@@erikosius No, its not. Italians outsourced a lot of their production over the years. Germany does not produce much, they mostly assemble parts bought elsewhere. Taiwan is by a huge margin the biggest producer of bike parts, frames, even complete bikes for a huge number of well known brands.

I scored an old American made Hurffy mountain bike a while back at a thrift shop. 1980s probably, kinda like new condition, must not have been ridden 20 miles, all original and stored inside. Low low tech, quill headset, one piece crank, but lots of gears and easy to ride. After many adjustments, lubing, some tire sealer it's good to go. It probably ought to hang on a wall somewhere but I plan to ride it.

As an avid cyclist who has been riding for over 20 years I’m amazed at even the high end bikes being outsourced to Taiwan. But I guess it’s just like many other industries, like microchips and smartphones, they have found a cheaper way to make products.

I imagine two new specific developments for bicycle parts. One would be integrated seat and seatposts. Once seats are installed, they are very rarely ever adjusted. Integrating them would be more lightweight and actually very si.ple to do. The second idea is curved carbon fiber cruiser style handlebars because many people in the world do use Dutch style handlebars that curve backwards towards the seat. For people cruising around in town, flat handlebars for aerodynamics is not really needed, it is better to have an upright posture to see the bustling traffic around you. Those are my two ideas for the industry as a bicyclist myself.
@standardannonymousguyАй бұрын
If integrated seat and seatposts would be cheaper to make AND the manufacturers could sell them for more, and they'd be lighter, then it is certainly a win-win-win.

Sustainability? I have about 25 bikes, mostly of them require very different, unique and not compatible repair tools. So, I have 20 different tools in my garage. Mostly of them I need 1 time in 2 years. Where is sustainability here? My modest request to the bike industry. Introduce please one-two standards. Mostly of components should be compatible.
@nickwinn78122 ай бұрын
There is nothing sustainable about owning 25 bikes. You can only ride one at a time. You may have varied uses for bikes which require a different bike for each. About 3 different bikes should cover that.
@James-pc2bz23 күн бұрын
I have somewhat the same problem, not quite 25 bikes though. Maybe the solution to that is joining a co-op repair group? Or start one, you have enough tools. Full compatibility is not possible, and would stifle tech advancement. In general, I find actually a high degree of compatibility in the bike world; I can usually put together a nice bike from random used parts bins.

Asian's obsession with everything American is sick. Taiwan has amazing bike brands like Giant and Merida and just in this intro video I saw 3 specialized bikes(American brand). Most bikes r made either in Taiwan or China. No wonder if they can get that Westerners bike on par if not cheaper than their own brand. but yes, some other Asian countries r bit too much on Western brands, perhaps because the culture and/or maybe their local bikes r suck.

@@iMadrid11 Guess what, all that profit goes into American(specialized) pocket and your brands/companies are just getting peanuts from those sales/production...but they would make so much more if your obsessed people chose Taiwanese brand instead of American. Thanks God there are some smart people around the world(not obsessed with Americans) who buy Taiwanese AMAZING bikes and support those brands and Taiwanese economy(something that taiwanese people don't do...and that is sad and pathetic).

Since Taiwanese people just prefer to buy the coolest and the most expensive bike to show off each other. Giant and Merida are seen on the road commonly. Other reason I think is price. In Taiwan, you have to pay more on Giant and Merida products than China’s price. It is ridiculous.
