I did the same 4 speaker upgrade with the factory unit 2 years ago. Make sure you use the sound matting behind the plastic adapters. Over time, the speakers will loosen the bolts and rattle against the metal body. I thought I had 2 blown fronts, but it was simply the plastic bracket rattling from the speaker bass. Put a sheet of sound matting over the speaker opening, cut around the hole with a blade, mount the plastic adapter, and insert the speaker. This also provides a better seal between the speaker and door allowing for cleaner bass and sound. Think of it as a sealed speaker box.
@Tacomaholic5 жыл бұрын
That's a great tip. I'll probably do that soon.
@jeremyt77525 жыл бұрын
@@Tacomaholic do it! Especially if you live in a warm climate. Over time, those plastic speaker brackets will warp slightly due to heat. I got mine from Crutchfield. The sound deadening material will absorb some of the warping, but still keep a good seal. Been there done that.

Pro tip on removing the door plastic: Invert a can of canned air; this will freeze the 'tar' holding the plastic on and keep things very clean. Work in small sections, and it'll pop free without leaving strings of tar covering everything. It also makes it easy to reinstall that plastic, and... REINSTALL THAT PLASTIC!

As an FYI, there is a small hole in the top of the mounting bracket that can be used to route the speaker wires from speaker to connector. No need to cut a hole in the grommet. Connector will connect on the outside of the door in case you need to disconnect it later.
@BMMEC20094 жыл бұрын
Plus the connector on the inside of the door instead of between the door card and the metal, might be something for the power window to get caught on. My 09 has the JBL system. So I haven't checked for a speaker upgrade yet.

Good professional vid editing. 1) The black glue is butyl rubber. A heat gun and metal scraper will get most of it off. Then go back and scrape it to a thinner coat & it'll be fine. 2) Putting in a new head unit with more power really does necessitate thicker wires. Man, I'm struggling with that right now. I like this initial idea of plug-n-play with sound deadening. A good way to cheaply upgrade. Happy Trails!

Just a note to say thank you for all your great videos. The first mod that I did on my 2014 Tacoma Access was installing the UNI filter. My latest mod was sound deadening the doors, upgrading my stereo with the Subaru Kicker tweeters and new 6 x 9 speakers. The Rockfords are a bit expensive in Canada so I went with the Kicker DSC6930 that I found on sale. The only issue is that the holes on the speakers did not align with the ones on Metra bracket, so I had to drill a small pilot hole for the fourth screw. Thanks to your videos the install was super easy and the speakers sound amazing. Thanks again for all the help.

Can I offer a simpler solution to the Dremel...The tabs you want to remove all have a slight slit in them all you need to do is take some duck bill pliers and pry them off. If you sound deaden the inside part of the door, close up all the holes, it creates a self made speaker enclosure. Also helps keep the door panel from creating rattles when the volume is turned up.

Oh and I also put the plastic back in place to cover the holes. The difference in how quiet it is and the stereo sound is fantastic! Thanks for all the hard work. Oh, and yah those tabs in the inside just snap off, no dremel needed.

Also, on the front door brackets, the 4 holes don't line up with the holes in the speakers for the screws. Only 2 line up at once. And those holes in the brackets don't really hold the screws very tight at all. (Opposite problem as the rear door speaker mounts.)

Great video! I did the Rockford Fosgate and Kicker audio upgrades just as shown in these super helpful videos. What a difference in sound quality too! Tacomaholic sure helped this computer nerd give his 2011 Tacoma some new life and it's not expensive to do! =)

Thanks for sharing. Did the same thing to my Taco a couple years ago. I would recommend thought soldering the speaker connectors on rather then just letting friction and tension hold them in place. Ended up having to pull my doors about a few times because the cables came off.

I replaced my speakers in my 2023 as well. Not a big fan of “plug & play”, mainly because there is an assumption that one connector just plugs right into the factory plug and everything is fine. Come to find out that the right front speaker the polarity was reversed. I knew better but just double checking everything before buttoning it back up only takes 1 minute with a PT9.

Ok, now that you’ve had this system awhile, what’s your opinion about the sound? Would you still stay with your choice on Rockford Fosgate? Or go to a different brand? I really appreciate the time you took with this video
@Tacomaholic5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Michael! I would think that if you aren't running an amp to the aftermarket door speakers (like in my case) that any of the big name brands will probably sound about the same. I'm very pleased with the Rockford Fosgate setup and the price is very reasonable.
@DirtyJobsGuy15 жыл бұрын
Tacomaholic perfect! That’s exactly how I was planning on doing mine. The only thing I might do would be to also get the tweeters at the same time. I figured if the door panel is off, you might as well right?

A lot of installers put foam around the back of the speakers & adapter where it touches the door panel. Also they use something called Stinger Fast Rings or equivalent.
@Tacomaholic2 жыл бұрын
I looked into doing the Stinger Rings at the time but a bunch of people who ran them said they weren't worth it.
@BlackLung9112 жыл бұрын
@@Tacomaholic OK. I didn't use them in my XA30 RAV4 either just sound deadening, foam around the speakers & an 8 inch under seat sub with onboard amp. All my speakers & sub are from Focal with Flax Evo in front doors & Focal Access co axials in rear.

@tjbroome15 жыл бұрын
Tacomaholic it’s designed to work with the stock head unit and is a better option than normal amp, also priced pretty well, taco tunes has top of the line speakers is why they’re setup is a little pricey but honestly most aftermarket upgrades will be significant, would go with the components though over a 2 way speaker, you will notice the difference

i would have done all components, and 6.5”s up front instead of 6x9s. can’t go wrong with jl audio. an amp would help out greatly but you’d have to run wires. great vid though!!!
@MichaelWilliams-qk9rm5 жыл бұрын
dexter morgan I did this upgrade but did go with 6x9’s for the front. Much better bass response than you’ll get from the 6.5’s. Go to crutchfield.com. They are really good. I ended up putting a sub in the back as well as an amp. System sound awesome now.

Another great video Brian good job! I have virtually the same set up in my truck and run it with xav-ax 100 head unit. They have newer models of this unit now. I also have 210 ounce kicker comp RT subs shallow mount and a ported box as well behind must rear seats I know that’s probably not an option for you but it does sound killer! The sound system is basically plug-and-play minus the subs if you want links I could provide them Foria the head unit has Apple CarPlay and all the awesome stuff that you would probably want in a modern vehicle. It also provides about 50 W of power from the head unit so it gives you a decent little boost in performance as well from the stock head unit
@Tacomaholic5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian! Yeah adding a subwoofer isn't going to be an option with my molle rack in the back but please send me a link for the head unit as I might upgrade that too.
@BrianSmith-ws7gl5 жыл бұрын
Tacomaholic Here is a link to the 3 models available for the head unit I have the XAV AX 100 which is the first generation of the head unit but the 1000 is basically the same thing I have with a few additional features. They are actually getting ready to come out with the XAVAX7000 which will actually add 100 W of power and is actually powerful enough to power our subs directly from a head unit which is crazy. I recently just got a Toyota Corolla in addition to my Tacoma because it guzzles gas as you know LOL. Anyways here’s the link! www.crutchfield.com/g_462350/Apple-CarPlay-Compatible-Receivers.html?tp=72357#&avf=Y&nvpair=FFBrand|Sony

was looking to upgrade my 2000 Tacoma Prerunner extra cab was wondering if you had any videos on that
@Tacomaholic5 жыл бұрын
When I entered the specs for a 2000 Tacoma on Amazon it's saying that vehicle is compatible with the wire adapters ( amzn.to/2Zs8QO1 ) which should be the main area of concern. Aside from that this setup should work fine assuming your Tacoma has the same size door speakers in front (6x9) and back (6.5).
@KubieSnacksz4 жыл бұрын
The speakers have been out of stock for a while, got any new links?
@Tacomaholic4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've noticed that. You could go this route which is 4 of the 6.5" speakers (vs having the 6x9 up front): amzn.to/2ZLV07b . Or you could get the 6x9s ( amzn.to/3fdFSWs ) and the 6.5s ( amzn.to/3fdFSWs ) separately.
