This Tacoma TRD Pro grill swap was filmed over the course of a few months to make sure everything was working and the TRD Pro imitation grill didnt fall apart and the sensor would keep working. TRD Pro grill I used in this video is HERE: theyotagarage....

Honestly the 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro grill worked fine without the garnish EXCEPT for when it was rainy or snowy, and the sensor got wet. Then it would stop working until everything dried off and got cleaned. Not a super big deal if you dont like the shiny-ness of the grill cover.

2 things. The shiny garnish that goes over the radar sensor has 2 "star" clips that hold the top in place and 2nd, you can use Xpel Stealth film to put over that shiny part to make it matte finish. Looks much better.

Everybodys swapping out those grills now except me it seems. I don't like the shiny cover on the TRD grill at all so I plasticoated the chrome trim on mine and sprayed it and the grill satin black. The tacoma off road grill looks good now after modifying it. (They sell the black trim piece on ebay if you dont want to paint it)

Hey zack Inside that Toyota emblem there is thin layer of material that helps focus radar cruise sensor beam that's why it's a shiny finish on the face.. your replacement cover looks like it should have the radar beam material .. cut open the emblem and see for yourself.. I cut open a Toyota Prius emblem and I'm sure it's the same for the Tacoma.. without the proper emblem you will notice that it detects cars in the lanes next to you.. what's the proper emblem the sensor will only detect the car in front of you like it's supposed to

you can probably just sand that glossy portion of plastic in front of the radar, although water might have a harder time beading up and rolling off when stopped, not sure.

Nice Truck I was told by Toyota changing the grill on my 2018 will void warranty on my truck. Their reason was the sensor is being moved lower and could cause the sensor not to work properly for my truck. Is this just BS?

I got news for you. Anytime it snows or rains hard. Sensor still goes off. I have a 2019 and have this problem. I recently went Toyota to have a TRD grill put in. They could not do it because the sensors do not match in the same place on the Toyota factory parts. But apparently they do on your aftermarket one. Thanks for the info.

still have my factory grill on, and driving today the sensor stopped working because it got covered in snow and slush. wiped it off when i stopped worked like nothing happened. Havnt had it in the rain yet though.

Update: the OE sensor cover does not fit the aftermarket grille; the tabs are different enough. I don't understand why MotorGenic includes a Chinese grille and a Toyota sensor cover that don't match! The whole thing is going back. There's reason the Toyota grille costs $400 and the Chinese $100!

I think the plastic you said was not necesary to avoid impact on the sensor, one of the function was keep water away from it.

Hey Zack, you can change halogen bulbs to HID bulbs. It will give more light on the road. Specially when off-roading.

You need to have the sensor reprogrammed to be adjusted for the height of the lift.

Demicron If you look at it, the logo sits lower in the heritage grill than it did in the stock grill. It "may" balance out just by the location on the new grill...

Man that original grill cannot be much uglier. Good choice. I would remove the shininess from the plastic piece with some acid or very fine sandpaper. It's quite distracting. Or even better just add a plastic foil in front of the sensor, behind the "original" honeycomb.

Looks like my toyota tacoma front shield window is made out of temporary gorrila glass, we start seeing grooves at level 6 with deep grooves at level 7.

Super late comment but here goes. Great video but I have to disagree with one thing. You say in rain and snow is when you need the sensor the most. As the sensor is for the Adaptive Cruise Control, I would argue that it doesn’t matter if it’s not working in those conditions as you should not be using cruise control in said situation.

I have heard with having a lift and the TRD Pro grille that you may experience the instrument cluster light up with a Christmas tree. I know you said you had some issues without the plastic piece and then again for a few days after that. Since then have you had any issues with your sensor. I have an off road and am looking to do the same thing and want to know if it’s worth it before I do. Thanks. Love the videos
