=============================
Description taken from Wikipedia "The first-generation Ford Mustang was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company from April 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobiles known as the pony car. The Mustang’s styling, with its long hood and short deck, proved wildly popular and inspired a host of imitators. It was initially introduced as a hardtop and convertible with the fastback version put on sale the following year. At the time of its introduction, the Mustang, sharing its underpinnings with the Falcon, was slotted into a compact car segment."

I've owned many of these types of cars as they were all coming up for sale used in 1980 when I started driving and they really were nice solid dependable cars. One in particular was a 1974 LTD with a 351 Windsor in it and we bolted on a 4bbl carb and manifold, my goodness but that car could lay some serious rubber, lol, the joy of youth.

The 1970s are generally regarded as a low point in automotive history, often called the malaise era. I share your nostalgia for these cars, but from a design and engineering point of view these cars were heavy, underpowered, not reliable, and overly reliant on baroque styling gimmicks.
@analogidc1394
@analogidc1394 3 жыл бұрын
@@mrgreen7152 Yes they were big and heavy. However I don't think they were less reliable than cars from the previous decade. Anti pollution was a headache in the day stealing horsepower and I seem to remember Chrysler having issues with one of their carburetors. It seems gimmicks have moved from styling to anything with a touch screen.

Real cars? I lived in the 70s, and I do remember how awful those cars were: underpowered, poorly built, with suspension and steering designed for parking maneuvers only. Between 1971 and 1984 my family had a Ford Fairlane 500, two Dodge Darts, a Ford Granada and a Chevrolet Malibu, and yet the best one was the Opel Manta: small, dependable, solidly built, with excellent lights and great visibility. The only reason we sold it was because the trunk was too small to carry all of our stuff during our weekly trips to the beach house.
@geraldscott4302
@geraldscott4302 3 жыл бұрын
@@mrgreen7152 My love for these cars is based on their styling, rear wheel drive, and simple non computerized technology. The "malaise" thing generally refers to the fact that they were down on power from earlier models due to excessive emissions crap. That part is true. But no longer an issue. I am a Corvette enthusiast, and my favorite Corvettes are the 1974-1977 models, again based on styling. I have a 1976 model, which came from the factory with under 200hp. Not having to deal with the emissions thing anymore for a car of that age, I built a 420hp engine for it. It now has a true dual exhaust with no catalytic converter, but it is still quiet, with stock mufflers. It has more power than any other stock Corvette ever had. This can be done to ANY 1970s car, especially ones with V8 engines.

@@curbowman I have owned a lot of 1970s cars, and still own two. My very first car, when I got my drivers license at age 16 in 1975, was a 1970 base model Dodge Challenger. I have also owned a 1972 Camaro, a 1974 Nova, a 1974 Grand Prix, a 1973 Chevelle Malibu station wagon, a 1975 Impala, a 1975 Granada, a 1977 Mustang II, a 1978 Ford Thunderbird, and currently own a 1976 Corvette, and believe it or not, a 1972 Pinto woodgrain wagon. Yes I said PINTO. It has a new paint job, new woodgrain, and has had the engine replaced once. The body is solid as a rock, no rust (original AZ car) and the interior is near perfect except for a couple of cracks in the dash (AZ sun) This car is FORTY NINE years old and still runs like new. I have been driving it for EIGHTEEN years. It even has points ignition (if you even know what that is) it has been one of the most trouble free cars I have ever owned. It is my daily driver.
