Head outside sumi-gaeshi is ILLEGAL in IBJJF comps and it is also very dangerous to practice with a partner if you don't know what you are doing. There is a good chance of a neck injury if the thrower (tori) pulls the victim (uke) onto his head. I have seen this injury before in judo practice by one of the assholes at the gym to a newbie. Sumi-gaeshi is a very effective throw, but to be careful and not cause serious injury to a friend/training partner, make sure your victim's (uke's) head is below your chest/abdomen and not outside.

Matt, I sometimes see this throw as Obi Tori Gaeshi (I was taught as a Sumi). Is OTG a subset of Sumi Gaeshi? Your other Sumi Gaeshi video has the opponents head on the inside (near your chest) instead of in your armpit. I'm a BJJ instructor, so just want to use the proper names. Great Videos! Thanks

Isn't this a foul regarding to ibjjf rules in rulebook Nr 24: Grabbing opponents belt and throwing opponent on his head while defending single leg with opponents head outside.???

I am pretty sure it is legal if done properly. Reading the rule it states explicitly 'throwing opponent on his head'. This happens if you attempt the sumi gaeshi without the entry step (getting right under them), since there is too much distance and the opponent ends up having their head spiked into the ground. You should be under enough so your over-arm makes the opponent do a forward roll. At least that is what I gather - I am just a white belt still so take it with a grain of salt.

@@ianaustin1867 Maybe you are right, but you can't control how your opponent is going to fall. I think it's risky. Similar to inside ashi garami vs Knee reap. Depending on the referee and opponents reaction you might get DQed pretty quick

@@dunkel11 knee reaping is a baseless fear, it's like being affraid of an armbar because you keep hyperextending your arm to escape. If you you go against the pressure, yeah, you will hurt yourself if knee reaped but that is completely on your on the instruction you have received

I had someone do this to me when i was going for a take down and instead of throwing me they just slammed all their weight into the top of my head and neck. It's honestly the most scary and painful moment of my bjj life, it didn't help that the guy was a god damn giant 6-6 easy 220 pounds. Any suggestions to prevent that happening? It's fair enough if it's illegal in IBJJF, whatever i'm not worried about that. I'm more worried that if it happens a second time that's it with BJJ i don't think my neck can take it. My thought was keep better posture, but i don't know.. is it just a case of not going for it.

@@sethb6383 i believe its more dangerous in bjj and wrestling, since we don't train as judokas to expect that move and tuck the head down. There might be some bad moves in the heat of the sparring/competitive fight that can lead to injury. Specially when you use sumi gaeshi as a single leg defence. To keep your opponent safe, you do sumi gaeshi if his/hers head is on the inside of your body. If not u go for the guillotine lock, its even easier and more effective. Most important, it keeps your opponent from potential harm, if he doesnt tuck his head he might land on it :/

I don't believe this is barred in IBJJF at all. There's very little rules on takedowns or grips there, unlike IJF.
