I did the same 4 speaker upgrade with the factory unit 2 years ago. Make sure you use the sound matting behind the plastic adapters. Over time, the speakers will loosen the bolts and rattle against the metal body. I thought I had 2 blown fronts, but it was simply the plastic bracket rattling from the speaker bass. Put a sheet of sound matting over the speaker opening, cut around the hole with a blade, mount the plastic adapter, and insert the speaker. This also provides a better seal between the speaker and door allowing for cleaner bass and sound. Think of it as a sealed speaker box.
@Tacomaholic5 жыл бұрын
That's a great tip. I'll probably do that soon.
@jeremyt77525 жыл бұрын
@@Tacomaholic do it! Especially if you live in a warm climate. Over time, those plastic speaker brackets will warp slightly due to heat. I got mine from Crutchfield. The sound deadening material will absorb some of the warping, but still keep a good seal. Been there done that.

Pro tip on removing the door plastic: Invert a can of canned air; this will freeze the 'tar' holding the plastic on and keep things very clean. Work in small sections, and it'll pop free without leaving strings of tar covering everything. It also makes it easy to reinstall that plastic, and... REINSTALL THAT PLASTIC!

As an FYI, there is a small hole in the top of the mounting bracket that can be used to route the speaker wires from speaker to connector. No need to cut a hole in the grommet. Connector will connect on the outside of the door in case you need to disconnect it later.
@BMMEC20094 жыл бұрын
Plus the connector on the inside of the door instead of between the door card and the metal, might be something for the power window to get caught on. My 09 has the JBL system. So I haven't checked for a speaker upgrade yet.

Good professional vid editing. 1) The black glue is butyl rubber. A heat gun and metal scraper will get most of it off. Then go back and scrape it to a thinner coat & it'll be fine. 2) Putting in a new head unit with more power really does necessitate thicker wires. Man, I'm struggling with that right now. I like this initial idea of plug-n-play with sound deadening. A good way to cheaply upgrade. Happy Trails!

Just a note to say thank you for all your great videos. The first mod that I did on my 2014 Tacoma Access was installing the UNI filter. My latest mod was sound deadening the doors, upgrading my stereo with the Subaru Kicker tweeters and new 6 x 9 speakers. The Rockfords are a bit expensive in Canada so I went with the Kicker DSC6930 that I found on sale. The only issue is that the holes on the speakers did not align with the ones on Metra bracket, so I had to drill a small pilot hole for the fourth screw. Thanks to your videos the install was super easy and the speakers sound amazing. Thanks again for all the help.

Also, on the front door brackets, the 4 holes don't line up with the holes in the speakers for the screws. Only 2 line up at once. And those holes in the brackets don't really hold the screws very tight at all. (Opposite problem as the rear door speaker mounts.)
@MichaelWilliams-qk9rm5 жыл бұрын
If you sound deaden the inside part of the door, close up all the holes, it creates a self made speaker enclosure. Also helps keep the door panel from creating rattles when the volume is turned up.

Oh and I also put the plastic back in place to cover the holes. The difference in how quiet it is and the stereo sound is fantastic! Thanks for all the hard work. When I entered the specs for a 2000 Tacoma on Amazon it's saying that vehicle is compatible with the wire adapters ( amzn.to/2Zs8QO1 ) which should be the main area of concern. Thanks so much Kevin! @Tacomaholic4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! I used the sound-deadening material as the moisture barrier as I've seen a ton of other vehicles do when researching. It separates the outer door from the inner door so does the same thing as the plastic.

@@Tacomaholic ok, thanks. never use sound deadening so I didn't have any idea if there was a negative to it. I was also concerned about rust from trapping the moisture between the material and the metal surface. Once again, loved the video, look forward to watching the other ones on your site. keep up the good work!

@@markanders1874 The bottom of the doors have drain holes where any excess moisture can exit. It's actually a good idea to check those a few times a year to make sure they aren't clogged with pollen or dirt. Thanks for watching!

My 2021 Tacoma TRD 4x4 OFF Road is way to noisy to warrant any kind of speaker upgrade. My truck is factory stock i.e. stock exhaust and stock tires. I hear road noise and exhaust noise along with chatter under the hood from the fuel injection (port and direct)...My Nissan Titan 4x4 Off Road was a much quieter truck. The noise level in my Tacoma is shocking. I brought it to the dealer...they said they are all like that...they even let my drive a similar Tacoma they had on the lot...same noisy truck as mine.

Adding the sound-deadening material to the doors will help alot with the road noise.

Blew my front speakers and got these exact same ones for my Tacoma after watching this. I can’t wait to install them. Have you had any issues adjusting the bass or any sound settings through your stock head unit ?

No issues at all.

Thanks so much for this and your tweeter video. Have everything prepped just waiting for the speakers to be delivered tomorrow. Super excited

Thanks for sharing. Did the same thing to my Taco a couple years ago. I would recommend thought soldering the speaker connectors on rather then just letting friction and tension hold them in place. Ended up having to pull my doors about a few times because the cables came off.

Have you done (or plans in future) to sound deaden the floor and roof? I'd love to be able to see a guide for that.

I haven't yet but do plan to do the roof. Not sure on the floor though.

I gotta say, if you are looking for a subwoofer that can be loud but still sounds great JL Audio is the way to go. I have 2 JL 10W3V3’s on a JL JX1000/1 d amplifier and they sound amazing. Also went with the taco tunes plug and play stuff with the Image Dynamixs 6.5 component speakers in the front and coaxial 6.5 in the rear. Powered by taco tunes 400 watt 4 channel amp. Very loud when you turn it all the way up, but also has very good sound quality

I would be interested in getting a sub but have a molle rack on the back wall of my Tacoma taking up all of that space, so I'm not sure where would be a good place to put one.

Ford Gt how much was your TacoTunes? I want to retain my stock head unit and steering wheel controls. A younger me would have ripped it all out and replaced it, but I'm wiser now and like the convinience of factory controls. Have you heard of anything similar to Taco tunes without the high price or bulk of the unit itself?

This video is sponsored by no body.... 🤣🤣 That was classic. I did my part for ya. Thanks for the video. Question how much louder were these speakers and how was the quality of sound? I'm looking for very low speakers that I will hook up to a amp, but just wondering what you thought of these ? Thanks for the video.
@Tacomaholic2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say how much louder, but definitely a better and more crisp sound compared to the stock ones.

i would have done all components, and 6.5”s up front instead of 6x9s. can’t go wrong with jl audio. an amp would help out greatly but you’d have to run wires. great vid though!!!
@MichaelWilliams-qk9rm5 жыл бұрын
dexter morgan I did this upgrade but did go with 6x9’s for the front. Much better bass response than you’ll get from the 6.5’s. Go to crutchfield.com. They are really good. I ended up putting a sub in the back as well as an amp. System sound awesome now.

Yeah I've noticed that. You could go this route which is 4 of the 6.5" speakers (vs having the 6x9 up front): amzn.to/2ZLV07b . Or you could get the 6x9s ( amzn.to/3fdFSWs ) and the 6.5s ( amzn.to/3fdFSWs ) separately.

Those speakers will never reach their full potential unless you hook up an amplifier to them. Your original head unit only sends at the most 15-20 watts RMS to those speakers and that’s most likely an over estimate on my part. So “watts RMS” is how much power a speaker can continuously handle. If you under-power speakers you actually end up missing a lot of sounds that those speakers are capable of. Most of those sounds will actually end up being the bass and mid frequencies because it takes more power to produce lower frequencies. Also I noticed you have separate mounted tweeters. You should get component-speakers instead of what you got which is two-way speakers. Two-way speakers are speakers that have a main woofer, which is the big speaker that produces your mids and some bass sounds, and a smaller speaker mounted in the middle of the main woofer. Typically the smaller woofer on a two-way speakers is a tweeter which produces higher frequencies like voices, cymbals, and high-hats. Now component speakers only contain the main woofer and many speaker companies sell component speakers in kits that also have tweeters that come with them, but are separate from the main woofer allowing you to mount it in a different location. The advantage of component speakers is how your head unit powers them. On the two-way speakers one set of wires is powering two speakers; the main woofer and the tweeter. The two-way speaker has built in resistors to divide the power up to the tweeter so it doesn’t get blown, but that ultimately sacrifices sound capabilities in your main woofer. In component speakers one set of wires is only powering one speaker, allowing the speaker to be fully capable. Another advantage with component speakers is you get a more stereo sound compared to two-way speakers, because of the separation of the main woofer and the tweeters. A very good website to check out is Crutchfield. They’ve been around since the 70’s. Back then they were an electronic store, but they only sold audio equipment. Now they have a very informational website. It allows you to choose what specific vehicle you have and then it shows you what speakers will fit in your vehicle and wether or not you’ll have to do any modifications. They offer free installation guides on there and when you purchase speakers for your vehicle they’ll give you all the necessary wire adapters if you need them. If you guys have questions just let me know! I’m happy to help. I’ve replaced my whole stereo in my truck recently and I’ve also helped friends install new speakers in their vehicles as well. I’m also finishing up school to become an electrician so I know a thing or two about how electricity works

Thanks for the video. I’ve been thinking about doing this, but also not upgrading the head unit, plus sub and all that. I have a single cab, so just the 6x9s and maybe the tweeters.
