't particularly want a 700 pound machine squashing me like the Ginger Bread man 😆

lol, I like the way you said if you aren't doing it this way you are doing it wrong. I'm sure there are other good ways to do it. I'm trying to figure out how to attach a rope without the little cap screw because when I took my steel cable off the screw is too short to go through the hole in the synthetic. I also don't have a hole in the drum, I will eventually figure it out.

Why not just splice it on? Through the hole, into the hole next to it and back out, then back in itself. No knot and you can pull it all the way out till it stops every time no problem. You’re basically just spicing it to one side of the drum. Soon as you put 1 turn on it, it’s centered back on itself on the loop other side of the splice. Maybe I’m doing it wrong…
@MudPuppyOffroad
@MudPuppyOffroad 7 ай бұрын
Splicing it would work great but significantly more effort. I've never had one pull out of the winch with this method and it's very quick to change out a tope on the trail

@@MudPuppyOffroad hell yea. I just figured I’d share I guess. I have this way on front winch but a splice on back one.
@MrT13
@MrT13 7 ай бұрын
Maybe you could try this, but what I do is splice it on first. Then if it breaks, there’s always a couple feet left to which I think it’s still quicker to cut it at 3’ sticking out. Then shove the new spare line into the 3’ sticking out, about 18” from end. Then take that 18” and into new back and forth couple times then finish inside new. Still way easier than having to get your hands up in there every time. When it breaks again it’s easy to remove everything back to that original 3-4’ and do it again. I only ever splice it once on the drum. But I re splice new spares onto original every time. Like I said it’s quicker than getting your hands in there every time. Also means you can eventually splice on and start using 5/16 which I haven’t broken yet. If you use 42-45’ of 1/4”. Your 5/16 fill to the same will be about 36-38. And as long as you got 1-2 turns on 5/16. You won’t break it unless you try. 7700 vs 12300. You lose 6-8’ and it’s still connected to the drum… I now run 1/4 on front 5/16 on back. It’s the way. My .02
