I really like how this guy has his channel organised and that hi is the only car reviewer who show an actual chart with the vehicle he is reviewing and where it sits in comparison to others in that segment. He does a clear job of dissecting the differences between them too and I think he deserves more recognition.

@Der Schwindel lol, people like what they like. Tbh I was thinking the same thing as I watched this video, but I also think the G80 is “complete”. This is going to be the model they move forward with, mostly unchanged for 5-7 years until they release the next generation. The G90 and G70 were “draft models”. The G70 is being dramatically refreshed after just 2 years. It’s going to be way better, and I think they will do the same with the G90. The first iterations were just to make sure they got the overall formula right, before they went all-in and released models. Let’s wait and see.

@Der Schwindel welll, the G90 will undergo an extensive redesign next year. It is due to receive all the technologies of the G80 and GV80, and many more. If the g80 redesign looks and Is this good, imagine how the flagship g90 will be when it gets redesigned. Reportedly the next gen g90 will receive air suspension and a multi LiDAR system to support level 3 autonomous driving. I would wait for the 2022 G90, it will likely be the best vehicle Genesis will ever make.

The Genesis lineup is starting to really drop luxury. Their really going with an older approach to design and beauty on the outside, and on the inside it look absolutely phenomenal. The materials choice is great and the “omission” of the passenger seat having the same range is nothing new. My 15 CLS63S was 120k new and the passenger seat doesn’t have the same range. My car also has plastics on the side even though it has stitched leather and carbon fiber everywhere. I think Genesis is doing a great job of luring away customers from other traditional luxury brands.

I had a choice, BMW M340i or Genesis G70. I've got G70 3.3TT AWD top Prestige package. For the same options I would pay $12K-$15K more if I decide to buy BMW. I don't care what beige is on the hood. I would like to drive high performance and comfortable car for reasonable money Genesis gave me that pleasure. Even if in some fields BMW is on top of Genesis, I don't believe that small superiority cost more then $10K.

Thank you Genesis for being one of the only automakers other than Tesla that actually wants to be creative and original (albeit in a different way than Tesla). @Der Schwindel Yes, I completely agree. Lincoln’s another great, unique player in the luxury space. Love that they’re giving us a modern interpretation of traditional American luxury. Handle well enough but sportiness be damned! Comfort first! And I’ve heard about the Mazda developments, and I actually think they’ll be in more of a tweener, luxury-but-not-quite-tier-one kind of position in the market. That’s a historically difficult place for automakers to put themselves, but I actually think Mazda will be able to pull it off if they do it right. We’ll see, though.

@@devn3813 I disagree. what makes a car a luxury car is it's tech and build quality. Even the cheapest G80 has that luxury car build quality, and I've heard good things about how quiet it is as well as how it rides. You don't need to max out a car for it to be a luxury car either, and doing so in the G80 is mostly just getting you more tech + a better engine. I should also add that this car is much cheaper than it's rivals, especially when equipped with tech. This is absolutely a luxury car, as was the first gen Hyundai Genesis Sedan (I drove and almost bought one).

My 2015 Genesis (G80's predecessor) has the same features, minus the fancy dash screen (like heated/cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, fancy sound system, power rear window shade, manual rear side windows shades, panoramic moonroof, power adjustable steering wheel, memory seats, and all the safety features as well). I can see that they made it look fancier now, it has been over 5 years since then, but the prices crept up proportionately as well. I'll wait a couple of years and get one of these coming off of a lease, if not the G70. Genesis is doing great things (an EV is coming after 2023 as well), which will be tempting as well! Also, Alex's reviews are the most comprehensive and informative, keep it up!

So nex yr Nov I will be in a 2021 G80 sport V6 all will drive 375 hp. I drove GS Lexus since 2000. Let me honest the G80 knocked the GS into Lexus not even making them anymore. The GS is discontinued. Believe me I went for a GS in 2018. They tried to get me in a LS that has the same engine as my G80. Negative. My dealer whom I've been dealing with since 2000 told me man go buy that G80. So there. Lexus is a great car. With my opinion like I said I was driving GS. I had 5 of them in almost 20 yrs. G80 is that car or I may go for that GV80. They jus need dealers. I had my problems dealing with these hyundia showroom dealers. Lexus is still number one in my opinion with customer satisfaction. I have family members who drive Mercedes n Beamers n jags etc. They say brother Lexus is number 1 in Customer Satisfaction. Genisis rocks. GV80 is tempting. Time will tell. Life happens..

The G80 doesn't offer rear folding seats because in other markets like Korea, that space is designed for electrically adjustable rear seats, which the Germans don't even offer in this class. It's the same reason with the Lexus ES. G80 is also a much bigger car than the A6/5-Series/E-Class, the wheelbase alone is the same length as an 8 Series Gran Coupe. The cabin space is also the largest in the segment. It needs more structural rigidity to maintain that large size, which helps if the seats don't fold down.

A business that others are abandoning is often the easiest kind to enter with some success, as long as you do not expect much profit in your definition of success. Luxury sedans are a shrinking segment in many markets, so you need to be among the strongest incumbents, be leveraging products for another large market where you have an advantage or show up with something seen as having a "shiny new toy" factor.

@DavekayBSC 4 жыл бұрын
@Der Schwindel If you're selling in the ~$50K+ range with a car that's about 195" long, you're competing in this class. The RL\RLX was never very good, but it was an attempt to try and compete in the same way that the Volvo S80 was. Their transverse/FWD setup doesn't put them in a different class of car. The ES and GS were targeted at different customers. The ES competes with cars like the now defunct Lincoln MKZ, and the Infiniti I35 when it still existed. The ES is a luxury package Camry, same as the MKZ and Infiniti. The Germans don't make those. The IS is their attempt to compete with what the Germans do make, and I wouldn't be surprised if they ultimately quit that segment as well. The "new" IS is a strong indicator that they do not care about remaining competitive with BMW 3 and M-B C, and are just re-heating an ancient product since all of the tooling is paid for. The fact is that nobody really wants a sports sedan from Lexus. They aren't good at making them, which is why they have given up.

It's rare to have a rwd based sedan with fold down seats. You need bracing back there to counteract the twisting forces of the engine torque. Especially when you have near 400ft/lbs

I am loving the new Genesis design. The only thing I dislike is the lack of fog lights. Which seems to be a trend...not a fan. I get that a good majority of drivers don't use them, but they should lol I'm also impressed with the amount of power out of that 2.5. Overall great job Genesis!

From what I've gathered. The Lexus ES 350 has lower NVH than the G80 in all trim levels and engine options. I'd say the material quality on the top spec trim ES and G80 are pretty even. Nothing can beat the ES for ride quality comfort and softness.

What set up do you use to test cabin noise decibels? I noticed all your decibel readings are higher than what the manufacturers and even other reviewers claim. This seems to be across the board, so I'm just a little puzzled. Thank you for the great work and great reviews!!

I never got how he gets his decibel measurements? A iphone or a dedicated measuring tool. I just use his measurement pool as a reference. Seems the 2020 K900 is the quietest car he's measured. Seems like all new cars/cuv/truck/suv with new models with focus on NVH at any price point come in around 68.5DB to 72DB at 50mph.

I'd definitely pick the G80 over an e class or 5 series, and certainly over a discontinued/abandoned GS, but I'm disappointed that they shifted their entire engine lineup downmarket. Infotainment and UX in general - minus the admittedly attractive rotary shifter - seems much better thought out than Lexus and most if not all of the German designs. The "basic" cluster is alright but certainly shows the failings of any LCD cluster in comparison to a physical dial. Power figures are well and good, but torque to weight and the torque range are more important. And for $56,600 I'd strongly consider a smaller, lighter, spec'd out refresh Giulia i4 or an even-more-spec'd-out RAM with even more torque and air suspension.

Very thorough review, it takes a lot of talking to cover all these features. It's this or the E Class and I think I prefer the G80. I simply don't like the option list exceptions on the MB even though I would be spending less on options with an MB. List price difference would only be 3 or 4 grand equipped with similar options with a few exceptions. For most, the MB would be the preferred choice with that great name recognition and they're willing to deal. However, I've never been much of a follower. Being a brand new vehicle that has to be ordered, I'm a bit concerned about the deal. It's going to depend on the dealer as to how much they want to get G80's out on the road.

Considering the sport sedan head of development for Kia/Hyundai is from BMW, it is not surprising that Alex found that the engine is tilted just like at BMW. He just brought over his trade secrets from BMW and has instituted many of them at Kia and Hyundai. Appreciate this review, for my next car in a few years maybe this is the one I will get.
