Just to share some info as an automotive technician that has recalibrated many of these sensors. Yes you are "just" moving the sensors up and down, left and right via shims. But big part you're missing out is that this is done in conjunction with targets set at a precise distance and height from vehicle. You then have to finely tune the angle of the sensor to the targets using a scan tool that is communicating with the control module. This recalibration neutralizes set values so the truck now knows precisely where objects are based off of engineered values and programming

Yeah the video title is horrible advice. The zero point for each sensor is firmware & cannot be reprogrammed on top of the recalibration. That is why there are unique OE part numbers for each OE grille type. That is why a unique sensor part number is included with the Genuine Accessory TRD lift kit.

Only time I have issues is in rain. Swapped the knock of garnish with oem trd pro garnish for $60. Boom no issue. I did place one normal sized washer at the beginning and that seem to work just fine when it not raining. Something with the plastic up front of the sensor did not like getting water droplets on it. Was driving it this morning and it triggered the yellow warning light as well as a message that it was unavailable. Parked it so I could go to work and when I left after work it was fine. @RobMotive

Not sure what you mean??
@rollee223
@rollee223 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobMotive Blake, already also pointed it out, that the 4 you pointed out in the video, are the bolts that actually hold the sensor together. It is the two bolts on the sides, one on each side, of the sensor, that actually hold the sensor onto the grill itself, along with the one screw at the top, that is used to adjust the sensor. So, if you just loosen the bolts on each side, then take out the screw at the top of the sensor, insert a thin washer between the sensor and the area where the screw inserts into, then put the screw back in, the sensor will then be adjusted at an ever so slight angle, just enough to then have it angle at about the same area as it was in the stock grill. Of course, all this is moot if one has a truck that they raised, as someone we both know has done!

So, without the techstream, and targets, you will not know if your shims after correct. FYI the techstream lite mongoose cable is around $500, then you need a laptop to run the Toyota programming, and the targets. You might be able to do this with a generic scan tool, but a decent bi-directional scan tool is around $1000. The millimeter wave radar sensor is responsible for some of the autonomous features on your truck, and a lot of others. Without the proper calibration, which deals with more than eyeballing, and shims, you can affect the autonomous braking, the adaptive cruise, and potentially cause an accident. ADAS is an integral part of many modern cars, and calibration needs to be performed precisely. $700 is getting off easy vs a potential front end collision.

Front TRD grill with new radar sensor and new harness. That radar sensor we don’t adjust with washers…..it just you tight the screws that’s it,because when you disconnect the radar harness all Christmas light stay on the dash until you recalibrate radar sensor. Even no lights comes on you still need to recalibrate because you change sensor height which is important.when you cruising if radar sensor is not on right position possible crash the car. I don’t know how to do manually if there is one,measure 3 meters from front grill put special target.we use tech-stream.

Why hasn't the aftermarket come up with a mounting that is behind the Toyota badge and sealed? That would put the sensor in the same position as the stock grille. Way to much r and d for these Chinese companies that already invested heavily into the molds for their replicas, also, they are trying to cater to all Tacomas years. I belive 2018-2023 they all have toyta SAFTEY sense radar bulit in the normal stock badge location, only trd pros will have an actual oem garnish cover that has been factory calibrated to work with the lower grill location. These knock offs cater to both to thoes who do not have it, and provide a tss cover to thoes who do, however non trd pro tss that are relocated using these grills were not calibrated to the relocated postion about a good 6-7 inchs lower. I think if most folks who got these covers just bought the oem pro garnish cover, they would be fine. Mine works okay, but using the Adaptive cruise control is so annoying as it will slam on the breaks way before it needs to or up shift and Rev to forever and stay in that gear way long. The only thing I care about tss is the pre Collison braking, which seems pretty crappy even in stock location

The sensor absolutely does not need to be adjusted when unplugged. Its only needs the proper garnish and be leveled at a 90 degree angle. In some cases you might get lucky with some garnishes but its risky. That's why toyota charges $200-$300 for a little piece. You would have better luck with a AJT relocation mount from AJT.

Ok, I understand not wanting to take it to the dealer, but that is a safety item you are messing with, and before you go saying that adding washers fixes it, you should do some extensive research. Cause your wrong and what ever dealer did that is also wrong. The sensor itself has a center that is utilized to actually read vehicles in front of it more accurately. A proper reflector is what is supposed to be utilized to adjust it. It’s more of an internal aiming then a physical one. Telling people that it’s ok to put washers on it is like saying I don’t need to hold on to the wheel as I drive 70 on the highway. There are other options aside from the dealer, do some research and you can even find someone like me to come out and do it properly for not $700. You can also ask about getting the system deactivated if you don’t even use it, no error no safety issue.

@@RobMotive my hopes and dreams of getting a pro grille were crushed today when the dealer denied to sell me a grill unless I had a pro VIN, and then I saw the OEM garnish price $300+,and lastly they said they would "recalibrate" my sensor if I get a my hands on a grill for a very affordable and small fee of $420. The garnish can be had many places for under $75. There are many Pro vin numbers listed on dealer websites. “Recalibration” can be done yourself. I’ve mentioned these things in my videos. It can be done with a little ingenuity 👍
