He wasn't ready to die when he recorded this. He was only in his twenties. In the Seventies, however, I believe his Spirit was often in turmoil. At the end of his Las Vegas shows, he couldn't go to sleep before spending two or three hours singing gospel songs with his singers. He invited them to his hotel room to harmonize with him, and they would go through all of his old favorite gospel songs. It was the only thing that would give him peace in his soul

God is always there for us all.Elvis for all of his crazy life in the spotlight was a Christian. He loved gospel music growing up in Mississippi and he trained his voice singing these hymns. He has such a smooth voice but the feeling is from inside himself that comes through and is real.

If you want a song where Elvis is near the end of his life but reaches into your chest with his voice and wrenches out your soul, please listen to O Great Thou Art, live in 1977. The three grammies were all for gospel songs, including that one. Also worth a mention are the live performances in Vegas 1970, white jumpsuit, and seek out the vocal only version of Just Pretend and really immerse yourself in that inimitable sweet voice. ❤

JB he's the biggest star in this country's history not even close. Who's the biggest selling artist of all time over one and a half billion records. His satellite concert in 1973 was seen by 1.5 billion people when there were only 4 billion people on earth and there was no internet to promote it. Elvis out did the moon landing audience by more than two times that's how big Elvis was he's the biggest of all time bigger than Michael Jackson bigger than Frank Sinatra he's number one as far as being big in this country nobody comes close believe me.

Thank you for reacting to ELVIS singing Precious Lord Take my Hand , and your exactly correct in my opinion to the feeling of his emotional spirit and soul , I know that Last concert is extremely hard at times to watch , cause when he sings Hurt at the end with his dear friend, Charlie Hodge, it to me felt like he was saying Good Bye to the fans he loved so much , I was not at the concert, but I was blessed to see him 3 times in concert and He is a Priceless Gift from God, no one can touch your soul like Elvis , it's not even a possible,, ELVIS Left us 8.-16-77 , it's the worst day of my life and he was my 42 years old , and he just gave his heart and soul to making others smile, Elvis is not just a Mystical Blessing, he was a Loving Man who gave all of himself, yes, he was tired and although this song makes me cry , it's understandable to see and feel his heart ache , as he always said The Myth is One Thing and the Man is another , he said it's hard to live up to an image, you can see the interview of him saying these words when he broke all attendance records at Madison Square Gardens, I am praying that he can see the Love around the World for him , he always thought he would be forgotten , Never in a lifetime and beyond is that going to happen Thank you 🙏 TCB1935 .

He was 42 when he died. But here he is 22 years old. It's 1957. Elvis had that voice..that inclination, that it made you think of Calvary. - "Reverend William Herbert Brewster, Sr.". Most of his gospel songs, including this one, were recorded pretty early in his career. I own some of those original record albums. Have you listened to Peace In The Valley or the many others? beautiful and inspiring! He was raised in a Pentecostal Church and unfortunately got caught up in the worldy system that made him famous, but also used and abused him. His agent just kept driving him until there was nothing left of his life, and he died at age 42.

Elvis was just back to recording after serving in the Army. His mother had passed away when he first went into the service 1958 and he wanted to record gospel to honor her. They sang gospel at home. He attended church with his family. I saw a rare home recording of Elvis singing gospel with his mom and dad. This was his earliest exposure to gospel music. I get goosebumps when I listen to Elvis music. He touches your soul.

Very happy to be seeing more younger people reacting to Elvis' legacy and voice. It is like being spoonfed honey by the angels. This is what I want played at my funeral. Nobody can sing like Elvis. At 1:30 I wasnt expecting his tone to dip and it took my soul with it. You think he sings this at the end of his life, no this was in 1957, he was a baby of 22 whose voice transcended age, colour, genre. He lifts and drops you depending on his delivery. Pls do some reading around the official sources of Elvis first hand information. The fake colonel didn't rip him off, he put a stupid agreement to Elvis and being an uneducated hick and not being business savvy, Elvis took it. He never read the contracts, believing tom was like a father figure rather than a degenerate gambling A hole. Apart from blues artists, and stale frank sinatra type artists NOBODY knew how to manage someone like Elvis when he burst onto the scene. He blazed an untrodden path blindly. Maybe if Tom had the heart to say "I'm too old to travel the world with you, go with my blessing" things may have worked out very differently. By all accounts he was a belligerent and mean individual. That said, Elvis didn't have the self belief and confidence to fire him and stick to it. I love Elvis, every little thing about him, his talent and his body of work but he lacked a backbone and didn't take interest in the business side of things. Jerry Schilling or Joe could've stepped in and done a better job. All Elvis needed was a good team of lawyers to hash out the detaild and to put distance between himself and the fake colonel. Elvis never knew that he was illegally living in the US. The recent film added that in and the on stage scene of Elvis firing him publicly. Either way, Elvis held onto him for fear of losing what tom parker DID do for Elvis, his job was Promoter, not manager. Ultimately only Elvis could decide and only he could save himself. He was too keen on getting wasted and letting his dad deal with finances and correspondence and too interested in messing around with as many women as he could get. Sadly, tom & Priscilla both bled him dry and put additional strain on his output for leeching more money out of him. His talent and stature unmatched to this day. He was THE FIRST MEGASTAR, evwryone else followed him. We realise now he was a musical genius, his voice today cannot be autotuned because he used it perfectly. His style was unique and so he remains timeless and therefore relevant today. "That echo will never die", literally. Man was off the charts 🔥🔥🔥 in every way. He is missed, and went to his grave thinking he would be forgotten. The pressure of being Elvis (the image) was too much. Long live the King ❤

This song was recorded in 1957, some twenty years before he died. It was before he was drafted and served his tour in Germany. He had a versatile voice that could portray deep sadness (Love Me Tender) as well as playful fun (Jailhouse Rock), but it seems his favorite Genre was Gospel, and he performed it with the reverence and solemnity it deserved. Elvis was a bit of a financial trainwreck, and it can be argued that Colonel Tom Parker kept him from fading away.

Elvis recorded this song very early in his career, on January 13, 1957. Less than a week after his 22nd Birthday. Which would have been on January 8. I can see how you may have thought it was near the end of his life though, because the lyrics of this song, describe exactly where he would be 20 years later, when he passed at the young age of only 42.
