It is such an odd feeling to be excited/honored to take your truck to a mechanic. Petr is that mechanic. If we lived in a big city, he would be booked a year out. I am so happy his shop is 7 miles from my house. Thanks again, Petr!

I havent found a trustworthy mechanic like Peter That's why I do my own work Now I have trust issues and have had bad experiences. I wouldn’t let those places shine my shoes. Good fix. Don’t they have a heli coil that size Peter. You can see the excitement in Peters Voice you can tell he likes to work on Toyota’s 👍 I see 4 thumbs down that’s the oil change guys LOL
@tundramanq4 жыл бұрын
A heli coil was my first thought also. Then I thought of the aluminum shavings from the heli coil tap getting into the transfer case. Still doable and permanent if you take the transfer case out and disassemble it so the case piece can be cleaned once done installing the coil. $$$
@bobd85534 жыл бұрын
Could you have made a permanent fix buy retreading before draining the old oil, so the old oil would catch the shavings and then drain, or just use a helicoil?
@bobbyturbopants4 жыл бұрын
Why ? I would have done the same , I would be fine with using silicone with the rare oil changes it needs

Thanks for saving his truck, I was worried you were going to have to retap and stake in an insert like a spark plug hole. Great fix!
@andrewramos87034 жыл бұрын
I agree with Brett Bond, a re-tap and insert is a proper, permanent fix. Spreading a bunch of sealant around an improperly torqued plug is not a good fix.

Even in the Toyota factory in Japan, sometimes they screw up with the overtightening of bolts and nuts. I wanted to replace the original serpentine belt on my wife's 2010 Toyota Yaris. I used Snap-on Flank Drive socket to remove lower bolt of an alternator. I completely stripped the head of that bolt and torque spec is only 40 Foot Pounds. I would never take my car to one of those quick lube places. I don't think that most of their employees are qualified and paid enough to care about customer's vehicles and I don't think they ever use a torque wrench. I knew there are always a few good people anywhere but I don't want to gamble with my car.

Cold welding is a common problem and using a socket wrench creates stress in the wrong location
@lordcromwell55123 жыл бұрын
You can either rethread the outlet to a larger size using a tap and dye or you could weld a nut over the hole and use the nut to hold the bolt.

In cases like that, I wonder if you could use a rubber plug. It sounds cheap but I recall older Dodge read-ends having rubber plugs that worked fine. Just a thought.

The place that ruined that cover by over torquing should buy a new cover and pay you your prevailing labor rate to really make that customer whole again. I believe you that the product is good and will hold up, but I would feel a whole lot better with a new cover. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

Good luck with them taking any responsibility, they never will. I got lazy once and took my suburban to one of those quick lubes places and they promptly stripped out my oil pan plug then told me it was already stripped. I changed the oil dozens of times myself and never a problem. Another time a friend took his van into a quick lube place and they filled his brake master cylinder with engine oil destroying his whole brake system. Never go to any of these places!!!!

that's why i work in my car. with the help of your video. this past Saturday i change the transmission fluid on my 2010 prius with 136,000 miles on it. the fluid was so dark, that i feel really bad. about not changing it sooner. hopefully my car can forgive me. and keep going for a long time. next Saturday i will do the radiator flush. great job my friend. i leave in Simi valley ca. maybe i can pay you a visit sometime too. @TheHamburgler1234 жыл бұрын
I was super hard on my Camry, mostly out of ignorance of required maintenance items, and probably didn't change the transmission fluid until ~120k miles. I've since put another 40k on it and the transmission feels just fine. Don't beat yourself up and use it as a learning experience. Honestly, your Prius is most likely going to have issues with the battery system before any transmission problems. From what I gather it's unusual if the batteries make it past 15 years and/or 200k miles. I'm not sure how strong the Toyota automatic transmissions are on a 2010 Prius but I reckon they could last 250k miles, possibly longer.

The problem with the differential oil plugs are SUPER TIGHT for some reasons. It looks like they torqued it down with a 150/ft-lbs (no way it was 40 /ft-lbs). The 10mm hex bolt is also not easily accessible in most cases (like the 2016 RAV4) which adds to the problem of stripping the bolt or threads.
@MrCROBosanceros4 жыл бұрын
Most likely recommended torque spec for that fill and drain plug is 29 Foot Pounds.
@harryl79464 жыл бұрын
Broj 1 Correct sir, 29ft lbs converts to 39 newton meters of torque
@paulc25484 жыл бұрын
@@harryl7946 I would think at 29 ft/lbs, it would be easily loosen without struggling but my 2016 RAV4, I can pull with all my might (even with the leveraged extension) it won't come loose. I am now spraying DW40 for the past several days, hoping it would help when I try again next weekend.

@@paulc2548 Worst case scenario you can use a bolt extractor socket. I had to kill my old fill plug on my 98 4Runner transfer case because it simply wouldn't budge. The extractor worked like a charm and the replacement fill plug was only $7. I spent way too much time and effort trying other things.

Nice fix, it's good seeing products you recommend. - What do you think of drilling and tapping a smaller hole in the original plug, then using really strong liquid metal epoxy to permanently seal it into place, and use the smaller hole to add the oil?
@stevanrose74392 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea. I’ve been thinking about ways to repair threads like this and a threaded hole in the filler plug would work. The filler plug could be put in permanently with a small removable plug in it.

I just did the transfer case on my 2019 and as far as I can remember both the fill and the drain used the same exact bolt and the bolts in your video the one going in the fill looked different versus the one going in the drain.
@TheHamburgler1234 жыл бұрын
Drain bolts are magnetic to catch bits of metal shavings. Fill bolts are just plain old bolts, no magnets.
@andreasm28824 жыл бұрын
@@TheHamburgler123 yes, but for some reason the transfer case drain does not have a magnet attached to it and rewatching the video it looks the same on this truck as well. I just checked Toyota forum and it looks like a topic that has come up a bit and obviously it looks like there are kits out there for this for under $10.00.
@stokedonearth50974 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing if you had to retap it you'd have to take off the whole transfer case cover because of all the metal shavings it creates and the tap would go to far into the case? I like your fix better.

The oil change shop that screwed that up should have paid for the cost to replace! I certainly would demand that, and prepare to take them to small claims court if necessary. Then I'd repair it like this, pocket the difference, and never go back to the morons.

Put a time-sert in it and do it right. I hear about these fast oil change places doing this all the time. I would never let them do a simple oil change. Even the dealerships have the brand new workers who aspire to be mechanics someday do the oil changes.

That fipg gasket maker does wonders. I probably do the same to something that old. I used to have a company truck and jiffy lube was the few approved place I could take it in for oil change. Man, they wrote off so many things that they didn’t even do. They love it when these fleet vehicles come in as they know it’s a cash cow. One time they even rounded off my oil drain plug and was finding ways to not be blamed for it. They told me to come back as the manager only one who knows what to do and he wasn’t there. Really? The only thing I would do with my personal cars at jiffy lube is just the yearly inspection at my state of Texas. I feel bad for any cars that have to go there for maintenance and for customers paying for shady work.
@flat4forlife5884 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I am shocked someone with a taco would even go to one of those quick lube places. Everyone or most everyone knows they pretty much screw up everything as they hire young inexperienced mechanics who LEARN on the job on your vehicle. This should have been documented then brought up with the corporate office for a permanent repair. The people who did the work 100% knew what they did, but of course, never own up to it and tell the customer then make it right. This is the world we live in these days ugh.

@gzhang2074 жыл бұрын
It is a good fix. Would it last 10K miles? Probably since the fill level will only drop and has less pressure than the drain plug. A proper fix is complicated as when tapping a slightly larger thread hole, the shavings may enter the transfer oil pan. This leaves only one safe option: using an insert.

A fill plug is not a pressure-critical seal.. it’s mainly a cap to keep out debris and sloshing out of fluid. Some are even vented. This repair is fine and avoids the risk of introducing metal shavings into the diff.
@keithhastings40924 жыл бұрын
That’s not a fix. This customer needs to be made whole again. This wasn’t it.
@andyeckel71954 жыл бұрын
I would not consider that a permanent repair IMHO. That is a threaded fastener (plug) for a reason, which is why Toyota designed it that way. Vibration, off-road use, heat, internal pressure and time may cause that to fail and start leaking again. It is more difficult and time consuming, but a threaded insert is what I would have insisted be performed ... by the oil change shop... after first questioning whether they had a competent tech who has actually done it before. Otherwise, I would take it elsewhere and insist on reimbursement. Or do it myself and insist on a full refund for the original oil change and never return.
@ronaldsmith43654 жыл бұрын
helicoil !!
@Big.j.0074 жыл бұрын
Gotta say I'm disappointed. Normally I really look forward to your tech tips, but this 1 is way off. At a minimum I would have used a helicoil, but I'd much rather see a timesert used. I think the sealant will work short term, but is far from a permanent repair.
