Without getting into every individual's reasons for joining the military, yes, they're related in that general sense. But conflating the two as "pretty much the same thing" goes too far, I think. One can say thanks to those who serve one's country via the military while not supporting some specific war. The treatment of Vietnam veterans was probably the biggest lesson in this.
