Anyone else would just say time to replace the 4 zone relay board and get the $$, but this guy decided to keep playing around before leaving and find the true issue which might be a temporary fix but saved the owner $$$. Good man Steve. Next Level, Class A.

I was expecting Steve to spray some contact cleaner onto those relay connections. I hear that Deoxit is the best for cleaning electrical/electronic connections.

That was an interesting problem, corroded contacts in residential HVAC are not nearly as common as in automotive applications, but it can happen.

excellent video as always Steve. Have you ever considered a service backpack like the new Milwaukee ones ? I used to lug a tools box around, now Ive got 3 of these packs. 1 is my primary, 1 contains all my combustion analyzers. the 3rd one is my 12 amp Drain auger.... if Milwaukee made bread i would have Milwaukee toast for breakfast every day. :) these packs seriously do save my back from a lot of stress of hauling a tool box around. Keep being awesome :)

Relays can be sneaky like that. Pitted contacts or oxidation on contacts or the pins that plug it into the socket. A few of those individual relays might be a good stock item to add to the truck.

Remember there are 2 types of relays in there. The one for TT is an AC relay. The other ones zones are DC.

Wouldn't now have been the best time to do a cleaning, when the HVAC guy is already there? By the by, Steve, I cleaned all around my furnace, vacuumed the inside, and wiped it down. I'm tired of seeing crusty HVAC.

I was sort of shocked when he pulled out that weird power vent motor out of the back of the truck the other day and it was an exact fit. He also had a squirrel cage fan for that motor but he didn't replace that part. That motor must have been back there for a couple years because the box looked like hell.

exact same problem i had with my Taco SR504 relay board. Same 120v relay too...jiggling it turned the furnace on, wasnt seated tight. Must be an issue with these boards.

Yeah Lotta guys are gonna think he should just pull that relay out and solder another one on, but the real issue is the duty cycle on those relays...they only work for hundred thousand or so on/off switching. The silver coating on the contact will start to wear off over time and they will arc weld together; a light tap may free it up for a while but it’s doomed to repeat. Even if you replace the bad one, any of the other three could go bad at any time. “Like for like” Steve, your best bet as always is, just recommend replacing the whole board, which I’m sure you did. :) Happy trails fellow turd herder! :Edited for grammar:

A 4 zone boiler control is only about 200 bucks....not worth pulling out a soldering iron and then warranty your work. Thats a real old one anyway....the newer ones have smaller relays or mosfets...I think thats what there called??

@@Bryan-Hensley proper practice should be diagnose. Then tell them how much it will cost and then they can decide if they want it fixed. Of course you will be getting paid for your time to diagnose but replacing something before you get the ok isn't the way to do it
