One of the most common arm locks on the ground, the hammerlock is versatile, pragmatic and pits the strength of both arms and your entire body against a single arm.

It's so funny how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners debate about the thumb grip, but don't teach about rotation of the wrist and forearm.

japanese mma fighter sakuraba defeated many people with this hold and was able to get it from many positions, he learned it from british professional wrestler billy robinson, there are some interesting videos about him using the hold on here

Yep sakuraba is a great catch wrestler and billy Robertson and billy Riley for that matter were treasures of information. Their dvds are in regular rotation in the dojo. Yogi Anjo and fujiwara also belong at that table.

you seem informed. From the outside looking in it seems like he Sakuraba was laying a trap, attack by draw as Bruce Lee would categorize it. What's your understanding of it? If it was a trap, the Gracies kept falling for it, so I don't know if that really makes sense. . .

@@cameronforbes2649 honestly i think sakuraba was just a much more powerful grappler and had more knowledge, the gracies only studied jiu jitsu while sakuraba had a very strong base in traditional collegiate style wrestling in addition to the many submissions of catch wrestling and when combined together it created a very powerful grappling style because he could take people down while avoid being taken down, and he could attack powerful submission techniques from almost any position while knowing how to defend submissions. also sakuraba was very smart and had very high fight iq. also this is why ken shamrock would have won ufc if royce hadnt used his gi, ken shamrocks knowledge of traditional wrestling + catch wrestling made him a stronger grappler than someone who only knew bjj or only knew wrestling

@@cameronforbes2649 absolutely. He was a catch wrestler and there was a long rivalry between Dickson and a catch wrestler in Japan that resulted in the catch wrestler being jumped on the street by a group of students. Sakuraba openly felt he could beat Dickson and was trying to bait him into a match. The family kept throwing out various members in the way and he mowed through them. Catch has a very different attack style. Bjj has since integrated many of their strategies but at the time the vulnerabilities it exposed were glaring.

Grab their hand to prevent them from pulling your hair back towards them and move your head closer to them so there is no more distance for them to pull your hair back.
