true, and they learned that it will end, that it will not harm them, and that afterwards there will be something nice. Though some cats realize they enjoy water once they gotten over their fear. Its just the same as with children. If you treat them right and have them have lots of positive or at least not scary experiences with water, they will at worst maybe not love swimming, but most will enjoy it and some will love it. But when you wait till they are 6 or 7 and the first experience is being thrown into a swimming pool, while everybody laughs about how afraid they are, they will HATE water and will build up fear over their live time. The issue for cats is not that they generally cannot like water, the problem is that humans have a tendency to not give a shit until the cat is sick and needs a medical bath urgently and then force the poor thing into a shower, that is cold, slippery, makes hissing noises and people hold them down and yell at them. And because humans are often just happy when its done, they let the cat go as soon as she is no longer dripping wet. Which makes her hide while still "in wet cloths" which means she is freezing like hell. So is there any wonder that so many cats hate the idea of getting a bath?

Yup, I totally agree, getting your cat used to a home bath as a kitten is a GREAT idea, for all the reasons mentioned in this vid. Cats may not "need" baths in the wild, but they also don't live much longer than 5 years on average, often dying of things like mange - so natural and better aren't always the same. Slow and gentle grooming and bathing when young and more open to new experiences will make it easier on you in the long run. Even Domestic Shorthairs can benefit from a bath twice a year or so. Too many people think nail trims are the same as declawing, and that baths are unhealthy and too stressful. This doesn't need to be the case. These are lovely cats, and they reflect well on their owners.

Such excellent advice about grooming and bathing cats. I have a Blue Point Birman who was shown to a Grand Premier title in CFA cat shows, and I can tell you that it is absolutely possible to have a cat that is accustomed to being bathed and groomed regularly. I’m not saying they ever learn to LOVE the bath, but they will tolerate it! I also have a Siberian (who has never been shown), and both cats willingly jump up onto the grooming table to be brushed and combed. They actually push each other out of the way. You never know how it may come in handy) my 1st cat had to have bowel sugery and for months after that he had verry thin bowel movement and I was soooo glad he was used to being bathed. He hid under furniture and waited for us to walk by, then he jumped out and sank his claws and teeth into our legs. My brother and I would wake up in the middle of the night and the cat would be walking along the tops of our furniture, stalking us. He was a champion show cat and our stepfather wouldn’t let us so much as tell the cat no. Fortunately, dogs exist and they are the most precious, entertaining, loyal, wonderful creatures.

We never bathed either of our two cats, mostly because we didnt need to. However, our eighteen year old boy started experiencing some health issues in his final six months, which meant going to the vet a few times. Poor boy experienced car sickness and a nervous tummy, so would also poop all over himself. So we had no choice but to try to shower his down. Turns out, not only did he cope with it, but he enjoyed it and he relaxed. Had we known that, we would have given him chilled out soaks more often. Bless his heart, he was such a mellow dude, so I shouldnt be shocked that he coped so well with the bath. We won't be having cats again, for various reasons, but if I had my cat days over again, I would start them on monthly baths from kittenhood. Such lovely cats in this video.
