I recently went budget Bass shopping and found an acoustic-electric fretless u-bass for like 100 USD. Of course I purchased it and its probably my favorite instrument now. I have yet to upgrade to round wounds but it sounds transcendental. Fretless bass is from heaven.

That's a familiarity thing and is pretty well known. That's why club owners like cover bands - it takes a few listens before most people get into a song, but if it's something they already know then they automatically like it (unless it's horrible, of course). If you heard Charles' music from time to time like you do the songs he covers, then you'd probably like his stuff just as well.
