so when fighting baton vs knife, the one using the baton should be trying to defend by attacking the arm holding the knife, not by praying the knife blade since the knife is to short. it's also a good idea to use superior range to strike at the head and ribs with the baton. if you want to really do this test properly you need to get the person with the knife in protective gear and test those things.

I think it is too big so hard to carry and conceal. It is too heavy and that is why it is hard to maneuver. Mine is only 21" and that is plenty. The cross guard I would consider a liability because it could catch on something and slow deployment. Also unnecessary. Seems most people forget we have two hands so I have a pepper spray or a stabby-pointy thing to the other hand as part of my EDC. A shot of Dog and Coyote Repellent changes things up pretty tidily.

Probably 90% of the value would be from looking intimidating and causing the assailant to decide it wasn't worth messing with you. For that purpose, I think a flashlight with surprise taser arc setting is even better. Plus, it's just so reasonable to already be carrying the flashlight at night. Having a reason to have it out already is a big plus. That's also why the sturdy umbrella is a good option.

If you are willing to trade a steel rod for an umbrella, you clearly don't know what you are talking about. In concept, I like it, but I think a redesign is warranted. Rotating the guard open should act like a 'forward assist' and push the baton into the fully extended and fully locked position, and you should not be able to collapse the baton without folding the guard.

I have been looking at videos of these, and I also thought the baton locked when the guard was opened until I saw this video. It's really begging for that to be the design. Why in the world is that NOT the design? Not having the baton lock creates danger for the wielder through unpredictability, shifting weight, and inaccuracy! It boggles my mind that it isn't actually designed the way it's clearly meant to be designed.

I'm not a big fan of the collapsing batons. I'd rather have a weapon that I can use to thrust, and batons are made to collapse when they strike something hard in a thrusting motion. However, the idea of a guard on a baton is interesting. Maybe they could add something that would lock the baton open when the guard is turned into place. That would be a very nice weapon.

Locking batons have been a thing for years now if you don't know
@Ilyas-ty6cy
@Ilyas-ty6cy Жыл бұрын
Well, the issue is, weapon that good for thrust motion mostly is not versatile to hide and carry around. But there's already baton with feature with automatic system in locking mode that exist more than decade ago. So when it's lengthed even showly it just locked automatically and permanently, and you just need to press the button on the bottom of the baton if you want to shorten it again. Usually these type of baton can be quite expensive. Also these type of baton is also already common to use by the Cops in many countries. But still, this type of baton with automatic lock feature, still can end up fail to handle something over-pressure thrust, so if you try to thrust object or person too hard than the lock can handle, sometimes the baton lock feature will unlocked it self because the lock can't handle pressure when it's too great. but that still much better than your typical classic manual baton that rely on friction to get locked. Also basically still the best thing you can get now as versatile combat stick.
@VTPSTTU
@VTPSTTU Жыл бұрын
@@stuffguru None of the batons that I've seen advertised have had a locking mechanism. All of them would close with a sharp axial tap on the end of the baton. I know that the "lock" in place when they are extended, but they unlock and collapse when struck hard on the end.
@VTPSTTU
@VTPSTTU Жыл бұрын
@@Ilyas-ty6cy Thanks, I have never seen this type of baton advertised. All of the ones I've seen have been without the button on the bottom that would hold the baton locked until released. I would consider the button to be a big improvement, but I understand how designing that system would add to the cost. Knowing that the lock system might still fail would discourage me from buying one.
@Ilyas-ty6cy
@Ilyas-ty6cy Жыл бұрын
@@VTPSTTU Well, I mean, these equipment are mean to use by officer or special unit police. Of course you will never hear or see advertisement about it. But base on my experience since I also own that type of baton, the lock actually still strong enough to be used for thrust in level to actually hurt person, even yes just to make sure just not overly hard especially to hard object, even with casual strength it's actually enough to hurt person especially when hit on the chest. Also just said you did it overly hard and the baton lock collapse, then no issue, you can just lengthed again, it's locked and it's ready for another thrust. Usually a known brand that sell this baton are, ASP Monadnock, Bonowi, and NEX. But for myself I basically have some connection to buy a subsidied version that used as standard equipment for a Cops in my country. So I can get it with cheaper price with no needed to pay for imported delivery cost and extra tax.

And for baton vs knife situation, I guess, you were just guarding yourself, but one hit to hed, with longer baton is game over. Hit, thrust, longer reach...baton is superior to knife. Knife wins only as a surprise, easily to hide weapon, or while held by someone who can be way better than someone using the baton. I was surprised you let yourself attack like that. Plus, footwork, you stood there and let yourself to be hit. But I guess, it was all for a semi-eductaional purposes, and part of it was to entertain. Not a bad thing to place on a baton, especially when you have a machete wielding attacker. I've served as a Law Enforcement Instructor for Firearms, OC, Hand to Hand and Tactical Baton. Unfortunately, all you were able to do against a knife user in a training scenario is block....as you had no training baton w/a handguard. I've found a baton to be one of the most effective LE weapons for combat scenarios within arms reach. When I used two I employ them as I would two short swords or w/one folded along my support-side forearm while the strong-side is poised to strike....two expandable PR-24's would be ideal but w/ Tactical Batons the support-side holds one in "reverse grip".

I really fail to see how you can implicate you are evaluating the self defense capability of a weapon when your evaluation style is so severely biased by what I have no doubt is your very well exercised practice of kenjutsu. The way the knife is being wielded would make any army instructor from any nation cringe to see the base grip flailing slice style. And to see a baton used to defend against that flailing with range mauling side parries is completely unbelievable. I understand that you were attempting to demonstrate the weapon only in a defensive role but sadly I believe you have enfolded how those weapons are more commonly used into the confines of the body motions more reflective of your sport and woefully negligent of actual self defense maneuvers. I believe a little research and practice of knife use as well as baton use in self defense scenarios would make for a far more realistic demonstration and evaluation of the efficacy of the weapon(s).

If you are only blocking trying to catch the blade of the knife with the baton of course you will get hit, I get this was a sparring test but the techniques and focus were wrong. This is a blunt weapon is meant to break bones, do not try to block something so small as a knife, strike it instead, aiming at the hand or arm that holds it, and keep your distance you have a longer reach.
@toshironif
@toshironif Жыл бұрын
A few notes on the way the testing was done. First, guards are to meant to reduce the likelihood of injury from an attack sliding down the "blade" (baton in this case). You do not parry with the guards...that would be stupid. That leads into that with the advantage in reach, the baton should be utilizing the range to attack. Second, the lady using the knife is targeting the hand. In a fight, you would target the body. If you can get the hand, that is a bonus not a tactical plan. If I can slash deep with the blade in your gut or sever the arteries in your legs; I am going to do that. Doubly so when your defensive tool doesn't posse a significant risk to me in a grappling situation (no edge or point).

That's the issue with the test for these batons...you were only testing it for defense. And the knife wielder knows in this test that the baton is NEVER going to strike back - hence she was fearless and always slashing non-stop. If she was told that baton user can strike back at ANY / EVERYTIME. The knife wielder is already beat psychologically as the batons have much better reach.

I think having this Baton defend against a knife is a big ask, as you can just be more agile with a knife. A weapon like a baton that is going to be less agile in the hand, but afford more reach than most weapons an assailant will use against you, demands that you use it pro-actively to beat an attacker back or batter their weapon aside, rather than fending attacks off, which does make the guard somewhat pointless. I think a more standard and less complicated design like you find in a Sai or Jitte would be more ideal if you really felt like you needed this feature in the design. Something that isn't going to add a lot of bulk and weight to the baton to make it more unwieldy, but with a rising parallel guard to the weapon for weapon captures and limb manipulation. Similarly with defending against the Kendo, it's again probably much lighter in the hand, with the added advantage of having two leverage points to give even more control to get around the defense of a baton in a flash. I don't know how you could have defended against her with that at all. I do like the idea of carrying a baton for defense, but in the telescoping design of how they deploy and retract, they are a little inconvenient and unreliable. I've never seen one that I felt too happy about.

of course it is hard to block a small knife with a large bulky object. harder to swing and counter for one, the knife wielder can move faster and stop and change directions much easier and faster. hence why they train you to go after the arm rather then try to stop the knife or deflect it as 99.99% of the time you get cut if you do, where as dodge the knife attack and going after arm lowers risk of being cut. may still get cut but you then have a high chance of disarming them and ending the fight before more cuts/stabs that put you down take place. best bet is to keep your distance against a knife if you don't have a firearm or ranged taster/prepper spray. using a baton best to also go for the arm to get them to drop the knife. a good hit to the arm anywhere really will cause almost anyone to drop the knife and attempt to shield the wounded arm. unless you go around wearing gauntlets and gloves that cannot be cut/stabbed through try to avoid knifes, go for arm if you cannot avoid.

Given a near infinitesimal chance that you can defend yourself via baton (both situation and focused enough that if the situation occurs, one can utilize it), the guard does seem to greatly increase the protection. I'm not sure that trying self defense won't get someone in more danger, but hey, guard vs. No guard, go with guard at a similar price.
@kaoskronostyche9939
@kaoskronostyche9939 Жыл бұрын
Why would you not be able to defend yourself with a baton? This guard is unnecessary and will only catch on something, slowing deployment plus the extra wasted split second to deploy the second "quillon." Moreover it is too big - harder to carry and conceal. I also ALWAYS have something for my other hand - pepper spray or something stabby-stabby ... depending on my mood ...

The problem I see is they are using the baton either as a sword or a shield, and it is not for defense. The tactical baton should be used as 100% quick offensive and run. Is not for a permanent or constant attack. Just hit hard a couple of times and retreat, run, go... This is why is "tactical". Otherwise, use a gun or else.

Really annoying that they SHOW the one with the Guards, then zoom in to SHOW the "Automatic" open feature that is on a Completely Different baton. STOP IT - It Makes you look Bad. The one with the Guard Does Not Come with Auto-open Feature. But it is a Very Nice Baton. If I bought another one I would go with the Medium length. I went long and it is a Monster. Would also think about the Auto-open baton but they do not seem to sale it. Edit: and the guard Cannot be Removed. Least not that I figured out.

For starters, I agree the guard is kind of weak. It's too short to act as a good cross guard, still giving some access to the hand. That said, I don't think the tests you did gave a fair shot to the baton either. Part of it is that the dagger/shinai user didn't have protective gear, and so couldn't be meaningfully engaged with, and so you guys tested the baton at both of its worst ranges. The dagger was always so close that basically any weapon other than another dagger would be useless without making space first, and the shinai had reach, and was allowed to use it. A better test IMO would be against an opponent in protective gear, using a dagger, starting at range, and allowing the baton user to retaliate. Most likely situation to actually happen in real life, since most people don't carry around swords these days :P Fun video though!

@Deathbystrudel
@Deathbystrudel Жыл бұрын
@@bowleggedbear The two main reasons are that in terms of knife attacks, the blade is so short that it can maneuver around the cross guard making it harder to catch regardless due to the range, and that techniques used for arm bars that would be used to immobilize the attacker (assuming you aren't going to do the smart thing of using the distance and striking the fingers) requires that the baton be laying mostly flat. The crossguard would act as a fulcrum/raised point allowing the attacker to slip/roll out of the lock.

@@Deathbystrudel I think you underestimate the striking power of a baton, and the speed. A dagger can maneuver for sure, but only when it's in range. The cross guard helps make a point forward defense more viable with a baton, helping to make good use of the range.

It also sometimes arrests when extented and then you can´t fold it anymore. Unfortunately, the place I ordered it from sent no information how to contact then, not even an adress, so I kind of feel ripped of. Moreso, the add I saw showed a longer version which could have also worked as a cane for wandering. Which it is not.

Rubber base ( possible hidden point /ice pick point for use in ice ). If this is spring actived ? It's an excellent walking aid could be legal because the design is aimed at a mobility aid. I'd welcome it instead of carrying a stick that can scare dogs and I may not need it but it's in my hand (in my way )

I would think that in order to use a baton with a guard effectively, you would have to thrown traditional baton technique out the window. It may make the baton a bit more of an effective defensive weapon in the hands of an amateur, but for someone who is trained in baton use I think it would be a novelty at best and a liability at worse. They're one of the most difficult less-than lethal weapons to use effectively, which is why they're not widely used outside of law enforcement. I think more instinctive weapons that rely on surprise over technique are more useful for the average civilian like kat knuckles, defensive sprays, kubotans, or stun guns.

Come on guys, batons aren't swords, some techniques employed are closer to a Kanto but not a Katana, and even then very different. Common baton techniques involve blocking by holding the baton by each end, and like a stave, restrict and pin an enemy. In my opinion, a guard is only useful if you are a skilled user, facing a skilled opponent, with a similar weapon. On a baton its more of a hindrance, making several forms difficult or impossible. And for the laymen, its better to be insanely aggressive when backed into a corner than being defensive. Inflict pain, keep at range, and look for an opening to escape. And if I'm being perfectly frank, between my 20+ years of hand to hand, military training, and practicing with every weapon I could ever find, a gun in your pocket is far more effective, with much less training. I have a Nata on my bullet proof vest, but I'd still reach for my 9mm first. Just incase Weaponism takes a look at my post, I do want to say I'm a huge fan. Of all the forms with all the weapons I've ever learned, Japanese swordsmanship has always been one of my favorites. Blade foot for life. And if this old fart could pass on one piece of advice it would be what my saber instructor used to tell me: Treat every weapon like it has a name, treat every name with respect and love as if it were your family name.

FINALLY, the REAL way to use a tool whether knife or baton. All that flowery nonsense from the Philippines or all that nonsense about locking arms or doing takedowns is absolute bullshit. THIS is how to fight - short, direct strokes and attack, attack, attack. Keep your opponent backing up and off balance. AND HIT OR CUT THEIR HAND. Anyone who has done Kendo knows that the experienced fighters will smack the "sword" out of a beginner's hand with hand, wrist and arm strikes. If your opponent can't hold their weapons then they can't use their weapon.

a baton base function is to strike with a reach advantage. if you are not doing that, there's no point to testing what the guard adds... i don't think the guard would make the biggest difference against a knife, that's a very short weapon, the target is too small to risk blocking that blade. where it would likely shine is if you are blocking a baseball bat or a similarly long weapon. also, i agree that baton with a guard really looks more like a lightsaber prop than a weapon.
