For the halo vehicle in a midsize lineup, that's just the world we live in these days. Can save quite a bit, like $20k, going to a "regular" TRD-OR (which is still way more than most people could realistically need).

Lolol The Toyota was the clear winner. The raptor took forever to get out of the second obstacle with the wheel spin, then you had to turn BOTH lockers and gun it up the hill. I'm a Toyota fan and have owned several over the years and currently have two in the stable, but I am not real pleased with the direction they have went with their powertrains in the new gens. I prefer not to have turbos, but I really have a distaste for small displacement turbos combined with a hybrid. If I did buy a Tacoma, I would not by the TRD Pro trim, but still between these two, I'd have to go with the Ranger. I think there is more utility/useability with the Ford with an equal amount of niche fun factor for which it was designed.

As a former Toyota fanboy I’d have said Tacoma. End of story. But after reading countless comments, blogs, reviews and articles on the never ending Toyota reliability issues as of late, I’d wait about 5 years before I’d purchase any new Toyota. Because make no mistake, Toyota will address the issues, but it will take some time. However, I would not buy the Ford either. Ford takes the approach of let’s pay warranty claims rather than address issues. See their dual clutch powershift transmission, and all wheel drive PTU failures as proof of my claim. In this case, it appears the Nissan Frontier is the most reliable midsize truck available at this time.

Will I have to buy a truck in the next 20 years? Maybe, probably not. If I do wanna buy a new vehicle, can I sell it for damn near what I bought it at? Yes. and quite frankly, the Ranger Raptor looks too plain Jane for me. I think you’re missing out on the reality of the new Taco. You won’t have it for 20 years, unless you want to replace the hybrid engine at great cost. Hybrids don’t last. Also, Tacos have transmissions breaking left and right on them. The Ranger is genuinely more reliable at this point and would likely last you longer. This ain’t the same as the old Taco anymore….

Resale value on anything labeled Raptor keep their value just as good if not better than a Tacoma these days. I paid $35k for my 2013 Raptor in 2019 and I can sell it right now for close to $40k. The same will be with the RR as well. Plus no stupid hybrid system that will give you problems in a few years. So, you might as well get the RR.

Insane price? ARB steel bumper $2500, rock sliders $1500, onboard 2400W power system for accessories saves you another $1500. You have just sliced $5k+ from the sticker price. You also get 22/24mpg where Ranger gets 16/18mpg. This gives you another $2800 savings on gas over 50k miles... so which one is more expensive now? If you don't need those extras then why would you buy Raptor in first place? It seems most people crying about the price tag have never gone offroad and have no clue what gear is necessary for such adventures. People that build overlanding rigs can see where the value is.

Mid-size is the new full-sized. These are still wildly overpriced but the average tradesman is going to have to make do with Rangers, Tacos and Colorados of the world because the full-size market is ridiculously overpriced. More specific to the video, great comparison Ryan. You've been nailing these face-offs lately and I'd love to see more comparisons across all of the trucks and SUVs that you review. Toyota have absolutely nailed the looks on the TRD Pro but they need to at least offer something Raptor-like when it comes to engine varieties. You can hybridize or turbocharge or both, but a 4-cylinder is never going to excite.

One more important thing to mention, the Raptor has longer suspension arms than a standard Ranger. Toyota doesn't do that; the Pro has the same suspension geometry as the regular Tacoma. Big missed opportunity by Toyota. If I was going shopping now, I'd be leaning towards the Raptor, especially considering the price.

Raptor, price matters. It sounds great, excellent power delivery, inside suspension adjustment, better backseat. I have seen mixed reviews on the Toyota seats, more saying not really noticeable. My fear, how long before Ford says we can match the Toyotas price?

A-trac is actually superior to a front locker due to the fact it’s able to send up to 50% power to one wheel. A front locker can only send 25% to a wheel. The vast majority of in users do not understand how the system works. It’s able to calculate and think extremely fast on its feet. All the end-user has to do is keep the throttle input the same and not letting off ! As soon as you let off you disengage the system. A-trac in the vast majority of times will always outperform a front locker every single time.

The biggest issue with 0 to 60 runs is whether or not the transmissions are geared properly for that, so yes it might be slower but if it was tuned properly, than a lot of these vehicles would definitely be doing differently. But I love how you just test everything and it seriously makes me judge and decide the best options I want for my car, and also what vehicles are better overall.

Most reviews prefer the Baja capabilities of the Raptor over the TRD Pro. The Raptor is also far cheaper. But the TRD Pro does come with more equipment and is a hybrid. The TRD Pro is also a freaking beefcake. That truck looks SO good. If it were my money I’d take the TRD Pro, to hell with my rear passengers legroom. But I wouldn’t turn down a Raptor either (or a Bison for that matter). WOOOO we have so many great midsized trucks right now!!

I love the looks of the TRD Pro so much more than the vanilla looking Raptor. I think Ford was way too conservative with its design. That said, I think Ford knocked it out of the park with this truck. It has way more to offer and for about $12,000 less than the Pro, it’s a no brainer. Ford for the win!

With too similar products (albeit suv vs truck here), features is likely the metric to separate and up-sell vehicles You can get the upcoming 4Runner with a rear locker, swaybar disconnect, neat suspension and all on the TRD trims but no full time 4wd, you can get full time 4wd in the limited / platinum trim but no rear locker, swaybar disconnect etc if one wants a 4Runner WITH full time 4wd, swaybar disconnect and all that stuff....you step up to the Land Cruiser, if one wants a Land Cruiser but with a turbo v6 or eKDSS or whatever...you step up to the GX

Its not that it "cuts" power, it just cant keep supplying electric power for long durations. The battery is too small and is only designed to supply short bursts of power. The biggest flaw with this design is the electric powertain. Baja drving, for which it is designed, requires a drivetrain that provides consistent power delivery. Electric assist can only provide short bursts of power. The majority of the time, the base 4 engine alone is the power you will be getting a majority of the time. That is why the ford engine is far superior for baja.

Bro Toyotas look so good but come off inept too. Like the Sequoia, Land Cruiser, 4 Runner, Tundra, ane this have some very glaring downsides and its getting a little exhausting feeling like there is going to be a really stupid downside to a new toyota release. Im scared to see what theyll mess up with the new Rav4...the Crown is worse than the Avalon and the only things with significant improvements as of recently are the Camry Prius, Sienna, Corolla GR, and Supra. Everything else is just coming off mad stupid. Why is this Tacona so expensive and why not a crewmax style body if youre gonna make some stupid seats that arent optional

Great comparison review! As a Rivian R1T owner, I absolutely love having a real back seat and great storage underneath. I can actually take my family out, or a few friends, and it won't feel like torture for anyone but myself and one lucky passenger. In this day in age, when so many trucks in the mid-size segment come with four doors, you can bank on me expecting those two additional doors to be usable! In that one regard alone, I would take the Raptor over the Taco, and it being the cheaper option is icing on the cake...if that universe lacked the existence of an R1T, of course.

Great comparison, as a Toyota fan the raptor wins. Ever since the trd pro lineup was introduced years ago, it never was a proper “desert runner”. Because it was just shocks that they upgraded, the ranger raptor has longer control arms which increases wheel travel thats why it performs better. the Tacoma doesn’t have that, it’s only wider because of wheel offset and fenders, trd pros are just shocks and badges.
