Biggest thing they have to fix ASAP is using a stronger steel top hat instead of that chessy cast aluminum one that blows up with the shock busting into the wheel wheel. Such a horrible design. Better yet use a frame mounted one like they have been doing for DECADES. Also need to use a proper transmission inter cooler to avoid the diff overheating. Not all impressed with that 8 speed either. Many getting that "hard shifting" or total transmission failure that can only be fixed with a new transmission. Even if this truck was priced competitively I would not buy it. Very suspect reliability. Then they hike the prices far above the competition and it makes my decision really easy. Raptor if you can find one at MSRP. Otherwise ZR2 all day long. I also prefer the multimatic suspension. Best riding off roader on tar sealed roads.

For every tundra with bad main bearings, there's probably 10,000 rav4s and Corollas running like wood burning stoves. They are definitely having some issues, but I still be more confident buying a Toyota than any domestic brand. Look at stilantes, I'll be surprised if they're still around in 5 years. At least still structured how they are now.
@HiPlains13 ай бұрын
@@DampNoodles They are underbuilt and we already know why. They moved from a frame mounted bump stop to a cheaper internal one mounted on shock. But it gets worse. They use a two piece cast aluminum top hat that have been exploding with the shock busting right up into the wheel well. I guarantee they will rework that in 2025. Other huge problem is no proper external transmission cooler. You work this hard off road the rear diff will overheat. Also many more reports of hard shifting and complete transmission failures. Engineer already saying they will have to limit the torque to wheels on auto traction control to avoid what happened to TFL front differential breaking. These trucks are under built compared to the prior gens. This we already know from the failures and the changes they made in the underpinnings. Toyota probably figures most will crawl malls. If you want to off road put an external trans cooler and steel top hats at the bare minimum. I would also avoid 33's or 35's on the taco. The suspension is just not going to handle that.

I don't *want* things like powered tailgates--just more expensive parts to fail. Kind of the same thing with stuff like the bed side lights. Why? The Toyota's frame-mounted rock rails are fundamentally better, the compressor is a really nice feature, and the high output electrical could be useful (IF it doesn't add too much weight). I like the tailpipe location better too. But overall, I'll take the Raptor's capability and comfort every day of the week...and that's not even considering the sizeable price difference. It's strange to call any $58k vehicle a bargain, but compared to all the competition...it definitely is.

100% Agree with your final assessment. The Raptor (minus the stupid camper and side steps)wins in my book. BTW, @22:00 minutes in, I was in a similar roll situation where I was so far over on the drivers side, I could literally and did, put my hand out the window and touch the ground.(1986.5 Nissan Hardbody SEV6 4x4) And that while fun, was very concerning. Unfortunately, that was back in the day when we did not have phone cameras and my back up rig was at the bottom of the V notch a good 4 hundred yards away. I don't know what kept it from rolling completely over, other than I had just the right amount of everything working in my favor. lol

When you disconnected the swaybar in the Tacoma, I couldn’t detect the slightest bit difference in the video. Are you sure it disconnected?

They aren't talking about the $10-15k Toyota Dealership markup on these Tacomas and the Trasmissions going bad already. I am a Tacoma Fan boy, but I have to say, for the money, with the Raptor HP/Torque factory tune, it has it beat.

This may sound nit picky but I would not buy a vehicle that had a range that the Tacoma has, what you said 285 miles? That is crazy, my truck with a 36 gallon tank will go over 700 miles with regular driving, 800+ if I put an effort into it. Heck when my remaining range drops below 200 miles I typically fuel up, having put 500 miles on the tank already.
@anthonyc18833 ай бұрын
Could he have said 250 miles? Even worse! Or perhaps I mis-heard.
@Enchanted3DPrints3 ай бұрын
You could carry extra gas. Most serious off roaders/overlanders do but i do agree another 10 gallons added to the size would be nice. 300 miles of range is more than enough for most to do what they need to do before finding another gas station though

Normally I see a 20+ minutes video (let alone 36!) and pass… but Tommy and Case, you guys made one of the best TFL vids to date! Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing! For a future video idea it might be fun to have a “normal” truck along. This was like watching two olympians do battle, be interesting to see how a normal vehicle would compare.

People keep talking about the price BUT Toyotas have always been high. All they did was give you the option to add everything you would do anyways. And it’s done from the factory so props to them for that.
@azoutdoorsunlimited3 ай бұрын
Why a front locker isn't offered as a factory option for the Taco at this point is beyond me. Espeically in the TH model which is said to be showcasing Toyo's off-road capability. Both Ford and GMC/Chevy got it right there.

Are you guys going to get that new Ford performance tune Ford released yesterday. It’s a Ford dealer installed performance tune that bumps the Ranger Raptor up 50Hp and 100 lbs of torque. Ranger Raptor: Torque jumps from 430 to 536 lb.-ft., while horsepower increases from 405 to 455. I think Ford is charging something like $800 for it. Would love to see a lot of the Ranger Raptor test or re-test with that performance tune. It’s already the power king in the class. This tune should really take it to yet another level.
