My daughter spent 16 years in and out of the hospital and we had the opportunity to help train many nurses. One of Emily’s biggest things is “never ask if it isn’t actually an option” ie. don’t say “can I take your bp?” Say instead “I need to take your bp”

I also learned this works best with ALL kids. Don't ask if no is not really an option. And if you want a decision only give two options instead of open questions.

Having worked with children with special needs for 40 + years in Colorado, there has been many changes, years ago I worked at a school that was preschool to age 21, all special needs students, we had a therapy pool, a registered nurse, a sensory room, a "home" set up to learn hygiene and house keeping skills, cooking, cleaning etc., higher functioning students were able to run for head boy/girl, have prom, participate in sports, we had cheer team, the older students went out on work crews, I think integration is important, but these students wouldn't have the same opportunities in a "regular education" school, it was a sad day when the school closed. those were some of my most enjoyable years working with children/teens with special needs.

why did it ever get shut down? Are there more? How do I create this?
@happycook6737
@happycook6737 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBonyLevi The "Least Restrictive Environment" part of special education law was interpreted that ALL children have a right to be in the general education classroom. 20 years ago I did a student teaching in a special school. A family was furious their child wasn't in a general education classroom. The family sued. In the gened classroom their daughter screamed, head banged on desk/wall, bit herself and others, pulled clumps of hair out of her own head and others...It was truly terrible for the autistic child and classmates. Those parents sued to keep their kid in that general education classroom. I think the law should be interpreted to be what is in the best interest of keeping the child safe, comfortable, and learning. It may or may not be a gened classroom. As a result of militant parents, most of which were in severe denial about the severity level of their child's impairment, more and more kids are dumped into general education classrooms. Without constant ABA, restrictive environment, and high staff to student ratio most moderate to severe autistics will not make progress. This must start when they are very little. The most heartbreaking cases are severe autistics who were physically managed for compliance. Very hard to physically make a 220pound 6foot tall 11th grader do anything. Must ABA train from toddler hood. Such a shame we closed down most special schools.

This is the first time I have ever commented on a KZbin video, but you guys have truly inspired me to go into working with individuals with special needs specifically Autism. You & Cilla are rockstars. Someone like myself who has 0 experience working with individuals who have Autism other than 1 distant family member, I didn’t think it was possible to go into this line of work not having the right certifications or degrees (I went to school for Event Management with a minor in communication.) After not working for over a year due to the pandemic, I found a job as a Developmental Specialist at a day program that’s funded by the state for adults who have autism just like you were talking about in your video. The ages range from 22-50 & I always think about how Abbie would thrive at a program like this when she gets older. We work closely with the BCBA’s at the program & create a plan with each individual on which goals each individual need to work on to be able to possibly live independently in the future. We do laundry, bathroom needs, go on outings in the community, cooking group, problem solving skills, danger awareness etc. I have a total of 4 individuals in my class & two are non verbal. You would not believe how many tips and tricks I use on a daily basis that I learned from your videos!! Some of my individuals in my class live in a group home, so being able to see Abbie thriving at home with you guys is truly a blessing & awesome to see. My life has truly changed for the better since I’ve now found the job I was meant to do in life! I look forward to all your videos & thanks for being such an inspiration to all your 600,000 followers!😁

This type of community integrated, job/vocational heavy, life-skill development training is what I do as a teacher. No academics (aside from periodic lessons on social skills, self-advocacy, disability rights, and workplace communication) and real-world internship experience. My students are (generally speaking) slightly more independent by the time they join my program, but verbal communication/expression is not required. Basically, I am very interested in how this next chapter goes.

My aunt who is 70 she is mentally disabled but her mental age is of a young child. As an adult she had therapists, social workers and what not. They would come to her and teach her basic life skills. Then she would go to this place called the heritage center and teacher working skills and they helped her get a job at the mall. Now she lives alone in her own house which was my grandparents and can take care of herself. My parents live next door to her as well as her older sister just in case she needs any help.

Guys, what you are describing with vocational training, which is a Transfer program objective. But, she has to graduate. Are you thinking more like homeschooling for her senior year? My brother went through his transfer program after graduating high school through our local community college. Our Regional Center set us up with it. He graduated from the community college at the age of 22. He has Autism, but is verbal. Although it was a vocational program, he still got to say that he “graduated from college”.

I’m interested in seeing how this plays out. Please keep us apprised of how this goes and please focus on keeping it generalized and not specifically a Florida thing so that those of us elsewhere can get the basic ideas to build our own programs. My autistic/IDD son turns 18 three weeks from today and I’m so nervous because we’re not ready. He’s in school but he has never been able to do well in a classroom setting at all. It’s just been too stressful for him going all the way back to preschool and he’s done absolutely everything he can do to get out of it. I’ve been trying to find ways to see about getting him into a community-based life/vocational skills curriculum but to my frustration even the intellectual disability community has pushed for classroom based schooling of some type. Now that he will be an “adult” I’d much rather he have some sort of “internship” with a shadow who specializes in ABA so that he can do things like shop for groceries, go swimming at the YMCA, cook and clean, maybe even some sort of “job” in delivery where can get all the vehicle rides he wants. So yeah, I think this is a good thing and I think we need to see not only the day to day activities but an ongoing “real talk” explanation of what’s going on and what the at least immediate goals are. PS: I would approach the extended family about seeing if she can “help” them somehow - like helping with laundry and housekeeping at their residences. Not to sound pessimistic but as the grandparents age they’re going to need help too. I think it would be mutually beneficial to them and Abbie to interact in a more collaborative/supportive way with social events like family get together being the reward for all. IME these more “informal” ABA applications are more group oriented anyway and are almost more for training those who support the person with special needs than actually training just the person with special needs.

The learning of life skills will be forever implemented and constant maintenance. Worked on cooking brunch today with my older brother and it didn’t take well as the other times we did it before, but he was just coming out of a stressful situation where his anxiety was really heighten so his Receptive communication was off. 😕 but he did enjoy using an hand blender for the first time.

I swear after “see you next week” Abb said “fine” (with her hand in a whatever) Abby is a package of sass in all the best ways! I love it how her personality just gets bigger and bigger. The salad 😂

I like the tag-teaming of these parents. The mother is doing the mom thing and the father is very involved, so he is able to lead in strength where needed. Abby seems to recognize the roles of her parents. Dad does seem to be the authority to her. This girl does recognize chain of command

In Abbie's situation I think she would benefit much more being in her home environment. Good decision she's come a long way in the last couple of years. Keep up the good work Abbie I wish you all the best 😃

I love the direction you're going with Abbie's education next year. I am curious if the vocational program you're talking about with a professional implementing it will be through JSA or through someone else? I am a middle school special education teacher and in San Diego where I live the school district has a program for students ages 18-21 that is entirely community based. They aren't ever in a classroom. They meet with the staff members who work with them somewhere in the community and they do different recreational activities, shopping, and work at a business somewhere in the community.
