First of all, so called "Jean-Claude Van Damme" isn't his real name. There was nothing wrong with his actual birth name of Jean-Claude Camille Francois Van Varenberg, other than the fact that it's too long, has an unnecessary hyphen, and two female names. Mostly likely the change was made as the result of a greedy Studio or Business Manager, with perceived notions of greater recognition accompanied with monetary gains? In reality, it's also shows blatant disrespect for one's parents & their family heritage, just to possibly obtain (not earn) a greater buck?! The ONLY reason a name change should be done, is for a woman when she gets married. If a woman gets married and DOESN'T change her name, then she doesn't accept the sanctity of marriage. As far as hyphenated names go, first of all, they're unnecessary. Secondly, they're ESPECIALLY ludicrous for a male! Furthermore, teaching someone how to be violent. Isn't there enough violence in the world already?!

Jean Claude himseld fecided to go with Van Damme instead of Van Varenberg, as it felt it was more impactful. Van Damme is a common surname in Belgium. And Van Damme is the surname of a close friend of his back home. Jamie Foxx is not a real name. Neither is Michael Keaton.
