Damn. I interpreted the "somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep" as a metaphor for the time that you are alive. The sacred silence was before you were born, and sleep is the eternal rest after your die, so to speak. And what happens in between is the "disorder" and chaos of your life. Boy was I wrong haha
@Hyldegarda4 ай бұрын
Imo it is disorder. He didnt finish or say completely the answer. He stated sacred silence being meditation and sleep. Where also in sleep you have the moment where u sort of meditate. Im not discarding Serj (for obvious reasons), im saying he didnt sort of completely answer directly or correctly the question. Soad is my r1 band ever in life and WILL stay that way forever

I appreciate Serj’s candid response about not having much hope. I think most people feel that way at times and talking openly about those fears, and even having a laugh about it, can be liberating. Saying I feel hopeless about humanity and then having a human empathize and level with you is actually helping to displace that feeling of hopelessness, because it’s proving it wrong. I often feel like we are doomed but I’m at a point in my life and journey where I think that even if that is true, I can look back on my role on this planet and be proud. I can look at my kids and think that they are good people who are making positive impacts in their circles. We can’t save the whole world, but we can serve our friends and our families and our communities and if everyone lived that way the world would be saved. Not everyone does, but that is outside of our reach of influence. Fixating on things outside of your control takes you away from making positive changes within your realm of control 🖤

Had i not been a fan of Serj and system I would have never known the Armenian genocide ever took place. I was the only person in the class that wanted to cover the topic. The most shocking part of the Armenian genocide is how well the crimes were swept under the rug and disregarded by history as time continued to pass. Twenty something years ago I was hanging out with a friend which I grew up with, he had this Sony discman which was a big hit at the time, his older brother was into heavier music and arts and my highlight of the day was hanging around at his house and being in awe by all the figurines, posters, and many other artsy stuff in his room, one day I see my friend with his discman out in the neighborhood listening and I say "whats up bro" , he's like you gotta listen to this band bro. He gave me the discman for a half an hour, inside was the album toxicity, instantly I was in love, awe, rage, and 1000 feelings I couldn't explain as I was so young and misinformed about the world, music and art. Every day I would borrow the discman as I really didn't have any money to purchase my own. I was falling asleep with Toxicity and Steal this album, I was drawn into the being and music by SOAD, one day I decided I wanted to sing like Serj and learned all the lyrics from those albums but it was really challenging to copy that amazing voice of yours Serj, I did my best and while hanging around the city park where all the metalheads, punks, and skinheads were hanging around I was playing and constantly singing SOAD songs and me and my friend were known for being the SOAD fanboys, later I started a band and was the singer in the band and my friend became the drummer, SOAD connected us and was the main reason to become artistic, listening to Johns drumming later got me into drumming and I was literally learning every song from SOAD on the drums and became a drummer, many years and bands later I'm still a drummer but I never stopped singing, screaming and expressing myself artistically, YOU and YOUR music are the main reason for me becoming what I am today, I still listen to your albums and all of your solo music and albums and take myself back to those simpler times as a kid. I never been to any concerts as we grew up in a small and poor country on the Balkans. I never watched my favorite band of all times Live and I'm ashamed by that. Rainn Wilson, when I first watched THE OFFICE, I immediately fell in love with your character and that type of humor is the most honest, brutally sincere and amazing for me, I play THE OFFICE almost everyday and laugh my ass off. I can't believe I get to watch this podcast with two of the people I respect and are one of the greatest artist of our generation. It’s so reassuring hearing Serj talk about how he would “binge and purge on music” when he was in his formative years as an artist. That is exactly what I experience as well. I will go through a few months of heavily listening to dnb, to a few months of black metal to a few months of hip-hop, to a few months of folk music or industrial music. There is so much beauty in all styles of music and it is a shame to me that so many artists paint themselves into such a small corner when there is so much to discover and draw from within every style. I thinks that’s part of why I gravitate so strongly towards bands like SOAD, Dir En Grey and Ulver.

thats what i do, but with less genres and more specifically to different artists. I do this with TV shows also. RIP Connor Hayden Scott In 2010 Connor showed me Question! in his mid 90's civic hatchback. As the song was playing i was challenged by the lyrics. My ego responded in a fit of jokes and belittlements. He paused the song and we talked about the concept of death. As 16 years, old 4 days apart in age, we could not have been further apart. He brought me closer to the person I am today. I already loved BYOB, Sugar, Chop Suey, and many other of SoaD songs having learned a simplified version of Toxicity on drums. After many consecutive playthroughs of the song i was crying in front of another young man. Hoping to never experience the question of loss. The song became my favorite song within weeks and has stayed in my favorite 3 songs since. In 2014 Connor chose to find out where we go. I still ponder the meaning of the song and have come to a comfortable place knowing that my brother has traversed this path. The bond formed that day helped two young white/native men lost in the trauma of forced assimilation. I will always feel an ache in my chest but because of the profound effect of the music of SoaD, as well as other musicians and artists, and the creativity of my beloved friend taken from my life by his own action, I followed the path. I have been writing peotry and lyrics as a personal release for ten yeas come november 6th and I am better for it even with a cost so high. I would trade my growth for more conversations with Connor but i am accepting of the reality I live in. I believe in equivalent exchange. The loss of his presence spurred the growth of many who knew him. His energy remains. His love proliferated. P.S. The Rocker got me and him through some tough nights. We watched it togethed a dozen times in the 2 years it was out before he passed. As anothed commenter stated, this is an unexpected crossover, for me that of two core memory groupings that I cherish dearly. Thank you for the art that i have used to heal over this last decade. I worked with two hospice houses setting up equipment for those readying to pass for two years, using the patience and understanding gained from my own processing of my grief where many wonderful souls shared their life stories with me while i set up their last bed, where I set up various pieces of equipment to help ease the discomforts of those preparing for the transition to the otherside. I had many people, in good faith, attempting to feed my ego with complements of how my presence put them at ease. Choosing to redirect that energy, I would say many variants of "My best friend is on the otherside, and he is the one you should take these praises too. Without his brief but powerful light, I would have nothing to reflect to you. I am the moon to his sun and his light is still shining through me" I have one tattoo, that of a moon gazing ponderously at a shining sun with a column in the shape of a C with life beginning to grow anew with the light the moon reflect from the passing sun. We all are the composites of the experiences that we choose to define us. Much love to all.

Then, the video ends and I get: THIS GUY VS. THAT GUY, This idea VS. That idea, First time reaction to X, You won't believe what happened to Y. And this makes me somewhat numb to what people, in general, have to say - it's always regurgitated ideas, second-hand experiences, fights for reason or dominance. Thank you Rainn and Serj, for being yourselves and making me feel like I was hearing actual people discussing actual ideas.

Sigh. Wish I could filter out the cheap, empty, stupid in a real way. It’s pretty horrifying to contemplate quality of content out there…and the science behind its presence makes me nauseated. This was a much needed find for me tonight. New sub!

There's so much in this conversation that echoes the thoughts that spin through my head. Examples: What is the point of war, genocide? Why are humans so greedy? I am not hopeful (that humans will be able to change before the point of no return is reached and we cause our own extinction). It is a great conversation that outlines a scepticism that so many of us feel when it comes to hope. Personally, I see a serious attention-deficit syndrome among humans. We see the terrible things that humans do to each other and scream....for a second, or a minute...and we lack focus of speaking very long about it. We don't want to see this bad situation for what it is because if we think about it too much, we risk our own sanity or ability to lose all hope that humans can change. But we have to speak about these things with the hope that these words are heard and that some kind of change will happen. If we keep quiet, then how will change happen? All I can do at this point is keep repeating the mantra "Peace, Love and comfort to all humans", and hope that this will calm the troubled souls of my fellow human animals. I appreciate these conversations and the fact that I can hear these words of compassion and empathy for other humans, that I, too, carry with me and send out to the universe, hoping for a change. Peace, Love and comfort to all humans. You are important to me, you have great power and light within you. Let other humans know this and that they carry these gifts too.

I'm with Serj, I think we fix it by being better to one another. Selfishness is the true villain here, if people could just be more compassionate and forgiving to one another we'd be much better off, but; in America especially, it's a culture of individualism, where the self is the most important. Not to say that it's all negative, there's pros of individualism, but when all everyone thinks about is themselves, then nothing is going to get better.

1:57 Finally. First time I've heard someone openly compare System to Nirvana. They were like the spiritual successor to that band, in many, many, many ways. Most overlooked comparison of the century IMO.

Amazing episode! System of a Down was one of the bands I became a fan of during my formative teenage years - I remember spending countless hours drumming to the entire Toxicity album. Great to see Serj in a good place and doing well.
