System of a Down’s classic Rick Rubin-produced album “Toxicity” turns 20 this year. Released in 2001, one week before 9/11, the politically charged and wildly bizarre album provided the perfect soundtrack for a world descending into chaos.
Serj Tankian, the lead singer of System, is no stranger to conflict. His family is Armenian and migrated to Los Angeles from Lebanon to escape a civil war when Serj was 7 years old. In LA he grew up in a tight-knit Armenian community along with the rest of his younger System bandmates.
As Serj’s star began to rise in the late ‘90s, his activism intensified. And to this day he continues to raise awareness around the Armenian genocide and the impact of corporate greed. Last month he released the documentary called “Truth To Power” which documents the intersection of Serj’s work as a musician and an activist.
Today we’ll hear Rick Rubin talk to his good friend Serj about how hearing bombs drop outside his childhood bedroom turned him into a lifelong activist. Serj also explains how a pretty odd and funny line about a tapeworm almost caused System of a Down to break up, and why the first time Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine heard System play, he called it music for crazy people.

And most unique face. That billy goatee smile. I just wanna lightly tug his goatee lol I love looking at him. I wish I can contact him, I have a huge opportunity for him to consider. He's the literally perfect one to for this mission I'm on for the behalf of Atomic Veterans. No one knows what an Atomic Vet is but they are the forgotten Atomic bomb guinea pigs of nuclear radiation exposure and clean up. It was a cover up until 40 years ago. Until a whistle blower got former president bill clinton to lift the order of silence on the men who suffered secrecy. They couldnt tell their family friends or fellow comrades. They suffered severe untreated radiation poisoning and the worst kind of ptsd. Many men were ground zero vaporized or skin melting off. Some men were so scared that they were screaming for their mothers. It's too big of a story but I need Tankian to hear me out considering his his views and his outreach. I tried to message him but I'm sure my message is equivalent to a grain in the sand. So i think email or possibly patreon. Either way I'm gunna keep trying as this is a time sensitive issue. -SERJ "REVOLUTION, THE ONLY SOLUTION! AN ARMED RESPONSE FROM AN ENTIRE NATION." #PLUCK

@Lucas Novaes as far as screams go (and I'm not a trained vocalistls/screamer btw, just an amateur) it sounds like his sound could easily be simple fry screams. But yeah indeed, Serj wasn't a trained vocalist, but I think that has its value considering the impact of toxicity on the music industry

System of a Down was my first favorite band. I didn't really care about music, then SOAD completely blew my mind away and I became a music nerd. I remember they came into my world when I was 8, right around 9/11, when Chop Suey was getting radio play. I got Toxicity for my 9th birthday and they've been my favorite band ever since. Steal This Album! came out the next summer and I was totally hooked. My mom would let me blast Toxicity in the car on the way to school 😎 I remember her explaining to me as a kid what cocaine and groupies are because of the song "Psycho." And tapeworms...

Well this was just delightful. I can't believe its 20 years old, man. That is terrifying. Their first two albums were such a key part of my highschool experience. I'd heard Spiders before (coming from my older brother's room) and thought it was cool, but never looked into who the band was. Then years later I heard Forest. And that song blew me the fuck away. Something about it struck me deep. It felt like I'd heard it before. So after that I was right into them. I couldn't get enough.

I listened to the shiiiittt out of the self titled album and toxicity when I was around 13/14. Chop suey had just released here in the UK and it was everywhere. A friend came round one evening and had one of those rascal burnt CD's that he'd put together using 'nero fire burner' or whatever it was back then (lol). It was a random compilation of songs/artists. As soon as he came in I quickly scurried over to the glass cabinet where my dad had his 3 disc CD player with wireless Sony headphones (this was 2001!). My friend wandered off to go play on the N64 or whatever. The first song was Prison song. I hadn't heard anything other than chop suey before this. I remember vividly hearing that first chord. Then the silence.... I'm sat on the floor and I looked at the CD player to check that it hadn't stopped. Then 'Duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh!!!' with the infamous Serj whispering 'theyre trying to build a prisonnnnn'... Must of listened to that song about 8 times in a row just sat on the floor. I was hooked. Managed to get the full album burnt onto cd and I'd listen to it every. Single. Day. For about a year. In between that I'd managed to get the self titled album and they'd both get played every day. It's funny because back then, being 13 years old I just liked the sound of the music. I didn't pay too much attention to the lyrics etc. Now all these years later I find myself going back to give those albums a listen and I appreciate them for completely different reasons than I did back 20 years ago. Even though system still tour, I can't help but feel it's over. They're older and not in their prime anymore. Toxicity and the self titled albums are snapshots in time and hearing/seeing the band now makes me sad. It's a glaring reminder that time is coming for us all and nothing stays the same forever, no matter how badly we want to hold onto it.

Just a brilliant blistering opening track to start that album, as well as Daron is just sprinkled in to compliment Serj's brilliant delivery. I really enjoy majority of SOADS catalog but Daron's voice can be irritating at times where Serj's voice would have worked better in alot of the songs where Daron takes over. Just an observation coming from a big fan. Also, Daron has many times tried to force being weird and quirky and would come across as kind of doink failing miserably at comedic antics which would make Serj uncomfortable and noticably embarrassed. Finally, if one is going to play a snippet of a cover tune as a filler between songs, learn how to play it properly and do it justice or it comes across lame and amateurish. Oh yeah, playing out of tune is never acceptable. Not bagging on Daron to be a jerk, I really appreciate his creativity and talent but since he is the lead member and the creative wellspring for majority of the material, he has to accept constructive criticism which would be a part of demanding to be the only spokesperson for the band. If they really wanted to give fans a new album, try it the way Serj so eloquently listed his demands which took every members input equally important. And after that Serj would be more than happy to return to some of the old methods. Serj's outline is more than fair and seems like Daron is the one holding back on this.... And sorry, not buying the library of 4.albums of material, I think that there would be a lot of retreads of passed material and would be doing a lot of the same thing like Serj wants to avoid.... Just an opinion.

I saw the tour they discuss, after 9/11. Prior to the attacks, the american flag was hung upside down outside the venues and was in reference to the label of the production company. typically, the upside-down flag is a symbol of a country in distress. when i walked up to the venue in portland, oregon, i noticed the flag was hung rightside up. it was hard to miss, as it was an absolutely huge flag, which i loved. their intent, to me, was immediately clear. even though the country was indeed in distress, it would've been seen as disrespectful, especially by the people who don't understand the meaning of an upside down flag. serj referenced the attacks while onstage. while i don't recall the content of what he said of the attacks, what i do recall is feeling humbled, almost....schooled, in a sense? i dunno. i recall they played a surgical set that i quite enjoyed. slipknot followed. great show. great band. great time to have seen them live. they were forever cemented, in my reckoning, as relevant activist artists. thanks for this podcast.

I remember hearing 'sugar' on T95 late at night in Wichita round '99 or 2000. Me and my buddy looked at eachother and couldve sworn it was from a new s.o.d. album (stormtroopers of death)

System of a down is definitely chaotic, but there is so much truth in it because they are a reflection of the world.

I remember being in school and watching 9/11 go down. For years I was upset with the situation and wanted revenge like most Americans. Then bands like “system” shined the light on the business of war. Without that I think the political climate wouldn’t have changed as easily.

Oof i remember exactly when toxicity came out. At the same time it came out, i met my ex-fiance'. And he played toxicity repeatedly for months. I never got sick of it either, but this song always reminds me of that time lol

27:00 concerning my age and socialization at the time, it didnt sound "far out there" but rather, where I wanna go, while music today sounds either like a re-combination of old things or "far out there" like IGORRR or perhaps animals as leaders, although those bands arent quite that young anymore either ^^'

@@13hills exactly. music is his medium, but he could be a coach in any arena. I often think about mentors like him that exist on a spiritual level, but there is proof in what he does- that is to say bringing out some of the best music his artists have ever made.

I had to look up Toxicity and this was the first thing that came up. I was singing it while I wrote up a conversion cheat sheet for metric to imperial. Also, how does one own disorder? 😂

@@AxlFG is there an article that speaks on this? Every fan would love another Soad record. I missed the chance of seeing them in 2019 (I think) headlining day 1 of Open Air Chicago. I saw Tool at the same festival the next day which was amazing, but I wish I saw SOAD too.
