I really appreciate how Wil takes the time to explain and offer strategy tips to the other players. As much as he is self-deprecating about his loss record, it is fabulous seeing how he is really in it for the experience of everyone and supports the whole idea behind the show, which is showing people how to play the myriad games he spotlights.
@TheReykjavik

I like how when one of the other players says, when deciding where to play, "whichever one you like better" (about 15 minutes in), Wil leaves it where they put it initially. This is some great sportsmanship. As much as he wants to not lose, Wil is still helping the players with presumably less experience understand the game, without playing it for them.

Omg! I can't believe I missed that! Actually, Wil came across as kind of a rookie. That cheaty farmer placement. He miscalculated simple 4 point cities twice. Also he complained about his tile placement at 1:16:40, while the tile placement scored him 7 points (3 for the farmer, 4 for the city). Putting it on the cloister, like he wanted to, would've scored him 2 points (1 extra for the cloister, and assuming he put a meeple in the unfinished city, 1 point for that). Still, he complained about the decision. His reasoning revealed that he didn't know that you are allowed score unfinished cloisters at the end of the game. Finally, when counting the scores at the end, anyone with experience would remove scored meeples from the board to prevent confusion and reduce risk of mistakes (lke counting a meeple twice, or missing a meeple).

Wil made such a big deal over not completing the monastery when it was really only a one point difference. He still gets 8 points for the 8 tiles surrounding it at the end of the game. He actually gained three extra points by completing a 2-tile city for four points instead of losing five points like he kept harping on about. Edit: Someone else a few comments below pointed that out already :P.

So, I see people complaining about how there is an influx of "old" games on tabletop. This is because the season has ended and the people as G&S are kindly providing us with extended versions of previous episodes (and giving credit where credit is due, many people who are QQing are aware that theses are extended versions and not reposts). Now, for those who are saying "I WANT NEW GAME, WHY OLD GAME?" Firstly, the season is ended, and thus they need to record the next season before they can give us content from the next season, amazing right? Finally, after all the content and joy G&S provides us without a single dollar (or regional equivalent) out of our pockets, why right do any of us have to demand anything from them? Feel free to discuss this issue below, but I have better things to do than reply to trolls and the like, so don't be disappointed it I only respond the the intelligent or clarifying comment.

Ok, so I've just had an idea for a game. It's called Ragnarok, and it's a game set in the Nordic Apocalypse. The board is divided into the nine realms of the Nordic universe, as well as the World Tree, Yggdrasil, which connects them. Each realm is divided into five spaces, and has an assigned race, apart from Midgard, which has ten spaces, and no race. In a two player game, each player will play either Jotunheim, the realm of the Giants at the very bottom of Yggdrasil, or Asgard, realm of the Aesir Gods, at the very top. The goal of the game to to destroy the opposing side. Each race has a selection of units, and at the start of the game, all available units are placed on the five spaces of that race's realm. Each unit has unique stats, shown by a unit card. Some units only have one piece (eg. Thor), while others have several pieces (eg. Valhallan Warriors). This is because there is only one god of thunder, but there are many units of Valhallan Warriors. Each unit can move one space per turn. If they move onto a Yggdrasil space, then nothing happens. If they move onto a space in one of the nine Realms, however, then a marker is placed down. If they move onto a space occupied by an enemy unit, a battle will occur (I haven't worked out the combat system yet). If a realm space was claimed by the enemy, but was unoccupied, then you simply replace that marker. For every full realm you control, you gain one manna per turn. Manna is used to regenerate fallen units. How much manna is required varies from unit to unit. Each realm has a citadel (apart from Midgard). Now, for allied realms, all you need to do is sacrifice 1 manna, and you claim the citadel. For enemy factions, however, you must fight the garrison. Claiming the entirety of a realm doesn't just give you 1 manna, it also gives you access to three of one type of unit from that faction (for example, if you capture Alfheim, you gain access to three Elven Archers). If you had any of these units in your army, but then that realm was taken, these units would disappear, and next turn, they would reappear at their home realm, but this time the enemy would have control of them. The alliances are as follows: Asgard: Vanaheim, Alfheim, Svartalfheim. Jotunheim: Hel, Niflheim, Muspelheim Now, units from Jotunheim and Asgard can be regenerated at any captured citadel (once the entire realm has been captured), but units from other realms must pay an additional manna to regenerate anywhere but their natural citadel. In Midgard,for every two spaces you capture, you gain one manna per turn. Now, in a game with four players and up, the game gets interesting. Why? Because now it's not two realms against each other, it's two alliances against each other. Each alliance has a leader (Asgard and Jotunheim) and a secondary leader (Vanaheim and Muspelheim). In a four player game, it is these four factions that are played. Now, the markers mentioned before don't represent the territory of one realm, but of one alliance. Each member of the alliance generates it's own manna,following the same rules as before. For example, if the Asgardian alliance (consisting of Vanaheim and Asgard) controlled Asgard, Vanaheim, Alfheim and four spaces of Midgard, both Vanahiem and Asgard would gain five manna per turn. However, as discussed before, only the two leaders can regenerate units at any captured citadel for free. However, in games of four plus players, members of one alliance can donate manna to each other. Also note that any units from captured realm are controlled by the alliance leader. So, what does the secondary leader do? If the leader's realm is captured, they become the leader until that realm is recaptured. Note: If your citadel is captured, you can't regenerate any units, but the enemy can't use those three units until the following requirements are met: 1) All of your realm is taken. 2) You have no hero units left (units who only have one piece eg. Thor). 3) You have three or less units left. If these requirements are met, then you are out of the game. Even then, if the rest of the alliance manages to take back the entirety of your realm, you get back in the game. In a six player game, the two leaders and secondary leaders are played, along with one of the two other realms from each alliance. Eight players and all factions are in play. For odd numbers of players, I'm not sure yet. I was thinking about having the Midgard Serpent being a feature in the game that causes chaos (like the Robber in Settlers of Catan, but more complex). With an even number of players, its decisions are controlled by the dice (with modifiers from the players). In an odd number, it is played by one player, and the things that were modifiers actually make it easier for the Serpent to win, so the players have to make deals with the Serpent to prevent from attacking, but they can;t be too generous, otherwise the Serpent will win. However, right now, I can't think of anything.

@iceklaw
@iceklaw 10 жыл бұрын
You for real I would be down to play something like that. OK thoughts. Midgard Serpent maybe have him travel all the realms as an indiscriminate troop killer. To travel the nine realms you must build a bi-frost to the realm you wish to attack, this might give you time to build your army and set your defences. With that said your opponent can smash your bi-frost to stop anymore of your soilders coming through. Give each race a unique skill. Either for combat, army and bi-frost construction or realm defences.

I've to say this was really a great episode. It also was quite thrilling to sum up all the points in the end.I've played it myself a few times, and I've to say, though I've not won a single game of em ^^, that it's a really awesome game, that I can recommend to everyone. I've also noticed a move by Wil at 35:04, that, as Dennis Xiloj had pointed out some comments below, might not have been legit, when he placed a farmer on a field between the towns, on a tile, that he had not put down within the same turn. The outcome would potentially have made him share the 15 farming points with Nika, which would have resulted in Nika still being 2 points behind Wil in the final score. So, well, never mind. Though it would have made the final score even closer and added up more awesomeness to it. :D

jimmy morgan doesn't matter...the tile he placed the meeple on was already played, so he can't put the meeple there. He could have put it on the new tile, and he would have only gotten the one city, not both. You can only place meeples on the current tile, not one already played. It isn't a matter of having meeples to play.

Mateus Carvalho Yes, he cheated, but I don't think intentionally. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this, and I'm the one who's WAAAAAAAAY late to the party. Had he put it on the new tile, which I'm sure was his intent, he would have split both fields with Nika. He would have gotten an extra 3 points out of the deal and finished with 68. Mika would have gotten and extra 15 points and ended with 63, so Mr. Wheaton would have still won. 2nd and 3rd place would have swapped.

Can't figure out of Wil is being super passive-aggressive all the time or not. He's a fun guy, to be sure, but I'd be uncomfortable playing with him. Also love the incredulous faces Kumail makes.

Can I juuust point out that Wil's play at 34:56 is incorrect (you can only place meeples on the tile you placed in your turn), meaning the 15 points at the end are void, or at least Nika's shared property? Wil would have won anyways, by two points, but still. :/

I was at first very bothered, but having done more research, I learned they have changed the rules for Carcassonne at least once. In my version a 2 tile city only scores 2 points because it's a cheap way to get points I guess, so I was angry that weren't scoring it right, but I looked it up, and in later editions of the game that rule was changed so that all cities, even the 2 tile ones score 2 points per tile. So the 2 tile city does now score 4 points.

A'ight, a'ight... I don't care if this is many months old, I'll just go ahead and point out errors like this has just been taped. (yeah, i'm gonna be 'that' guy.) In 58:48 Wil says that that city/castle cannot be completed because they needed a city tile with no walls. BUT they could get a 3 sided city tile and then extend the other tile with a straight (or whatever that tile's called... if it's called something besides 'tile').

Great show, guys. Really fun to watch these extended cuts. I think Wil wasn't correct in beating himself up about that placement toward the end. He still scored 8 for the monastery, right?

Yea, he actually scored more points with the move he made. 12>8.
@KevinGillette

Indeed. If he had completed the monastery as he had regretted not doing, Wil would've ended up with fewer points. Taking the missing 8 points into account, Wil should've ended up with 73.

havent made it that far but when they placed the first one they said it does earn points until it is surrounded fully .. so if it doesnt have the full ring around it it's 0 ... if it does have the ring it's 9

In the scoring phase, wouldnt it make sense to pull meeples off the board as theyre scored? That would make scoring more reliable, right? (Preventing forgetting a meeple, or preventing double-scoring)

Pretty sure I made this comment on the original video, but Wil: You actually didn't mess up at the 1:17:34. Placing the tile on the cloister would have finished it, but due to end game scoring, that would only have given you 1 more point in the end (monk would give you 8 end game points for the uncompleted cloister compared to the 9 points in game) compared to the 4 points you did get. You could argue that the extra Meeple (however you spell that) would be worth it, but it was so close to the end that probably wouldn't have mattered. YAY, MATH!
