For 30 years, Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold has drawn the definitive map to that treasure with his restaurant reviews. This dude goes into our neighborhoods and tastes the food and gives the good, the bad and the ugly. Having lived in mainland China and Eastern Europe myself, I appreciate a person who allows his passion and work to lead to places that people may avoid due to perceptions of crime or danger. Thank you Mr. Gold. Usually only cops are eating out there because thats their beat, but you didn't come with guns but with an open mind and empty stomach.

i like how this man only wrote about the food he liked and didn't write bad reviews about what he didn't like. some food critics use the power of the pen to bash and destroy a businessa cause they didn't like the food or the service or the owners....

between 1996 and 2001 i had an office near can'ter's deli, and i lived for thursdays. thursdays meant LA Weekly (and New Times).. so in essence, i had a standing date -- every thursday with jonathan gold....
