Tara Lipinski looks SO comfortable on the ice ! She was definitely the USA's answer to Oksana Baiul -- so petite and incredibly graceful. She skated like a true champion.

This girl went out and skated with joy in her heart. It shone through. As a neutral fan (not a die-hard fan of either Kwan or Tara) it was clear to me who the winner was: harder program, excellent presentation, perfectly clean skate....It was Tara's gold fair and square.

I was a Michelle fan and was pretty upset but I’m older now and looking at it now the little pretty Tara definitely won this fair and square. People kept asking Michelle how she felt about losing the gold and she answered by telling them I didn’t lose the gold because it didn’t belong to me and I won the silver. They are beautiful young ladies now and both are on Instagram and both thumbs up each other’s things that’s been postedI and I even heard Tara referring to Michelle as the legendary Michelle Kwan. I’m happy to see that both are doing great 👍

You know.. I always thought Michelle Kwan deserved the gold.. But watching this back many years later, I can see why Tara won. Obviously the difficulty in her jumps but I also think she skated with more freedom this night compared to Michelle. Michelle's performance was just a little tentative.

Tara skated safe because she never tried to be a artist on ice. Artistry is the most difficult technique, Tara never touched Michelle's level.

Tara did actually "touch" Kwan's level !. Tara won by the combined marks of 6 judges who placed her 1st to 3 judges who placed Kwan first. That is how the results played out.

@@rickram1961 Can't argue with the fact that Tara's program may have included more technical content. But, the quality of Kwan's spins, footwork, jumps, and overall superior delivery of her program far outweighed Tara's execution of those technical jumps, etc...Tara may have completed the technical components of her program, but her performance was lacking in overall artistry and maturity. I find it very sad that this sport has become only about racking up points, not about the beauty of not only completing those technical elements, but delivering a beautiful, artistic performance.

You're right, just staying upright isn't enough to win any skating competition. But, skating a superior, more artistic and mature program IS enough to win. You're also correct in that Sarah Hughes skated a more complete, error free program than Kwan in 2002, that was never in question. Tara skated like a child among women in the 1998 Olympic Long Program. Not near the artistry, no where near the height and beauty in her jumps. Her arm and leg extensions were pedestrian at best. Had she skated earlier in the rotation, she would not have won. She would have likely made the podium, but never the Gold, perhaps not even Silver. To say that Tara out skated Kwan in Nagano is absolutely ridiculous. In today's code of points, Tara would be heavily penalized for her edges and completion (or lack thereof) of jump rotations. Kwan was always the more complete, mature, artistic and technically superior skater over Tara Lipinski. Her body of work and her resume speak for itself.@Mountain Lover
