Complaining about my favourite game because that's what I've become. Tekken is extremely fun; easily one of the most satisfying and enjoyable games to play offline with your mates, but struggles to keep up with a lot of other games outside of the genre in other regards. Just a few ideas I thought I'd throw out there into the KZbin void.

This game was a last ditch effort by Bamco to revive the series, which explains the lack of fleshed out content this game has. If it's not due to the great pvp this game has, i doubt Tekken will still be here today. It's too late to put all of these stuff into the game now, but with the success of Tekken7, i believe that Tekken8 or whatever the next installment is going to be called, will be absolutely amazing.
@MrOzzification
@MrOzzification 4 жыл бұрын
One would hope that. But I fear Bamco execs are going to look at T7 & say "wow we pushed out a bare bones game on a slashed budget & still sold millions. Proof we don't need them to be a success". Also I doubt even Bamco knows what made T7 a landmark success. Its a lighting-in-a-bottle phenomenon and no doubt a tough act to follow.
@MrOzzification
@MrOzzification 4 жыл бұрын
@GenesisGems I'm just talking about the game's objective success. It sold over 5 million copies. 3rd best selling Tekken of all time behind T5 and T3. Whatever your opinion is those numbers matter. And on top of that T7 did skyrocket in popularity. Only SFV was doing better numbers in terms of tournament entries and Twitch views. On paper T7 shouldn't have been seeing that kind of success provided it was a bare-bones product with only gameplay as its saving grace. No other fighting game from this gen could get away with that.

Yea, if they don't nickel and dime us. Furthermore, they need to introduce modes that allow new players to learn and grow, or else you're just selling this game to an ever shrinking subset of players who know the game but are succumbing to old age, work life, family responsibilities, etc. They are literally killing their own franchise off if they aren't doing what they can to ensure new generations of players are going to be buying it 25 years from now. The lack of any instruction on the various intricacies of the game is shameful.

as a huge Mortal Kombat fan, borrowing the faction idea is a bad idea. Factions were only in MKX and not Injustice 2 or MK11 because nobody cared about them and it didn't affect anything that mattered. The offline content in MKX and onwards has also just not been as good because the much more unique towers from MK9 and the STAR Labs stuff from Injustice 1 got replaced with randomly generated vs cpu fights with modifiers that arent interesting at all. The Krypt is good, but at the end of the day, nobody playing MK is playing for the Krypt or the towers or anything like that. When I picked up MK9 as a scrub back in the day, it wasnt because of the towers, the krypt, or even really the story mode, it was because Mortal Kombat is awesome and the game looked awesome. Just watch those MK9 trailers, how could you not be hype? I continued to play and improve and the game because it was so awesome and I wanted to be able to beat the nerds online, and NRS was also great enough to actually have a tutorial and stuff on their KZbin to help a scrub such as myself out.

03:29 Tag2 had something like this. It was called World Tekken Federation (yes the acronym really was WTF). You could start or join a sort of guild and represent them & host guild lobbies but Bamco dropped support for this feature quite soon after Tag2's release. In fact Bamco dropped support for Tag2 altogether within a year of its release. Harada cited this was because they hadn't devised a means of monetization for the game post-launch. 04:49 also Tag2 did have an online practice mode. Its a mystery why this was left out from T7.

M4TT YN that’s a good point, but I disagree. I certainly think growth is capped with Vs CPU, but when it comes to learning the basics of a fighting game and practicing the mechanics, real opponents won’t give you the chance or opportunities like a CPU would. So in terms of starting a game with 0 hours, I’d say you can grow from Vs CPU, and robust single player content is what would bring many a lot of players back and possibly convert causals to hardcore. That’s been my experience.

Loved your ideas about viewing top players in replay so we'd have access to the data in real time and could get a firmer handle on the decisions being made. As for the 'learning through doing', I really think that they were attempting to implement some of that concept through the Mishima Saga story mode. Specifically, I think that they were trying to impress upon players the importance of 3D movement and spacing. Sure, they might not have succeeded but it's what I think they were trying to do with all the fireballs and lasers. Then for example the Nina match at the start: I think the point of that was to introduce the idea of creating and punishing whiffs.
@MassiveZug
@MassiveZug 4 жыл бұрын
I think you're absolutely correct that they tried to help teach players in the story mode, I just wonder how they could go about highlighting really important aspects like punishment and stuff more so than they already have. It seems like a difficult but most likely very rewarding problem to solve.

They could easily teach people how to play the game through Tekken Force mode. Introduce new baddies who specifically do certain crucial techniques in the mode to teach you how to attack and decode these techs. Tekken is amazing and I've been playing it well over 20 years but it is very very anti casual or new player to the series.

To be fair to Namco. They did implement a lot of these features back in Tekken Tag 2. They even had a website that would link all your stats, your rank and a bunch of other info. You were able to watch other replays plus your own. You were able to watch matches from different region. Namco really truly put the effort but unfortunately the game didn’t sell as well. If anything we’re lucky to get Tekken 7 at all. This game was basically a last ditch effort to revive the series and they played it safe and to be honest it payed off. That’s why the game was so barebone and they’re just now adding some features. I think Namco did well considering how both T6 and Tag 2 didn’t sale as much as they wanted.

My connection is superb on any other game (literally). All of ur ideas are really good and you've said so much stuff that I've never even thought of that would drastically improve the experience of fighting games. The thing is tho that companies like Bandai namco are probably already making plenty of profit especially with all the paid dlc and season passes that tekken has. So for anything to change, those companies would have to see a significant benefit to players gained and profit by adding these type of features. I think monetisation schemes in games need to become more harshly looked at cause the current fighting game model doesn't seem that fair. So many stuff you have to pay for that you'd think would just be a given like the frame data and the doa6 thing with hair colours. And I don't think the work put in to making tekken bowl justifies having to pay for it as dlc when there's already so much dlc to buy anyway and the base game still released at full price.

My wishlist for tekken 8: -team battle (online and offline) -mokujin -remove the fucking rage arts Rage drives are okay, tho I wouldn't mind them being completely gone. @DIP8ONE
@DIP8ONE 4 жыл бұрын
I truly think at this point in time. Tekken 8 and if not 8 and a spinoff and there could talk a little bit differently. But for the canon entry Tekken 8, has all the chances to either be the worst or the best if series. There are many reasons to my conclusion here. Most important factors for me, we could say in general, are story ( maybe conclusion of the mishima saga ), gameplay ( which would mean, better fluidly, maybe new animations for the first time since the 90's, and probably a better idea to replace rage arts ) and the third factor has to be what you mentioned, content, offline or simgle player non-paid and constantly updated content. Again I agree with everything you said. But the major fighting games on the market each have their core features whic makes you a fan. Street fighter has it's Japanese themed martial arts with godly abilities in a 2d environment. Mk is based on chinese martial arts, certain comic features, but the base theme is extreme violence. Tekken for always had the idea of having many and unique characters with many fighting styles, and learning each of them always felt rewarding when playing especially with friends, story and other content are not on second plane here, but it's just the first aspect that attracts you the most when you see it. That is why Tekken 8 should be the product that uses every other Tekken put into perspective and brought to a whole different level. I am still pissed we didn't get cgi endings for T7. There is much to discuss here and I would love to see a video from you on how could Harada mane the perfect Tekken in the near future, I really enjoyed watching this video as a long standing fan of this series!

A few personal gripes from me regarding Tekken 7 in particular: Netcode. Even on Steam and good internet, the netcode feels inferior to a variety of other online games I have in my arsenal, of course not all fighting games but still, it can be frustrating to go down to a 3 bar despite the connection stating 4-5 bars. I would prefer a Ping System when matchmaking rather than finding out last second. A game that does this well is SKullgirls, which takes into account ping over giving you random 'bars' Extending from that is the permanent input delay which it isn't too bad but there are other games that offer adjustable input delay like Skullgirls based on connection, making even the worst connections acceptable. Sure, it's a 2D fighter, but it was an indie funded game that didn't have a huge company to fully back it. Those are my main gripes and I can go on and on, but you nailed the many highlights that I believe Tekken needs changing.

Its kinda like they want to preserve the old school mentality that everything should be learned through trial and error and that the community should figure it out like they did back in the arcade days. But arcades are few and far between and the majority of people who play the game are playing at home, on the internet. They need to adapt their philosophy as a whole, which they may be doing already. Teaching you about them and where they came from. Casuals will like it because they can practice Tekken game mechanics without being juggled for 15 seconds because they whiffed 1 move. And hardcore players will love the difficulty when the baddies stack up or a boss battle happens! They could dlc some legendary costumes. These could be earnable thu lots of play and gaining high Ranked titles or purchased(casual option) . Survival mode! Absolutely no reason for this to not be here already. NONE! Team battle. Why not? Cosmetics. Why does TTT2 have better cosmetics!? It was on older hardware and had 4 characters on screen! 4 characters could have long hair, yet T7 can't have 2 characters with long hair! Challenge stages like smash bros or SF2 Daily challenges. This could be anything. 3 matches using character X. Win using X move(throw, Rage drive etc)It's like a dare. Could be some temporary prize if you win! Like early access to a skin etc. Tekken is incredible game but so far has refused to simple steps toward perfection (survival mode missing is the biggest sign. That mode has been in almost every Tekken and is simple to add) Tekken Force mode would require the most work but it would gain a massive amount of players! There are tons ppl who love Tekken, its characters, and its mechanics, but they are just not good vs ppl. Take their money and give them an AMAZING experience to. As I veteran player I'd love to the challenge to help a newer player on hard and try to carry him. Talk and teach at the same time. Fun opportunities just waiting for them to add (back)

I wouldn't bother one second of development into tutorial. I do agree a good campaign with focus on adding up skills or knowledge (ie: Enemy only takes damage from juggle, explain basic launcher+combo, let the player play).

It isn't hard at all, but so few fighting games can even come close to doing it right. The "Story" mode should be the entire tutorial. You should be able to choose whichever character you want and begin the story. Each encounter between cutscenes would build on the last, having you learn basic movement, then adding single jabs, some strings, etc. But each step only involves what you have seen to that point. So if you start the Story as Yoshimitsu, your fist encounter is going to be only movement based. Avoiding X amount of attacks by dashing back, sidestepping, etc. Once you pass that, they will introduce some of your jabs. Then you are required to utilize movement to land jabs, maybe interrupt or counter enemies. I don't get what's so hard about it. You could even package the game with "Beginners Story Mode" and "Story Mode". Where beginners is for players who know they need to learn, and will not mind the handholding to understand punishes, whiff baiting, juggle combos, wall carry, etc... and people who know what they're doing can just plow through the story with their main and be on their way.

That idea of spectators joining lobbies and watching pros play on their screen is unlikely to happen as it requires a robust server to manage and distribute the data. But the tekken team in T7 have strongly implied through their design they want very minimal server costs. :/ Maybe if T8 gets a huge budget. Fingers crossed.

These are all very goods that's been kicking around the fgc for decades(since Usenet days,even) but here's the thing. The examples you've shown who do these things(the single player content,the online practice mode,etc) are mainly western companies(sfv being an exception what with the multiplayer being done by Capcom vancouver) and not by Japanese people. It's only been recently that they took a look at freaking roll back netcodr!something that has existed since 2010!! And only because they hired a western guy into the dev team!(zinac) So yeah,unless they hire a foreigner(murry doesn't count,that baby) you gonna hafta wait a hot minute for those things...

Tekken is so unwelcoming to new players. It needs to be more upfront with its combo system like teach people how to really make their own combos. The violet system works or whatever it was called was a step in the right direction but still too messy to really teach people. It needs a massive overhaul. It needs to be beginner friendly like the old tekken and have some kinda social feature that really focuses on the community. Smash has better community features and that’s SMASH like NINTENDO, KNOWN FOR BEING AWFUL WITH ONLINE

Soul Calibur or Virtua Fighter or dead or alive really need to make a better come back than what they're doing because they can implement all of these features. As an added bonus moving them 7s hella easier than Tekken.I think one of the main things boring people from taking is they don't understand what a safe what is unsafe and how to move. And it's not really made obvious by the game.

Great video and a lot of good points. The lack of community features increases the salt and hate for tekken. Everyone knows its a great game but the salt and negativity can be too much for many players. If bandai namco does not improves the community the next tekken will not be a success. Right now they are surfing on the tournament and more content wave but this will stop one day. Tekken is like a sport you are doing and investing a lot of time and all sports have a community but tekken is still in the "arcade" idea trapped. In arcades you have a community to ask. But online a lot of players are alone fighting and rely to steam or forums. They must remove the anonymous mechanics. I almost never play lobby since i want to play and not watch 3 matches to fight again. I am already cold and out of focus after this. Like you said parallel fights should take place and the community must be involved much more. Show streams and highlights inside tekken and allow players to watch other open games. Basically watch any game from everyone since a player is always happy if someone watches him. Social profiles like twich/twitter/youtube should be visible ingame when watching games or playing an opponent. Punishment guide is a new great start to tekken and i hope they continue working on it. It has so much potential but should never reveal all options since this is the magic of tekken. Like when you block jack's throw with a perfect frame block everyone is surprised and tekken lives from surprises. A demo where 2 characters are available for versus play and also online play (maybe limited matches) and 1-2 story chapters will not hurt bandai namco at all but it can reach a bigger audience. My ideas: - tekken ball is a nice way to have casual fun and reduce salt / hate and bring funny moments to players - arenas - remove duplicates and 1-2 endless level - add brighter arenas - sometimes it is so dark you cannot even see the limb of dark character outfits - improve punishment guide by adding throw / tackle escapes - add p2p mode with port forwarding - this is like offline! (if a ps1 emulator epsx for tk3 can do it, bandai namco can also do it) - remove some bugs for high level gaming like floor break after KND trade. Game bugs are the biggest salt for me.
