Man things are heating up! I tried putting together a setup after 2018 and got too frustrated but being able to find gear. Tried the Penn Warfare reel but it felt too bulky. Glad to see more options out there now

In used to kinda do this back in the early 90's, when I vertically jigged a small high density jig , with a 12lb. fresh water bass rod. it was quite effective while everyone else was dropper looping live bait.
@tunanorth2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the "Hit Killer" and "Parachute" jigs [among others] were hot back in those years, and they will still catch fish today. The fish are a lot bigger in recent years, so you may want to step up a bit from the 12-pound bass gear!

Can I use Fathom Levelwind Reels for Slow Pitch Jigging ? Thanks...
@tunanorth9 ай бұрын
Levelwind reels are usually adequate for light and medium duty SPJ applications, such as rockfish, lingcod, bass, sheephead, etc. When targeting tuna and other large pelagics, a 2-speed lever drag reel, preferably narrow design, is a much better option.

Tell me what kind of Leader should I use for Vertical Jigging and Slow Pitch Jigging please ? Thanks...
@johntuttle9544 Жыл бұрын
Heavy, but short. If the fish you are after can rock you start at 80#-100# and only 6-10'. Fishing for big BFT we use 200# leaders for their sharp teeth.

@@johntuttle9544 How to identify a Slow Pitch Jig from a High Speed Jig ?
@johntuttle9544 Жыл бұрын
@@manuelpinzon9854 The difference is that a Slow Pitch jig typically has much more weight on one side of the jig so that it flutters and darts on the drop more. Vertical Jigs will get hit on the drop but their action is best on the retrieve rather than the drop.

A lot depends on the weight of the jigs you normally use, but check out the Penn Carnage III "Slow Pitch Jigging" series rods.

What brand are those Jigging Rods and Reels ?

@@tunanorth What Casting Reel do you recommend for Slow Pitch Jigging ? Thanks...
@tunanorth2 жыл бұрын
@@manuelpinzon9854 Its important that the rod, reel, and line match up with both the weight of the jigs, and the type of fish being pursued. Narrow reels are usually favored. Braid test to reel: 20 lb.=Fathom 8XN; 30 lb.=Fathom 10XN, 40/50 lb.=Fathom 15XN.

@@tunanorth Do you think a Penn Battle 5000 ( 18.8 oz ) would be a good Reel for Spinning Jigging ? Thanks...
@tunanorth2 жыл бұрын
@@manuelpinzon9854 A Battle 5000 would be a very nice reel for local species like barracuda, bass, bonito, and even small yellowtail. However, it would not be suitable for most tuna fishing.

I used the Berkley "X-9" braid, one of the "super thin" brands. There is a compromise with the super-thin braids, you do give up some abrasion resistance.
@Joel-lopez2 жыл бұрын
@@tunanorth ohh I see and you were able to fit 300 yards? Makes sense you give up some strength
@tunanorth2 жыл бұрын
@@Joel-lopez You are not giving up breaking strength with the super-thin brands, but you do give up abrasion resistance, so if a fish takes you into the rocks, etc, it will cut you off faster. When fishing slow-pitch jigs, I normally have a 20-25 foot wind-on leader of 40-50 pound mono, specifically to give some additional abrasion resistance.
@Joel-lopez2 жыл бұрын
Tunanorth I see what your saying so just the abrasion but not the strength… Daang which if your fishing in some structure could be costly. Thank you for the info👍🏼

On Penn website, the slow pitch rods are rated by line not grams of weight. Can you tell me which rod I need for the fathom 15xn. Or at least get Penn to add the right description on the slow pitch rod other than line size and heavy. Light. Medium etc

From Steve C: "The PENN 15XNLD2 matches well with the MH model [50 pound line and 450gr. lures max] or the "M" model [40 pound lines and 350gr. lures max]"

Hello - what lbs test and how many yards on the 15XN? Thanks.
@tunanorth3 жыл бұрын
I personally use the 15XN for the heavier applications like yellowtail, with 50-pound test Berkely Pro-Spec solid braid, and it holds about 400 yards of that. Some anglers also use the 15XN model when they need more yardage of lighter lines than the smaller reels allow, and it holds over 500/30 or even 600/20 when extra yardage is needed.

I recently bought the Penn 25NLD but the reel foot is so long that it doesn't fit the fuji reel seat on my rod. Granted it is not a Penn rod. But the Penn foot is longer than most of my other reels...
@tunanorth2 жыл бұрын
Interesting; I have a number of 25NLD2 reels [not 25NLD], and they fit not only PENN rods, but every rod I have tried them on. Not sure if the less-common 25NLD has a different foot. It is also possible that some JDM rods [made for Japanese Domestic Market] may use a different sizing system.
@gutshotaz28052 жыл бұрын
@@tunanorth Most likely the latter. I later acquired an 25NLD2, the foot is the same size as the 25NLD, but not fitting the (slow pitch jigging) rod. I bought a different reel for that rod. Now it fits ok.

Not true. We bass fishermen been doing it for the last 30 years. I have used it in saltwater for 13 years with success I might add. Now today there are many variations of the “Spoons” as we called them today that are more effective than of bygone years. Take a look at the Craw Stingsilver. It’s been around for 40 years or more still catches fish !
