Pound for pound, the Chevy 302 is my favorite motor. Everyone loves the huge big blocks with tons of low end torque, but the short stroke in this little motor generates all of that high end power. It seems to be unappreciated by many. I gotta think a big block 396 in these smaller cars killed handling.

I like the big blocks...who doesn't...but I appreciate the older smaller small blocks too. As a teen, there was a guy in town who was considered unbeatable with his 396 nova. I think it was a 69, with 4 speed. He liked using a 283 better. He said it was even faster.

That brought back memories of my first car. Dad got a 67RS on a mechanics lean after the guy left it at his Texaco station for over a year and no payment on it. Gave it to me at 15 and we spent the next year tearing it down and building it. Is was a 350 4-bolt so probably out of a truck. We went with the R140 off road cam, 202 heads, mechanical 780 Holly and an M22. Needless to say this was not the best car for a 16 year old freshman to have. Thank God I "found" a spare key to my dad's gas station...

Bought a numbers matching '69 Z in 1985 for $6k. The motor was tired and I was young (aka stupid). Took it for a test run, missed a gear and..."ping!" Developed a knock that got progressively worse. Stripped her down and found a cracked piston, two cracked rods and a cracked head! $2,500 later and she was back on the road. Car was Cortez silver with black stripes. Non-functioning cowl hood (not sure it was stock). Had to sell her quick. Got $6,500. Another stupid move. Love that sound!

Like I've said in a couple of other videos, that sound is music to my ears. I once owned a '69 Z28 that sounded pretty much identical to this one. Also had the 410 Posi rear, same as this one does. Muncie tranny, Hurst shifter... the whole she-bang. Man, I miss those machines. These days, I drive a Honda and every time I think about my old Camaro, I go outside and spit on my Honda. @KHAN1350 just cruising I would guess around 14-16 mpg. It has 4:10 gears, so it revs high all the time. But it was not built for fuel economy and if you are concerned with that, don't buy or build one. It is a "toy" to take out and play with at times. And I buy 110 octane racing gas(at $7.30) a gallon) and mix it with 93 octane at the pump to give me a result of 100 octane. It runs great on this mixture. So a 60's muscle car is only for those people who are willing to spend the extra money.
@Sideler74

Unless it’s a 12:1 compression or boosted motor you’re wasting $7.30 gallon.

@@Sideler74 end result is 96 octane, not 100. I did the math wrong. Stock is 11:1... you miss understand. I mix 4 gallons 93 octane with 1 gallon 110. So really if the 18 gallon tank was almost empty, there is only 3 gallons of 110 octane in the tank at any 1 time. It is not like i have 18 gallons of $7.30 a gallon of gas in it.

No video can capture the smell and vibration of one of these pulling hard. I have one, 4:10s as well. Took the dual quads off and went back to the 780, more fun on the street that way. headers, 2 1/4 exhaust and modern ignition really wake this motor up. Its balanced to 8000, but power falls off at 7 with the stock cam. I had the off road cam with the quads, but power off idle was stupidly bad. It Dynoed at 450 with quads and off road cam, stock ignition.

Its a flowmaster so it might be 2.5, been a few years since I put it in. I was unhappy with the tone so I added a pair of resonating chambers similar to the way the chambered exhaust worked. It helped to get that tinny sound out at high rpm. My son wants to author some you tube videos so I told him I would show him how to get a lot of likes. In June some time I'll post some driving vids.

@@stocks4bt The benefits are: 5th gear will increase your top speed immensely. 6th gear will reduce your cruising rpm. Regardless of anything you may read from others, the truth is that 3 to 4k RPMs down the highway in a healthy car with a loud exhaust gets old pretty quick. Also, any 300+hp 8 cyl with a trans that has a final drive of 1:1 (ie no overdrive) is going to just drink gas. Ask me how I know....

4.10 is NOT too much gear for the street as some commenters say Its not as low as you think especially with the 2.20 or even 252 first gear. Run 411s in a 3180 lb "el, 26 in tire and with a 2.66 1st its borderline enough with a ratty cam. Engines with solid lifters that can turn some rpm turn a "low" gear into normal. Why so many ran 4.56 back in the day and drove just fine.

Mine had the 3.73 gears and would pull past the red line in 4th gear without a problem. My Dad was upset when I traded it off on a '74 Jeep CJ Renegade, as he would have bought it off me. My brother still has the CJ but the Z28 is history

@harddrivin1le your a idiot. I was not giving it all it has. The engine is not a fresh build. lets see what your "bone stock" can do in 2052 against a 2051 car. That is, if you still own it. Of course a newer car is going to be faster then a 42 yr old car that has a stock engine of the day. I read your other comments you post on other videos and it seems everything you have is better then what everyone else has. seems like you never got past 12 yrs. old. slower or not, I would still own a 1969.

The chevy 302 was also known as the 302 zapper by some of the older guys of the day.That car of yours with that 302 rebuilt and performance tweeks of an extra 5 degree back cut on the valves and a full port and polish on the heads,with some extra massaging on the intake runners(original 302 zapper highrise single plain intake).Your car would eat anything on the highway.That is an easy 500+ hp/8500-10,000 rpm mighty mouse.You have a beautiful car.These cars are real engineering at its best,unlike these new so called cars that need turbos,nos or blowers to produce performance that is nowhere near as these cars had back in 67-69.Nothing like the sound of a small block chevy v8 pulling 8000 rpm and better.Gives me tingle down my spine writing it down.Amen to the 302.

@fixitman21 Then you didnt have a 69 z28 they only came with 3.73s or 4.10s and four speeds only. I guess you could have changed the gears then maybe you would be correct. I doubt a 302 would get anywhere near 20, It was a purpose built race engine pretty much. You would have to have some high gearing just to move these things, no torque it was all or nothing with the z28.

What's with all these 2010s videos of muscle car owners on youtube using home video cameras from the early 90s?? Affordable HD camcorders were so ubiquitous back then, did they blow all their cash on tires? I mean it's great there are that many videos, but the grainy video and high-gain audio blowing out my speakers is giving me cancer.

these "grainy" videos were made when you were still wearing diapers.
