Good luck, I can speak basic Tagalog. I’m an American Latino. It took me about 7 months.

I was 15 when I left the Philippines for the US my younger brother was 9. That was almost 40 years ago. We still speak Tagalog fluently. The only words I have trouble with are the deep Tagalog words that we hardly ever used when I was living there anyway. Wondering how others would forget. Do you not have anyone to speak Tagalog with? I am married to an American and don’t speak Tagalog at home but I still know how.

She’s so good at this. A person can be married to Filipino in the US for so long and not know that much about Tagalog. The Filipinos are communicating our way over here so we can go a long time before picking up a lot. This is very helpful and really thorough, organized and well done.

Salamat po!! So happy Ate Pat! I have never know how to speak filipino even growing up with my mum using it to speak to me sometimes. I discovered your channel, and first video, and it helped me so so much in learning some basic vocab. I am 15 but your teaching style which is focused primarily for kids is an easy way for me to take in information at a better level than i could on other videos. Maraming masaya po ako!! I will continue watching your videos before i go to Phillipines again in 2 months after 12 years!! super excited

I stumbled upon a question on facebook as to where we properly put "po" in a sentence and I found this video. 😅 It is actually pretty difficult to define it into hard rules. The tips here are pretty good especially the "when-in-doubt-put-it-at-the-end." But of course, keep using that rule and the speaker tends to sound "cute". Like how a kid would use it... I tried to summarize it in my head but it still doesn't encompass all or maybe I'm wrong in some of these: a. "Po" is always after the Subject in a subject-predicate sentence order AND always after the main Verb/Adjective/Adverb in a predicate-subject sentence order b. It is always put after "hindi" if the sentence is negative. Hindi po malungkot si Ms. Pat. -VERSUS- Masaya po si Ms. Pat. / Hindi po siya papasok. -VERSUS- Papasok po siya. c. If the subject/main-predicate has the following enclitics, "Po" is always put after them: "ko", "mo", "na", "pa", "daw/raw", "din/rin", "lang/lamang" Ang pangalan ko po ay Jose. / Ang buhok mo po ay mahaba. / Ang guro na po ngayon ay si Bb. Pat. / Ang panauhin pa po ang nagsasalita. / Pipila daw po ang matanda. / May damdamin din po ang mga hayop. / Mikropono lang po ang bubuksan. d. Can either be put before (strict) or after (informal/cute) these enclitic words: "niyo/ninyo", "namin", "natin", "niya", "nila", "kita", "muna", "pala", "sana" Ang pangalan po niya / Ang pangalan niya po / Bibilhin po namin / Bibilhin namin po / Naupo po muna siya / Naupo muna po siya. e. Strictly before but may also be informally used after "ba" Matagal po ba? / Matagal ba po?

po/opo, ho/oho are the words for being polite and respectful. po is a shortened version of opo. and ho is the short version of oho. po/ho can be used interchangeably but po is more formal and commonly used - kumain ka na ba? Tapos na po or Tapos na ho. - opo and oho can be used to answer politely any questions that needed a yes answer. - kumain ka na ba? Opo or Oho - these are affirmative replies that in itself can be used showing respect The more formal replies will be - Opo, tapos na po Oho, tapos na ho. Formal negative reply will be Hindi po po Hindi pa ho

*Po* is _not_ the shortened version of *Opo* because they differ in meaning. They are different. *Opo* is I think the shortened version of *Oo po* .

Maybe you can explain a mystery for me? How can someone be to handsome to learn Tagalog? You see, I’m an American and when I married my beautiful Filipina bride I made her promise to teach me Tagalog. Which she did try but unfortunately there were certain Tagalog words I just couldn’t pronounce correctly. She tried over and over again to teach me how to pronounce those words but I just couldn’t seem to say them correctly to her satisfaction. So she gave up in frustration and walked out of the room pulling her hair and ranting in Tagalog. I wisely decided to just let her be. But a few days later I asked her to try and give me another Tagalog lesson. She smiled and said “No, I can’t”. I asked why? She then smiled very sweetly at me and said “You’re to gago to learn Tagalog.”. I asked her what gago meant and she smiled and said “Handsome”. Which is a mystery to me that I hope you can explain. How can a guy be to handsome to learn Tagalog?

I would really love to learn your language but every word looks like an anagram. For English people it’s very difficult to even pronounce the words in your language. Nothing in your language looks familiar that’s the problem. When I lived in France I learnt French very easily and quickly. So I do have an ear for languages, but your language just sounds so impossible to learn, sorry too difficult!!
