Guitarist Daron Malakian, who wrote the Song along with lead singer Serj Tankian, has been quoted as saying: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die."

Corey: "I don't know anything about the song, but the name sounds real familiar." Uh yeah, it appears on every Chinese takeout menu you've ever seen 🤣
@Jaspertine3 ай бұрын
Funny enough, the term Chop Suey actually translates to "odds and ends" and was probably originally just a dish made out of leftovers before coming overseas and having a more specific meaning in the West. The Canadian dish known as "poutine" has a similar origin.
@TheMonkeydela2 ай бұрын
Evidently the name of the song was "Suicide" during production. Their producers wanted a more subtle name so they were forced to change chop the name in half, Chop/suey. (Just finished the video and I see Corey pointed that out lol)

System of a Down was formed in the 90's by 4 Armenian Americans in Cali... Serj Tankian (vocals), Daron Malakian (guitar/ vocals), Shavo Odadjian (bass) and John Dolmayan (drums)... They were an unorthodox mix of punk rock, extreme metal and Mediterranean music... They were signed by producer Rick Rubin (who worked w/ Beastie Boys, Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, etc.) and their debut self-titled album was released in 1998... Tours opening for Slayer, and then, Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest tour in '98 and '99 solidified System of a Down's fanbase and the album sold gold in the US (half million copies) 2nd album 'Toxicity' was released in 2001 and it charted at #1 in the US after the success of the singles - "Chopsuey!" ... 'Toxicity'... 'Aerials'... The record was a sonic leap from the 1st album and sold 6x platinum (debut album would sell 2x platinum) 3rd album 'Steal this album!' was released in 2003... System of a Down used the single 'Boom!' to protest their dissatisfaction w/ the US invasion of Iraq in '03...the album sold platinum w/ little promotion. 4th and 5th albums 'Mesmerize' and 'Hypnotize' were recorded simultaneously and released months apart... both charted at #1 and sold platinum... But singer Serj Tankian was experiencing changes to his vocals and clashed musically w/ guitarist Daron Malakian... As a result, System of a Down has not released any new albums since... but tour often to promote their catalog of music. They did recently release 2 new songs to raise support for their native country Armenia in their recent war against Azerbaijan. Serj Tankian launched his solo career in 2007, releasing the album 'Elect the dead'... followed by 'Harakiri' in 2013... he still releases new records... Guitarist Daron Malakian formed a new band Scars on Broadway... bassist Shavo Odadjian has a new band Seven Hours of Violet.

I love watching people who've been in a one music genre bubble discover different genres and artists. And also discover that metal isn't just demonic growling and evil lyrics. That is just a small part of metal music. I've read an article about a study they did about metalheads and people who listen to classical music. Turned out they have a lot in common. Music wise and character wise. Pretty interesting.

Olli, you guys touched on the subject of this title very naturally. The band wanted to name the song the S-word, but were censored. So they chose Chop Suey instead. That’s the reason for Serj’s look of exasperated boredom while eating his Chinese takeout 3:40 . Thanks, guys.

They are a bad ass band. They did a cover of Wu Tang's Shame on a Nigga that was fuckin phenomenal. They also covered Snowblind by Black Sabbath and Metro by Berlin. Every one of their albums is a banger. Of course check out their most popular songs. The one that always stuck out to me was Mr Jack. Unfortunately they don't make any new music(except for 2 tracks 3 or 4 years ago on bandcamp for support of Armenia) but they do tour regularly on their vast library. They realized they liked to play together but not write together.

@@theshadowfax239 Damn, I forgot all about that one. I downloaded it from Kazaa back in the early 00s. As far as the Wu-Tang cover, I actually tracked down a copy of Loud Rocks at a record store back then because it had so many good covers and collabs. Incubus, Big Pun, RZA, MOP, Mobb Deep, Tom Morello, etc.

Funny story. Rick Ruben said they were stuck on how to come out of the bridge and he told the lead singer to go to his bookcase and grab the first book you see and start reading the first thing you see. He grabbed the Bible and it said, “Father, Father, in your hands I commend my spirit, why have you forsaken me?” That’s the genius of Rick Rueben

No it isn't, it's readily available, easily digestible, regurgitate pap. The best of metal won't just fall in your lap, you have to dig for it, you have to want to hear it. Watching the singer die inside while performing a censored cover of Holiday in Cambodia, to a condo full of the people the song is talking about was as close to metal as he'll ever get.
