I think you have convinced me to get a Casita! I recently retired and my wife and I want something to travel in. We have never owned an RV and after watching your Airstream videos I thought that was a great RV but expensive for us on a fixed income now...this would be great. I have already found a like new 2010 for $20k. I also really appreciate the detail on the remodel especially the bed modification with the memory foam mattress. Great idea. And I knew the casita had the build I want, the look I think of when I think of a travel trailer…. It’s almost like the VW bus is what a casita is on the road for a travel trailer…. We had a Casita a few years ago and loved it. We actually sold it as we had a deal on a 2008 Basecamp. A little more basic than the new ones but still very cool. Unfortunately the deal fell thru once we had a deal on the Casita. We have considered getting a brand new Casita as I love the new interior and the price but I really love the Basecamp and my wife really enjoyed being a part of the Airstream club. We met so many really nice people. You guys did a great job on the Casita. I did mine similar and sold it in a day.

That vent is where cold air goes into the furnace, the hot air comes out of the front of the furnace but you are correct, you can't block it. The Airstream is still prettier but I love the fact that the storage in my Casita can be locked to keep the contents in place. I see you have put baskets in your netting carriers to do the same thing but I think (maybe) I have more storage. The Basecamp 16x is what the 20x SHOULD be but I think they have dropped the ball by replacing the forward kitchen with a large "booth". A longer 20x configured like the 16x would attract my $ (potentially, I still love my Casita, it may be dated, as am I, but i am open to change). Keep safe!

Interesting you feel the swivel seats are a negative and want to change to bench. Why do you feel the swivel seats are a negative? It seems the cushy swivel seats would be a super nice item to have on protracted trips and/or where there are instances of inclement weather where one needs to spend a lot of time inside. Your comments appreciated!
@missykay8346 Жыл бұрын
@@richarde1355 The captain hair which is closest to the bed makes it very tight when at the stove or sink area. This chair protrudes a little further out than the other plus it seems to be tilted forward just a bit. Also. There is not way that we will be able to take a grandchild with us as no place to sleep which was poor planning on our part. I just don’t think that the chairs are that much more comfortable than the bench that would warrant the trade off of additional sleeping area as we thought when we made the decision. Definitely would not opt now for the chairs
@richarde1355 Жыл бұрын
@@missykay8346 That's interesting. I just purchased a month ago a Freedom Deluxe set up just the way you want it to be (where you can add a bed for a grandchild) from a couple who set it up that way - to accommodate their grandchild. I went the exact opposite of the direction you want to go - I took out the boxes, as there is only my girlfriend and me, and we don't have a need for that extra bed and prefer the cushy swivel seats. The former owners left the swivel seat pedestals in place and used them as support for the boxes. Plywood boxes were framed around the pedestals, with the pedestals as the centerpoint for each box, and then a top brace on each box then bolted to its respective pedestal. This kept the boxes in place. Removable back and seat cushions were then placed on the boxes. Those boxes were in SOLID. For a bed the owners then used a plywood piece, then placed a cushion on top, for the bed. A pretty cool setup, but the swivel seats are a better use for me, so the cushions and the boxes are store in my garage for now.

Did you just buy it to renovate it and sell it? I have been watching all your videos and thought you only lived in the Basecamp and the truck campers. Love your content. You have really inspired me. I'm torn between a Casita SD and a Basecamp!
@TailsofWanderlust Жыл бұрын
We bought this for my boyfriend so he could travel along with me. But in the end, a wheel ended up coming off (bad bearings), and he really didn't enjoy towing. So we ended up selling it for that reason. I lived in the Basecamp for 4 years, really didn't use the Casita much. It's a hard choice between the two! I'd say biggest thing I'd personally consider is that the bed in the Casita is much smaller than the Basecamp, but you have a separate table which is a huge benefit. Fewer windows in the Casita, the Basecamp has that whole front window setup. The Casita has also been around much longer, so you can find a good variety of ages and price ranges on it.

I'd need a Scamp instead of a Casita...I can stand up in the Scamp. :-) -- BR
@TailsofWanderlust3 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with the size of the Scamps. A few friends have them, but I don't recall them being much taller on the inside.
@billredding20003 жыл бұрын
@@TailsofWanderlust IIRC, after the fire (January 2006) at the Scamp factory (Backus, MN), they broke from their past -- HAD to make new fiberglass molds for their fiberglass shells -- and took that opportunity to make ceiling heights taller, whereas Casita remains stuck in the past ("we've always done it this way" -- yeah, but it's 2021 for gosh sake!) -- including their original lower-ceiling design. I'm unhappy with BOTH companies though because they still refuse to "get with the program" and offer at least ONE model geared to off-road use, meaning a much sturdier frame, axle and off-road tires. More people are into overlanding nowadays, but as in ALL segments of the RV industry, the makers/designers don't keep up with these trends. They're VERY slow to respond (IF at all). But as said, at least I can stand up in a Scamp. ;-) So since that fire, Scamps are 6'3" interior-height while MOST of the Casitas are 5'10" -- I think their larger trailer is 6'1" but to me, that's STILL too low. So no thanks on the Casita (for that and other reasons) -- I'd choose a Scamp instead. And, if I wanted a bit more room than a 16, AND had a truck I could put a fifth-wheel ("5er") hitch in the bed, I might well go for the Scamp 19 (a 5er), something Casita doesn't offer. 5ers are easier to tow, give you more interior space, AND pretty much the same length overall (meaning towing vehicle plus trailer = total length) on the road as towing their 16' trailers. The 19 Scamp 5er seems a win-win to me -- IF you already have a pickup truck/bed and you don't mind a 5er hitch being mounted in it. And like used Casitas, Scamp ALSO is an in-demand TT when it comes time for resale, and used ones of either brand that come up for sale don't sit around very long waiting for buyers. -- BR

You guys did an amazing job. I really like the idea of fiberglass. I don't know why they aren't more popular. It doesn't need the strength of a boat hull. Have you made a video of the new truck camper? I haven't seen a travel video with Michael. Is Michael a real person or an imaginary friend? I had an imaginary friend when I was little. I just saying

Haha! Many people ask if he is imaginary :). He doesn't like the limelight but he is in a couple videos briefly. He's one of the guys standing on the bumper in the utility bumper video and also is in the meal planning video. Haven't made a video on the truck camper yet, but that is in my backlog of videos to edit so hopefully soon!

I really like all the mods you made to your Spirit Deluxe. Nice job! We also have a Spirit Deluxe, 2019. I was curious what brand of mattress you got for the bed. We got a 3 inch piece of memory foam, which we cut to fit. While not expensive, It is difficult to move around on because we would tend to sink down into it so far. It is very difficult for the person in the back to get out, especially if someone else is in the bed at the time. Once settled in, on my side, it is comfortable to sleep on. Have you had any of those problems with the mattress you had? Was it finished with cloth, or just bare foam?
@TailsofWanderlust2 жыл бұрын
Hi! We only slept on the mattress a few times until we sold it. I do have a memory foam in my Basecamp which I do really love. Here is all the info if you are interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpbIhmajaMpgma8

So, as much as I "pooh pooh" the Casita, it's genuinely a long lasting and cozy lil camper. 17' is a pretty small space, but- note the wet bath, the full size bed and the amenities. Shag carpeting always was a thumbs down from me, even if I do understand the why of it. Nice job, looks great and I'm sure that a LiFePO4 battery & modest inverter will be next!

Hopefully! The new owner seemed to be excited about off-grid camping, so I'm sure those won't be too far behind!
@richardhouvener64233 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair the carpet is not shag but marine grade polypropylene broadloom. In other words, it doesn't mildew and it doesn't smell (at least mine doesn't after 5 years).
@billredding20003 жыл бұрын
@@richardhouvener6423 I also know it's not shag...I remember the 1970s -- great decade (actually, 1965-75 was, for ME). ;-) But that lining Casita uses IS called rat-fur in common-usage (but I'm sure Casita doesn't call it that!): A thin "fuzzy" material. Shag is entirely different (as you know). Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to make a Colorado Bulldog, followed by a Tequila Sunrise. Cheers, -- BR

Any idea on the trailer weight and/or the minimum vehicle you need to pull it?
@TailsofWanderlust3 жыл бұрын
Roughly 2750 dry weight. The 4Runner towed it very well, so anything that can support the GVW and tongue weight would work fine.

I tow mine with a Honda Civic. I can get 26 MPG at 55 MPH. Not too many RVs can do that. I keep the weight minimal. The generator has to ride in the car.

I hope his truck is capable (payload capacity) of carrying a truck-camper. Many of them are insanely-heavy even EMPTY (dry weight), then are overloaded by owners to where it's more wear & tear on their trucks, not to mention unsafe on the road. If I already had a big heavy-duty truck, I'd be looking at truck-campers also...but I don't so would have to buy a truck as well as the truck-camper! Both together would be a bit too pricey at the moment (like buying a Class B campervan ~$100K or so, if lucky). Happy trails, -- BR
@TailsofWanderlust3 жыл бұрын
You are right on point Bill. It's very easy to go over the payload on the trucks. We are looking at light weight off-road style ones (wedge or pop-up) due to that payload concern. Even the light ones still require some upgrades to the suspension (air bags, etc.) in order to support it. Still in research mode on models, but I'll post the info once we set one up.
@billredding20003 жыл бұрын
@@TailsofWanderlust Well, as long as he's not going to be carrying a "Mammoth" (by Host Industries) model 11-6 (19'3" overall length) truck-camper -- 3,995lbs EMPTY! -- then I guess it'll be okay... ;-) Lance's 1172 is nice, but it weighs 4175lbs empty! FEW trucks could safely carry one EMPTY, let alone LOADED. Outrageous! BTW, Cirrus (by NuCamp, which also makes the T@B TTs such as the 320 and 400) are high-quality truck-campers also. Their largest one is the 820 @ 2916lbs empty. And don't forget the other quality truck-camper brands, Arctic Fox & Big Foot -- both also 4-Season rated (IIRC). And again, sell quickly IF you can find one. Speaking of truck-campers in general, I've found it absolutely incredible HOW BIG these larger truck-campers feel when inside them compared to looking at them from OUTSIDE as they look so small. They remind me of my TARDIS... -- Dr. Who
