Btw Phly, you read the penetration on the sabot stat wrong, its max pen at 30 degrees from the vertical plain (the way they say it instead of 60 degrees from the horizontal plain) is 119, so you got a lucky shot on that T54 1947 (he was stopping and he was tilting forward, thats why it penned)
@Gatortribe8 жыл бұрын
Phly, where you were shooting the T-54 mod 47 in the hull it has 120mm sloped at a 60° *vertical* angle. Stat cards on shells shows the horizontal angle, so you have to look at the 30° penetration to know what it will be against the T-54 mod 47. Your stock APFSDS shell only has 119mm penetration against 30° horizontal, or 60° vertical, so you were 1mm short of being able to penetrate it.
@floydikus8 жыл бұрын
the sabot is not good against slope and in Wt they have simulated that by giving it a higher % to just bounce off even if u got overmatch with pen and gun. that's why the t-34 seem to have stalinium armor
@benlaskowski3574 жыл бұрын
The use of a smoothbore gun meant better performance from APFSDS and HEAT rounds: the spin that rifling imparts degrades those rounds' power. The stabilizer is only useful up to 20kph. The turret rotates a circle in 18 seconds. The gun's maximum effective range, direct-fire, is 3,000m. Its optimum range is 1,500 to 2,000.
@ZeitrafferYEP8 жыл бұрын
Sabot rounds are basically arrows so they have more angled cones on the front and that is why they can easily bounce on a angled front except if you aim a little lower
@TheDutchRanger8 жыл бұрын
The main reason for a smooth bore is to extend the barrel lifetime. When you are using fin stabilized shells you don't need a rifled barrel to keep the shell stable in flight that's what the fins are for.
@safn19498 жыл бұрын
HEAT is the way to go,it rarely bounces. We hardly ever used SABOT in the M60A1 and never HEP for tank to tank. Great video.
@m000Theevilcow8 жыл бұрын
Hey Phly, another great vid, but just one small remark, I believe that rifled gun is more accurate then smooth bore but that is only worth it for HE and HESH rounds like the ones the British use often, it has the drawback that it needs its gun replaced after the coating on the rifled gun has worn out. Smooth bore guns on the other hand are capable to shoot APFSDS, Armour Piercing Fin-stabilized Discarding Sabot, It's a sub-caliber round. A thin, long and heavy rod that uses fins instead of spin to stabilize in flight. Such round is more effective than the APCBC rounds used in rifled guns capable of reaching longer range at an higher muzzle velocity. That´s why the US Army is using smooth bore guns on their M1A2 and M1A3 guns as they have realized that AT performance is way more important then shooting some buildings or heavy infantry emplacements a lesson learned at both Gulf Wars. Smooth bore guns are capable of firing canister rounds (liked used in some wars) full of golf ball sized tugsten balls for use against infantry and buildings. Keep up the good job !!!! Hope that you can start recording at 1440 or 4K some time soon.... :D
@EngineeringVignettes8 жыл бұрын
Smooth bore can help with HEAT rounds as well; they don't work as well when spinning; it deforms the plasma jet. Later gen. HEAT rounds were designed for rifled barrels by counter spinning the plasma stream, but earlier gen. rounds really needed barrels without rifling for the best performance. Nice tank though, thanks for the vid. - Eddy
@metanoia63358 жыл бұрын
The t-62 was always notorious for a slow rate of fire. At most 6 rounds per minute due to the ammo ejector adding a longer reload and also lacking a fume extractor so the crew would inhale the gas of the spent cartridge. To prevent poisoning from the gas, crews often had to let it clear out to prevent build-up.

The T-62 has ATGMs aviable, the tank is still in use by so many countries that the is still ammunition in production. Including AT4 missiles. The soviets were shocked by the appereance of the L7 105mm gun. And Marshal Shukov said, he wants this gun in europe even if donkey need to tow it there, they did something with the breech so the gun would fit in there.
@jewdidnaziitthrumping44108 жыл бұрын
Phly the rifled barrel can be just as accurate as a smothbore the fins for stability on the round replace the need for rifling and also allows ATGMs and long barrel life
@pani12058 жыл бұрын
The first APDSFS round bounced because it has 119mm pen at 60 degrees and the T-54 you shot at has 120mm frontal armor, since it's the first one.
@joshuafroughton41717 жыл бұрын
smoothbore cannons when firing apfsds or heat shells achieve higher penetration than a rifled gun firing the same shell. and rifled guns are only more accurate firing solid shot. the fins on the apfsds and heat fs keep the rounds stable through the smooth bore
@biboloxo8 жыл бұрын
Do you know that 60 degrees you see in the modification infor. equal to 30 degrees when you use the "armor" feature?
@alanch908 жыл бұрын
Reload time on t-62 was very slow mainly because of the size of the ammo, bigger than modern day 120mm (almost 1 meter long). For the loader it was difficul enough to move that round on such cramped turret, in adition the spent shell casing had to be automatically ejected (first it had to depress the gun to a specific position, making the gunner loose sight of the target) which took up to 6 seconds on itself if im not mistaken. T-64 was a huge improvement on this area because it used the same projectiles in a two part form factor, better suited for small turrets.
@divinesan77865 жыл бұрын
No because it has auto loader
@juracan85918 жыл бұрын
Phly, the T54 you shot is the one with 20mm more armor on hull and the 60° value on shot is actually the value for 30° and the one for 30° is the one for 60° on the field.
@TwinklesTheChinchilla8 жыл бұрын
APFSDS not APDSFS. An easy way to remember it is that shot/shell type is detailed first, followed by primary and secondary modifiers and components. Shot type: Armor-Piercing, Fin-Stabilized (the fins are a permanent fixture in absence of rifling, due to the projectile having too great of a length: width ratio to stabilize from rifling. Therefore, the fins are part of the shot.); Modifier: Discarding Sabot, (concentrated powder burn evenly behind the shot, transfers energy to the shot, then discards in flight for maximum external ballistics).
@benlaskowski3574 жыл бұрын
Your explanation for the smoothbore/rifling difference is incredibly simple, and accurate. Thing is, APFSDS and HEAT performance degrades in a rifled barrel: when spun the HEAT jet disperses more, hurting armor penetration. I dunno about APFSDS.
@petrkdn82242 жыл бұрын
it kinda doesnt matter for APFSDS since it has the fins to stabilize the shell so it doesnt stumble in the air, achieving more penetration

Not exactly phly, the smooth bore was used because sabots would spin uncontrollably and deviate of target once sabots' diameter to length ratio went beyond a certain point. Hence they used smooth bores to allow firing of longer sabots that contained more KE and penetrated more. The more you know ===>>☆
@ruthenius6828 жыл бұрын
Is there any substantial difference in damage that is dealt by default AP shell and that is dealt by an unlocked one? Because 3BM4's rod was made of steel (it was meh) but 3BM4's rod was made of tungsten which provided way, waaaaay better and greater fragmentation effect. It could literally spray the whole crew compartment with deadly shrapnel. Did anyone of WT youtubers aside PollyDolly notice that T-62's HEAT-FS shells have not only the best pen but also the worst velocity among its peers? 950 m\s vs Leo's 1173 m\s? Worse almost by 250 m\s actually. It's also noteworthy that T-62's shell casing ejection mechanism doesn't work in the game. I don't know if Gaijin have failed to implement it but in the reality this mechanism required some time to extract used shell casing therefore prolonging the reload time. I think that Gaijin might've decided to go without it and get an excuse to decrease reload time which was 16-17 seconds even for experienced crew. Finally, T-62 received ATGM (9К116-2 Sheksna aka AT-12 Swinger) only in 1980s after upgraded version - T-62M was developed.

actually, the real reason why they went to smooth bore was because armor piercing arrows were getting too long to be stabilized by spin and needed aerodynamic stabilization, so rifling would be useless and only cost more to make, take longer, wear out faster, make the bullet go a little bit slower, etc

Don't even waste your time on the stock apfsds rounds, just spend the gold and unlock the upgraded apfsds shell. To explain it simply. What you said about the smooth bore is wrong. Rifled barrel's will always be more accurate, and the rounds will go faster. Example of a modern tank with a rifled barrel, is a British Challanger 2. It uses HESH rounds, for AT purposes, and they are not meant to penetrate, but cause spooling inside the tank, and kill the crew with the shrapnel that's made of internal tank parts, as well as disable various systems inside, mission killing the tank. Smooth bores are used because rifled barrels cannot shoot the fin stabilized APFSDS penetetrators, and also allow the use of barrel launched ATGM's. Such as the Kobra, Svir, Refleks, and Sheksna.
@divinesan77865 жыл бұрын
Abrams doesnt use ATGM, why does it switch from Rifle to Smoothbore? Because, the shell it uses right? Why do they use it if it is slower than rifle like you said? Because it doesnt like you said. If you compare Velocity of Rifle and Smoothbore, the Smoothbore will win because it flies faster, it doesnt lose power from the spinning and fraction, also, the APFSDS on smoothbore was known to be very accurate. If you look up, smoothbore vs Rifle, people will say Smoothbore is much better than rifle. The only reason why the British still uses the Rifle because the HESH, they love the HESH, but the HESH cant be Fin-stabilized so they have to use rifle to spin. Early model of smoothbore on T-62 cant shoot ATGM, later they modified them to shoot the ATGM.

@Lemard778 жыл бұрын
Yes they could, and the spent cases would just be laying on the floor like in all of the other tanks, if the number of cases were too much then it would retreat to unload them like in every other tank. Remember this tank was also meant for nuclear warfare so the automatic eject system would have to be turned off (tenk needs to be sealed). The crampness of the T-62 isn't that much more than that of the T-54 for example, yes the gun is bigger but the turret ring is much wider to compensate for it. You can find on KZbin some videos of T-62s fighting and firing several shots with the system turned off.
@Mach-2-Fishbed8 жыл бұрын
The system was able to be turned off (at the loaders controll panel as a requirment for both repairs/testing and the NBC system). But the gun would still raise to allow loading room. It was not uncommon of crews to not use the ejection system as it had a tendency to sometimes bounce the casing a bit to the side, miss the hatch, and possibly into the gunner or loader.

Real APFSDS rounds aren't prone to ricochet except at extreme angles; but yeah the stats for that round said its point-blank penetration was barely over 100mm at that angle, so it shouldn't have been a surprise.

Actually I suppose these are really old sabot rounds, if they're the old maraging steel ones they probably do suck with slopes.

So do you guys think that at one point Gaijin will add a modified version of the leo 1?
@johannesjonzon18068 жыл бұрын
I really hope they add the STRV 103. The fact that it's a tank yet has no turret is really interesting. Also I think it is the only tank ever that could be operated by just one man.

And the hydralics will be really interesting to see how its modeled.

They gonna add Gepard and Leopard 1A1 too :3 It was leaked 3 weeks ago. :d Leo 1 with actual gun stabilizer could be fun to use. :D

You probably don't own any tier 5 tanks if you believe Russian tanks are "Op". And this is coming from a guy that plays Germany and British tier 5.
