Drew, I have an ungodly amount of respect for you for sharing what you have in this video. While I can't really help with the addiction thing exactly, because it can be slightly different for everyone, I wanna share some info about why I watch your videos. I've been watching your tech channel videos since around mid 2017, and have watched pretty much every video you've released since, and enjoyed every minute of them. From having so many opinions and thoughts in common with you regarding Apple products, to having an incredible time hanging out during the Apple event reaction livestreams (formerly on Twitch, but more recently on KZbin which works much better), and to semi-more recently the skits you've been adding to the start of videos - all of these things are why I've continued to watch your content for all this time, and over that time I've been able to get to know how such a nice guy you are. I wish you the best with the ways you're trying to help those issues you raised, and I'm sure you'll figure out a way that works. I personally ended up buying the iPhone 13 Pro Max at launch, which I initially said I would keep for several years, just like you said you did, but unfortunately I couldn't help myself upgrading to the 14 Pro Max just 11 months later. I have never owned an iPhone for such a short amount of time before, and now I'm starting to realise how stupid it is for most people including myself to be upgrading so soon like that, when I had a perfectly working iPhone (which I'll be honest, I prefer some features over the 14PM such as longer battery and seemingly better photo & video quality from my experience). I can totally understand why you had those thoughts of 'I need to have this phone for my job', however I genuinely love the idea of you switching to the iPhone X, because I think it could actually be another part of content for your channel, where you can review the oldest supported iPhones whilst using them as your daily device. At the end of the day, all smartphones these days are basically the same, and we all realise that, so I think it's a really good thing for you to just force yourself to use an old one that you know is still perfectly usable to do all your tasks, even if a tiny bit slower, and not as much of a 'premium' experience. This video from you is very inspiring and I respect you for what you've shared. Even though this doesn't help that much and you deserve a lot more, I'm renewing my channel membership right now. ✌💙

thanks for getting personal on video! I love following your streams and I love getting to know creators I truly care for on a more personal, professional, and serious level. Funny enough I also struggled with screen time, I found that I was getting on average over 15 hours of screen time from 2020-EOY of 21 and it got better in 22 but ultimately I decided to pull the plug on social media and completely deleted my accounts and switched to a smaller form factor of a 14 pro rather than the max for the sake of having a smaller screen for me, and have managed to bring down my screen time to 4-7 hours a day instead and mainly from audio and actual useful things to me. I am one of yearly upgrades though i switched to a bi-yearly upgrade for the sake of being a tech nerd and wanting the latest and greatest. I am curious on the Ultra coming out later this year but I don’t know what would compel me to grab it. anyways take care !

I think it's great that you are doing this. Rampant consumerism is a huge problem in society too and I think it's good to show people that they really don't need the newest thing. Do upgrades make sense at times, of course. But so many people have to buy the newest phone each year when at this point most of the updates are gimmicky and don't really change how I use the phone at all. The only true big improvements I are the better cameras (which as you demonstrated are also good enough for most people now anyways), better battery life, and wireless charging. Beyond those things the vast majority of new features haven't changed how I use the phone AT all. I upgraded from a 6S to a 12 Pro in 2020, and even that felt like such a small upgrade compared to my 4 to 5S to 6S upgrades were (aside from battery life). Since buying the 12 Pro I haven't seen a single other thing that was a big enough improvement to make it worth upgrading. I think I'm going to ride this phone until it isn't supported anymore. 120Hz is nice, but truly I don't need it, the camera's in my 12 Pro are good enough now that I really don't care about further improvements there either. I only just upgraded my mid 2012 classic MacBook Pro to a new M2 Max MacBook Pro. I only went big on it because I'm planning on keeping this for a loooooong time too.

Love this video so much and every single point you've made. Not a lot of people realize that smartphones right now only become dated because of software and app updates, not because of hardware features. It's how smartphone companies pressure us into buying newer models, even when it's evident that hardware upgrades are not that far off from the older models'. I also started using the iPhone X I got from my brother, and the only gripes I have about it are the poor battery life (at 83% Maximum Capacity) and standby time. I upgraded from the iPhone 6S, which still works wonderfully to this day-except for its battery and camera. Sometimes, I even suspect these smartphone companies are doing something to older phones to make them feel sluggish-any trick to fool us into thinking we need a new phone year after year. As for the size, I also hate how most phones are now sporting > 6-inch displays, and their weight keeps increasing as well. I feel a 6-inch screen and 174 g phone is the max size and weight I could go for. Anything bigger and heavier would already give me discomfort in the long run. And great job discussing smartphone addiction as well! It's certainly something we need to talk about a lot more in this day and age.

Thank you for your insight, Drew! I appreciate a lot of the points you made. For one, I still have the iPhone X since 2018 and I constantly see myself ogling at the latest iPhone unboxing, wishing that I could switch. But quite frankly, I don't need to. My iPhone has enough storage, the camera is fine, not many software hiccups... Honestly, the only reason why I would switch is to have the latest/greatest iPhone that's faster and has better cameras. But is it a NEED? Not really. And thank you for reiterating that message with this video. Also, I've been struggling with smartphone addiction as well. It's very hard to break. I see myself wasting hours on my phone with Shorts/Reels, and I hate that. It's something I want to break, and it's comforting to know that it's something you're working on as well. With that being said, I'm excited to watch the videos about your experience with the X! Keep making awesome content!

Great video Drew, still using my Xs Max for the big screen but just replaced my beautifully compact 6 with a 13 mini. The Xs needs a new battery (btw, the second battery in the 6 is lasting much better than the original) but then it will be good enough until the cameras get so good on the new ones I can’t resist (which was why I replaced my 1st iphone, a 5, with the 6, having seen the 10’ tall black and white photos advertising it on the London Underground). The 13 mini is a gem but I slightly miss the more rounded and comfortable body of the 6.

Super interesting perspective Drew. As some one he has struggled with smartphone addiction (to the point of it costing me a relationship) I know the position you’re in. I’m very curious to see how long Drew will hold on to that iPhone X. Part of me says he’ll only last for like only a month because it’s missing certain convenience features like continuity camera and MagSafe. But at the same time, since he’s still using a more modern MacBook, iPad, and watch, those devices can make up for the iPhone X’s deficiencies. So he might actually be able go for a few months or longer, maybe a full year if he really gets used to it. I guess it just depends on how much the lack of MagSafe or 120 hz bothers him, especially considering his Mac and iPad still have ProMotion, assuming he didn’t turn it off on those devices.

I went from the iPhone X to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I did this, at the time, primarily for the larger display size! I use my phone for nearly all my general “personal computing” day-to-day needs, rather than using a desktop or laptop. My eyes are also not the greatest, not getting any better, and so I wanted a large display so I can “see” things better! I actually thought the 12 Pro Max was too big and heavy when I first got it and almost returned it! Glad I didn’t, though. I love the 12 Pro Max, adjusted to the size and heft in about a week or so. That said, I still thought the iPhone X was (and still is) a great device! I also agree that “we” don’t need to upgrade so often! So I plan to hang onto my 12 Pro Max awhile longer. I got it in November 2020, after having the iPhone X for 3 years. Not sure exactly how long I’ll keep using the 12 Pro Max, but thinking at least another year or two. I don’t think I’d let the battery capacity drop below 80%, though. So I might need to get a new battery along the way, at some point. It’s at 86% right now after 2 years and 2 months. I feel like it has dropped quicker than expected, but it seemed to stabilize after I started keeping the charge between 30-90%. Not charging to 100% very often. And not letting it drop below 20% very often either. Since that change, it seems like it hasn’t dropped (in capacity) as quickly anymore. Anyhow. Aside from concerns about the battery health and battery performance, I have no problems with the 12 Pro Max, and with continuing to use it a bit longer. 😉

I really appreciate that Drew refuses to normalize purchasing a new expensive phone every year, in addition to a new expensive laptop, tablet, watch, etc. Most KZbinrs normalize spending hefty sums of money on new tech gear every year (their best intentions are at heart, I’m sure). So many of us viewers are tech enthusiasts who work 9-5 jobs and have mortgages/rent, car payments, groceries and children to prioritize. If I were to upgrade my tech gear every year I’d be a crappy husband and an irresponsible father. I also appreciate the mention of phone addiction and always thinking about work. Someday many of us will be on our deathbed remembering our lives and I guarantee none of us will think “jeez, when I was 32 I had the best year because my phone was so killer, and I made some really funny posts that got a lot of likes, and responded to work emails quickly.”

I really miss the e rounded design of my 11 Pro Max over the 14 Pro Max I moved to. I just couldn’t move back because I ran out of storage and needed to move to a 128gb phone.

@@framedthunder6436 I hear you about USB C, but I have an iPad Pro 10.5 (rounded) and an iPad Pro 11 M1 and I hold both a lot and it makes a difference to me. The 10.5 is more comfortable to hold than the 11. Trends swing back and forth anyway so everything will go back to squared design in a few years.

I would totally swap my space gray XS Max with you primarily for the battery life of your 13 Pro Max, weird camera be damned lol. I get it though. Maybe because the design of the XS Max was the last one from Jony Ive? It is beautiful

I use to do the two year cycles since from the iPhone 5 and currently have the 12 Pro Max. I’m not upgrading until iPhone goes USB-C. Once it does I think my upgrades will be even more sparse.

This video sends a good message about why older flagships are still great. I argue that older flagships are better than some newer ones due to the older models having more features.

I’m dealing with this addiction. I fix phones for a living. I struggle with that jealousy and greed. I have my SE 2 Watch, and want to go above the SE 2 phone with 2nd gen AirPods. I keep telling myself it’s okay and I don’t need the highest end device. I work on far nicer stylistically devices daily. I’m trying to break this so it’s good to know I’m not alone. Also the camera on these phones are fantastic. You can’t tell the difference. I’m still fixing the iPhone 6 for customers. I’m trying to push customers to newer devices in those cases for security reasons, but some people want a phone to be a phone.

10:17 Huh, I can but I can put that down very quickly. I jumped from AQUOS R to Galaxy Note 8-2K@120, IGZO (IPS?) LCD to 2K@60 Super AMOLED and I think I almost immediately got used to the latter.

I've been using my iPhone 6s Plus since Nov 2015 and until this year (2023) I never needed to have it serviced other then the battery. This year the screen finally gave up and half of the screen went half dark on the right side. I am still fighting myself not to buy a brand new phone and most likely will take the route of only renewing the screen if I can find it available. I'm against this endless need of following the latest tech which only ends up with you just wasting money on things which in reality you don't necessarily need to. I'm determined to fight the system!

Do you have an iPad Pro? If so. You’ll never get use to not having 120 hz in your iPhone. I have adjusted to haptic, but the 3D Touch was so cool. I’ve learned we’re not going back. But the face my 7 Plus didn’t have a button and I didn’t know that until I went to Apple and he said turn your phone off and notice the button doesn’t work. I was mind blown.

I use an iPhone 11 Pro daily (coming from an iPhone X) as it, for me at least, is the perfect iPhone. It has a triple camera setup like modern phones, with Night Mode and a 4K front facing camera. It’s got the more comfortable rounded design and fantastic battery life with a comfortable compact design without sacrificing screen size. Ofc it has its drawbacks such as the lack of 3D Touch, no ultra wide night mode, larger notch, no LiDAR and just general performance and camera improvements. But I love this phone, and it’s midnight green colour.

I applaud this change. It's bold, it's better for the environment and sustainability, it will be good for content. Might help you with your own smartphone usage, and it helps your mom out. Also agree that 5.8 to 5.10 in is pretty damn close to a perfect size for a phone. It's sad that these phone's basically are extinct now. Zenfone 9 is the only 📱 2022 that came out with that size I think.

Honestly, I never own an iPhone. I thought of buying an iPhone 13 after years of using Android phones but recently, I heard so many complaints of the phone suffering from yellowish or purple screens of death especially after updated to the latest version of iOS 16. To the point it begs me a question, would I rather spend a lot of money just for replacing that screen or just downgrade to XS or 11 & learn to live without the modern features?

I went from 12 Pro to SE1 on iOS 15 and 5S on iOS 9 for these same reasons. iOS 9 has my favorite post-skeuomorphic user interface and has very little social media support now, only a 6 year old version of Instagram works on it which keeps me from spending loads of time on it. SE1 on iOS 15 is a massive battery drain which makes me avoid social media apps on it altogether. Screen time settings never worked for me, limiting myself with the physical hardware worked far better. Funny that despite having 2 Primary phones now, it’s halved my screen time.

Using both the S21 and SE 3rd gen, and I got to say, I prefer using the SE sometimes as I really miss how compact phones used to be and how light they were. About refresh rates, I can’t see the difference when using both side by side, and the only difference I see is the battery life being worse when its enabled on the S21, so its really better off switching that off especially when I don’t see the difference and I dislike the extra battery drain

I kinda regret getting rid of my iPhone XS in place of a pixel 6 pro mid last year, it's nothing to do with apple vs android, it's just how it was such a big purchase yet the way I use my phone has hardly changed, except for the camera but still. 120hz is such a cool thing to have, but after getting used to it you literally do not care anymore.

Still like the iPhone X. It's just sad that Apple doesn't provide a lot of features as if the A11 isn't fast enough... I personally prefer the squared edges tho because yeah the rounded ones may feel smoother in the hand, the square ones fit much more secure in the hand because they're far less slippery. On my 13 Pro the only thing I really miss is the matte aluminum... the stainless steel looks bad after literally seconds and is way too slippery

Good for you man. I’ve been struggling with the same thing. I wonder if Screen Time setting is actually like the “recycling” symbol on plastic. Solely for making us feel better about using it but has the opposite effect that we actually use more social media instead. Idk currently disenchanted by phones atm

I still think that if the iPhone 15 came out with the current features with a 5.8" and 6.5" screen size I will be happy. Personally I think the iPhone 11 Pros are the best versions of features and size around but I have a XR so there's no point to upgrade to one. I just want the 5.8" form factor back maybe if the SE becomes a X body
@Chosen1Drums Жыл бұрын
This was very unexpected, but maybe that’s because I upgraded from an iPhone X recently. For me, battery life and poor Google Maps performance (freezing/lagging) was beginning to annoy me to the point I felt the need to upgrade after 5 years. Really enjoying my 14 Pro but if it weren’t for those 2 things I could’ve probably kept my X for another year.

I'm still using the 8+, which has mostly the same insides as the X. I see absolutely no reason to upgrade at the moment. And also, when people say that Apple is more expensive than Android phones, they don't consider the fact that a 5½ year old iPhone is very useable, and when you take that into consideration, the cost per year for an iPhone is probably cheaper than most Androids, and certainly cheaper than Android flagships.

I would switch back to my dad’s 11 promax that I gave him. But I didn’t like the size of my 10 plus I had issues with mine. It’s a good phone. Just my experience on mine wasn’t great. Mine had touch issues and then they replace the screen and forgot to plug in the speaker and then they gave me another phone and that one had to be replaced. I’ve heard those problems weren’t common so I think I just got a bad one
