Very informative, when I was in the navy we called those navy showers. Rinse, then lather up and then rinse off. The navy shower head had a button you push to allow water flow. It had to be held in to work. Really helped save on water.

Thanks for the tips. And a tip for you in return.. if you apply a coat of car wax on the aluminum siding in the shower..stuff is repelled. We do that in our glass shower..a product called NuFinish..takes 10 minutes..apply, let dry and wipe with a terry towel! We also use a squeegee!

Wipe the interior wall down with a light coat of baby oil. Just soak a folded side of a rag with baby oil and wipe the entire surface. Store the cloth in a ziplock bag for next time. Water rolls right of without leaving water spots. Works on aluminum and stainless steal.

I was in the Navy in the early 70s. If the fresh water condensers we’re having problems we had to shower with filtered salt water to soap up then fresh water to rinse off. The Navy shower is still the standard on U.S. submarines.

I agree. A shower when hot and dusty, especially after a few days of being hot and dusty is wonderful. The shower in my Scamp works perfectly. However, my favorite cleaning episode took place before I had the Scamp. On a beautiful mid-October warm clear blue-sky day on the west slope of the Bighorns. At about 7,000 feet on a gently sloping sage/juniper covered plain. First, kneeling on an old quilt laid on the ground and bending over to wash and rinse my hair, and then standing to clean the rest of my body. Dipping warm water out of a bucket and dumping it on my hair and body. Soaping and rinsing. And then standing and toweling and letting the warm up-mountain wind dry my entire body. While looking for miles out over that gorgeous Wyoming landscape without another human in sight. The BEST and most satisfying cleaning episode ever.

An additional tip that I use, is to use ivory bar soap which is 100% biodegradable and eco-friendly (yeah I know who knew) with a vented soap case similar to the DecorRack 3 or the PORTINEER Carry-Dri MAX, and sit it on your Command Hook shelf. Ivory soap leaves no film and rinses off faster with less water than any other soap especially liquid soaps.

@@TailsofWanderlust the coolest thing that I didn't mention above is that besides being biodegradable it also was designed to float it floats unlike any other bar soaps and so that means that if you want to go to a pond to wash off and you worry about dropping your soap you don't have to you get wet soap up drop your soap and rinse and then put it away and whatever container and take it back to the camper. I really interesting thing to check out is the history of Ivory soap and you can find all that stuff out. It's been around since before I was born.

Good tips, being a male and short hair, I have found depending upon my activities for the day I don't always have to shower every day. However I am much more comfortable washing my hair at least every 2 days. so instead of using the shower I'll use a bucket and heating the water on the stove in a pan mix really hot water with some cold to get the temp right, once the water is in the bucket I'll dunk my head get wet, shampoo, dunk to rinse a couple of times and done. I might use a gallon or so. and feel great afterward for a much more comfortable sleep. Conserving water that way I can boondock a lot longer. I also carry anywhere from 7 to 21 extra gallons of water that I use for drinking or cooking. The water in the trailer tank is used for the toilet or outside shower or rinse in the sink. I try to limit what goes into the combo grey and black tank. However when ending my boondocking time I'll use any left over fresh water I might have to help flush out the gray/blank tank when dumping. Love your tip about heating the water for only 15 min or so and using only the hot. That has worked very well for me in my Basecamp 16X. I really love my Basecamp. I'm continually amazed at how comfortable I am in it. Thanks for all you do to promote the RV lifestyle whether it's full time or just weekends your tips are great!

Great video. We travel in a t@b 400 w/wetbath and your ideas/techniques are spot on. We do have a diff setup; our shower curtain is almost 360 so no splatter on the wall. Our hot water is on demand so it can handle two of us showering, but we use the dribble technique. For our shampoo etc., we have several GoToob tubes with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. on a cord hung in the shower. For t of us, we normally refill them once a week. Once we are on the road it takes 2-3 days to get into RV living and we adjust to quick showers. Safe travels

Hey Cass, you continue to be a major inspiration for my 18 year old daughter, who wants to get some sort of vehicle and go boondocking beginning in the summer when she is 20. She is also about 5'7" with long hair and LOVES showers so this hit right in her wheelhouse. You do a fantastic job of discussing inexpensive solutions to little things, versus just going with some sponsored boutique item. One question she has is have you considered getting a Starlink dish for your internet now that it is becoming more available? Seems like they may be a game-changer for folks like you. Thanks!

Starlink does not work like that. There is limited coverage for each area and your not permitted to move from location to location.

My Starlink just came in the mail last week! Although the router is broken, so I don't have it hooked up yet. It technically isn't "mobile" yet, so there's a few ways around that. Once I can get it to work and have tried it out a bit I'll put out a video.

I found Turkish towels are the best. They dry quickly. They aren’t as soft at first. I actually recommend washing them at the laundry mat with a pair of shoes (or something that is going to beat them up a bit) I have 2 and after washing them a couple of times- I actually enjoy them. I find terrycloth towels now feel weird when drying off! Microfiber towels are also a nice way to have a softer feel but quicker drying. Both of these towels pack down really small.

I am using microfiber towels now as they dry VERY quickly, esp. in the sun, but they kind of drag across my skin compared to regular house towels. That's a trade off I'm willing to make for a clean dry trailer after a shower. No mildew! I will have to try the dribble shower technique. My navy shower can always use another shortcut to save even more water. You are right in that a camp shower can make you feel great after a day's dirt and grime. Comforts that we take for granted at home can seem special when camping.

I am an avid user of Norwex products, I use them in my Basecamp and one of the best things is they dry super fast and never smell, i use it to wipe down everything after my shower and then just hang them up from their tabs on the corners and they dry, They are microfiber but it is a different microfiber than the ones you buy elsewhere. I wish I could give you a test towel and cloth, Thanks for the video

I just don't understand how cheaper Rvs have a shower miser, which recirculates the water back to your holding tanks while you get the right water temp, and Airstream does not. I'm sure the inventor of the shower miser would love to have this in every Rv. I love the concept.

I've been following you! Thanks for making these very helpful videos. We're considering purchasing a 20X BC and this video is handy. I have very long hair and I love my showers so this will take some getting used to. I even asked a question in one of the FB groups I'm on regarding the one sink in the BC.....what?! where do I wash my face and brush my teeth?! LOL!! But I think you've sold your BC now.... Anyway, happy travels!

Showering like the Japanese would probably be helpful here. That's basically what you're doing anyway. Just get a bucket for the beginning, soap up, then rinse off with whatever's in the bucket or use the shower head.

What you described is called by Navy and Coast Guard vets a Sea Shower. You only get x amount of time and x amount of water so every shower head is equipped like you have yours. Get wet, shut off shower, soap up, rinse off, done.

If that was my trailer, that shower drain line would have a diverter valve so that the drain water could be dispensed under the trailer. No different than having an outdoor shower.

Sadly, the shower drain is very short and drops directly into the black/gray tank. I've looked to do that, but the cost way outweighs the benefit

Did you consider installing a diverter valve on your shower drain, allowing the water to run to a container outside for later disposal?
@TailsofWanderlust
@TailsofWanderlust 2 жыл бұрын
I looked into it, but the drain drops directly into the tank, so there is no room to install one. It would take a lot of modification to make that work.

I am looking at Base Camp 16’s to purchase and have followed your channel from the gitgo. Although Base Camps are popular there is little on KZbin about camping in them but a ton of car salesman style ads selling them. I just found a new channel that does feature camping in a Base Camp. It’s new with only a few episodes but they are very very well done. Please watch a couple of episode and if you like them, give them a shout out. It’s a first class site in my opinion. It’s called Sir Campalot. PS: Hope you’re up to speed on your Alaska adventure…..I’m really looking forward to watching it!

Helpful video, thanks. I’ve been seriously considering basecamp but surprised at only having black/grey combo. The basic unit seems as off-road off-grid capable as any, but black water in those environments is the worse option. Ugh. Not very thoughtful design for the expense.

I found the drain in the shower (BC16) to be very slow draining and the water builds up, it that right? Also changing out the shower head and valve do you just need plumbers tape? I use puppy pee pads on the floor as a floor mat/rug, and then throw it away after the shower process, they work great at campground showers too.
@TailsofWanderlust
@TailsofWanderlust 2 жыл бұрын
As long as I keep the drain strainer clean, I haven't had an issue with it being slow draining. Do you have a clog somewhere in the drain? And yes, plumbers tape and you will need to swap out screws so a screw driver or drill.

Hi Cass! I had a question for switching out the shower head. Did you keep the original hose that came with the airstream? I have an international with a wet bath and it has the shower/faucet combination (my hose is inside the fiberglass). I've tried a couple of different heads with no luck. Looking into the specs the Marine Ambassador assembly is 15/1 M metric which I can't find much information on. Did you have those same issues?
@TailsofWanderlust
@TailsofWanderlust 10 ай бұрын
I changed out the hose to the one that came with the showerhead. It was an easy plug and play using plumbing tape. I’m not sure about the specs like you mention thou. I just put the same showerhead in my new truck camper and was able to use the old hose so I’d check that first
