Well, tank vs tank encounters are in fact somewhat rare, just like in most wars. It's not giant tank divisions smashing into eachother, it's mostly positional combat involving mainly infantry and artillery and drones, with tanks in support. The HE and machinegun on a tank is always the most important, followed by it's ability to protect against AT weapons, followed by it's ability to penetrate enemy tanks. I've heard channels that talk to veterans from the Ukrainian side who also stated that tank vs tank encounters, so I don't think it's just Russian cope.

The fact that tanks can get outranged by infantry is...pathetic to say the least. Then again, having a shit tank is better than no tank, as its still a big ass gun to bring to the battle. T-55s and such will be used as artillery because from what i've heard Russia is running low on 155/152/122mm artillery shells but has plenty of 100mm shells, which these things can fire. Still, can you imagine the US going "ah fuck, guess we'll send in the M60's"?

@@schaddenkorp6977 The T-62's and T-55's being sent into battle don't have thermal optics for the most part. And if they do, they have un-cooled thermal optics, which have effective range of about 600 meters. In comparison, the AT crews of Ukraine are using cooled thermal optics, which have an effective range of 10 miles, give or take, and allow the AT crews using weapons like the Javelin and NLAW to strike at tanks far outside of their thermal optics range (if they have any), or basically with impunity if said tanks they're engaging don't have thermal optics. Barring getting lucky and the crews (or supporting infantry if they have any) happen to see the attack directly, it's difficult for Russia's tank forces to react and deal with Ukrainian anti tank crews because of this disparity. Thermal optics are super amazing to have in an environment where the background temperature of the landscape is much colder in general, which makes people and vehicles stick out (being hot in comparison). The landscape of Ukraine is perfect for thermal optic use, in compairson to places like Afghanistan, where the average background temperature is much higher. Does that explanation suffice?

No, they're not using T55 or T62s as MBTs. They're using them in the indirect fire role, essentially turning them into SPGs, as these old tanks still have sights for that purpose. They're also using them as IFVs and other random roles.

From what i understand the Russian forces are using the t55 as artillery, not as a frontline tank as you put it. It probably is very inaccurate but they have a lot of ammo, why not use them? They have enough of other tanks capable of going up against newer western tanks. They are churning out new T90s way faster than the west can, if im allowed to guess. A thougth aswell on the use of old rounds. From what ive heard there hasnt been a lot of tank on tank combat and the tanks have mostly been firing heat or he, and the older ammo is still pretty capable against the tanks they have faced so far. Might aswell use it.

This is a dumb thing to comment probably but I saw at 3:30 roughly you couldn't climb that hill, if you use manual gear switching and go into gear one you actually can climb a lot steeper then the game normally lets you with the automatic gear switch, the game moves up to a higher gear to soon even though you really want that high engine RPM to get as much torque as possible, think it might be because of gaijins so called spaghetti code

They had guidelines in manuals and training for the usage of those tanks as self propelled artillery pieces, but training was dropped in later years as it was apparently thought that because nukes exist, no long wars would exist. But alas, the WW2 veterans were right all along.

That's the plan, and busting buildings in urban warfare, but they're being found a bit closer to the front than ideal for that. And if thst old sabot round is real, there's some of them stocking AT rounds.

Considering we have over 50 confirmed T-62 losses, they're clearly not all being used in support roles. And only a very small minority are the T-62M obr. 2022 which at least comes with a thermal gunner sight (although FCS still looks old).

Most of the vehicles Ukraine uses is outdated armored cars, apcs and MRAPs. About 100 T-90Ms are produced monthly and that's before you'll acount for other vehicles. So it's less about fielding T-54/55/62 against other tanks and more about having one more SPG to kill stuff and spend outdated ammo. That's why you see 23mm cannons, 57mm oldies, 30mm autocannons on everything, all sorts of mortars and daily ammo spendings that cover combined weekly NATO manufacturing output.

18 seconds in and sorry Spookston but Russia isn’t fielding T-62s against Leopards or even against Ukrainians T-72 variants. They just have such a huge supply of them they’re using them for trench support/artillery in some instances. Ukraine is literally doing the same thing even using Maxim guns from museums and also using T-55s/ T-62s. Plus with APCs being super important in modern battlefield those old soviet tanks can still put pressure on low armor vehicles. I would advise not to follow west propaganda next time and try to stay neutral. As an American who’s against the war and not blindly following Ukrainian’s side.

And UA side also use literally anything that has kind of armor (any old British and French stuff and now crying and willing to get some leopards 1 more) and use anything old and rusty to resupply they really high casualties and problems with their "mechanised" brigades (some of them already turned into fully infantry brigades). But UA side coping so hard and has a support from Western media, so that cope didn't noticed by many "non-political" youtubers and bloggers. How in that meme said: "We're winnin'!"

No, since 2024 T-54/55s showed up in armored assault columns on numerous points specifically robotyne. The T-62s have shown up in attack columns all over the front but also make up a large percentage of the armor in Russian use in Kharkiv. One alternative uses found for T-62s with non functioning guns is their conversion into the infamous turtle tanks.

I feel like people only think it’s a problem bc they can pay for an 8.7 with a subpar dart but with Gen 3 thermals instead of having to grind through Japan to get it, which just added to the premium black hole at that BR. they are using them agaisnt infantry not for tank to tank combat. And if we are at using old MBTs ukraine got Slovenian M-55s (upgraded T-55) also there isn't much tank to tank combat so these old MBTs do very good in this war since it is cheaper to lose one (day 28 of asking)

0:10 ❌❌ Wrong. T-62s and T-64s are mainly used by the LPR and DPR militias. The Russian Armed Forces only use captured T-64s in their ranks, thats why lots of T-64s in Russian service are of the ‘Bulat’ modification. The T-55s are not front line infantry/tank fighting vehicles, they are used as indirect fire SPGs, they are used like this die to the apparent huge surplus of 100mm HE rounds, these ‘Tanks’ now ‘SPGs’ have a crew of 3 instead of 4, this is due to the lack of a need for a commander. Some T-55s have even had their turrets removed and used as armoured recovery vehicles or a 57mm autocannon put in place.

Wrong. Recently heavily retrofitted T-62Ms named unofficially T-62M Obr 2022s, given Thermal Sights and ERA have been sighted in Russian Service. T-54s are being used in frontline combat as makeshift "IFVs" to ferry and support infantry. It doesn't matter how exactly you spin this, both tanks are being used in combat, when there should be more efficient and effective alternatives that Russian troops COULD be using. The fact that there aren't REAL IFVs, and ACTUAL purpose built Self Propelled Artillery to use in place of nearly 70 year old MBTs is ridiculous.

For all those who believe these are meant to face other MBTS, that is quite incorrect. Russia has been using them as more or less defense / assault tanks against infantry. Although they have been upgraded with a gen 2 thermal viewer, that is a last resort for them to engage in MBT on MBT combat. As for the T55s, artillery crews have been retrained to use these arty guns with armor, as it’s the last Russian tank that actually had that in the manual of operations, however they’re trained to do it in most mbts.
