I did this drive last year. I have a 2017 Toyota Prius. I got 390-415 miles per tank. I filled up no more than 4 times. I have a 11.3 gallon tank, and I paid an average $3/gal, about $37/tank. Hybrid’s just make much more sense, than going full electric to me. More efficient, cheaper, more practical. The cyber truck is a very cool truck. Just not for roadtrips.

Having to stop to charge every 2-3 hours is absolutely brutal. When I am in road trip mode I like to put in as many miles as possible or stop for cool attractions along the way. Not stop at a charging station multiple times a day. I am so disappointed in the range. I know that Elon and a bunch of KZbin Tesla fanboys always say that you need to stop every few hours for a restroom break and something to eat anyway, but I usually just pull off on a dirt road and take a piss and always bring a cooler with drinks and food when I do road trip. This is a huge let down. Not to mention I live in Canada so any winter road trips will be very tough indeed as I can probably only expect to get 150-180 miles of range when it is -30 Celsius. I have a Cybertruck on reservation, but it just will not be practical for me at all. Also not enough charging stations in certain parts of the Country so the range on this would limit where I can travel. I should mention that I am a Tesla shareholder so this is an honest opinion from a shareholder and fan of the company.

This is why I actually think a gasoline range extender is appropriate right now for EV trucks, at least until the battery energy density gets to 2x what it is now (at the same price and weight). A 15 gallon tank and small generator could probably fit in the frunk and it would give it way more range.
@bjlfbs8506
@bjlfbs8506 4 ай бұрын
@@DennisCW I will usually go 6 or more hours without stopping other than a piss break on the side of the road or like I said a stop for a waterfall or some other attraction. But I don't want to be stopping at a charger instead of stopping at those attractions and fitting in both stops will just lengthen the road trip considerably. It really is unfortunate. I wanted to love this truck, but the range is a killer and that range extender that sits in the bed is not practical. I like using my trucks to haul stuff in the bed a few times a year and that range extender is not easily removable. The originally touted 500+ miles for the tri-motor is what intrigued me. I know Teslas never get their EPA estimated range on highway drives so I was thinking it is probably a realistic 400 miles or 250 miles during winter. I could have dealt with that. I just think it is a huge missed opportunity to not have a variation with greater range. Like I said the range extender in the bed is not practical for anyone who wants to actually use the truck as a truck. Lots of people use their truck to tow as well as carry stuff in the bed. It is not one or the other for lots of people. My hope is that they improve the battery cells over time and can get the range up to at least 400 miles.

If you charge to 80%, but only use it till ~15%, that means you gave yourselves access to only 60% of the battery power each lap. You also spent at least 30 mins per stop. That means a lot of time was wasted during stops. It will only be beneficial if I had to do diaper changes for babies, and feed them on a schedule, etc… 😅 As a single guy or childless couple, it would suck, especially if driving through Canada. I've done that round trip in both a 3 and Y. You definitely want to try to arrive at the next charger as low as you dare (5-10%) and only charge what you need to reach the next charger. While charging, look ahead on your route to see where the 250kW options are. Occasionally there is a 250kW near an older 150kW and the navigation might favor the 150kW because it's less busy. There are a few chargers on that route you can skip but for the most part, stopping at all of them is optimal as you avoid the slower part of the charge curve which makes up for the few extra minutes of getting on/off the highway. Overall, it looks like you got about the same range I see on the 3 and Y on that trip with the only significant difference being longer charge times expected for a heavier vehicle with higher consumption and bigger battery. The speed out there is fast so not much you can do to safely drive slower but in a pinch, pulling in tight behind the fastest semi will do wonders for you consumption/range.

As someone who has done over 10 roadtrips with his Tesla, I agree with this 100%. This is the way. I personally speed up my driving until my projected arrival at a Supercharger is between 5-10%. Rinse, wash, repeat between Supercharger stops. Makes the total roadtrip go by much faster

The first time I made a trip along basically that same route in my Subaru Forrester I was pretty conservative on refilling my gas. Meaning I never let my tank get below 1/4 before looking to refill. Granted that was a few years ago but west Texas has some very long and barren stretches where I didn't want to take any chances. That being said I haven't run out of gas for decades and the last time was because my fuel gauge wasn't working and someone else had been driving my truck and left it on empty. As for the speed, going 80 in much of that area is considered slow but watch out for highway patrol. Parking at the charging station, yes with a brand new over $100k+ vehicle I would also be careful and not get too close. Still it wouldn't be a big deal to move over a bit and back up another six inches once you knew there was enough clearance. Also for me I wasn't too concerned about the time for the drive or the charging time as I would be looking to see what kind of good eats, etc were available next to the charging stations, besides I only have a two hour bladder. Four years ago I place my reservation early morning the next day so I know it's going to be quite a while longer before my notification for the Cybertruck, oh well.

I have thought about something other than the numerous charging trips if I switch to the CT and it is more of a concern than range, it is....... how in the heck will I be able to charge the CT with my trailer in tow? I would have to either 1) unhitch (aint gonna happen) each time I charge, or drive parallel to the Tesla charger and hog up 5 empty charging spaces OR, 2) hope for a "pull through" charger which Tesla has very few. I'm screwed if I go through with the CT, I'll think I'm the dumbest dude on the planet to do this to myself.

Considering how a Tesla will always be to the right of the Supercharger (from the unit's point of view) the solution seems obvious to me: with new deployments of the Supercharger units, flip the locations of the cable connection to the unit & the holster for the handle. This can be accomplished by simply turning the unit 180 degrees since there isn't a display screen that faces the user. This way, instead of stretching ACROSS the unit to get to the receptacle, the cable would pivot from what is currently the handle holster side. That should provide enough "extra length" that it won't be a problem to connect. Dennis, feel free to pass this idea on to Elon, just mention that I am the one who brought it up. 😎

I was fortunate enough to view the CT in person at a tesla showroom in BC and have to say - as impressive as it is in photos & videos....it's WAY more cool live in person ! Still loving our model 3 after 5 years of ownership...will add a CT to the stable once the bugs are ironed out and Tesla makes a few upgrades. Thanks !

I think charging times may need improvement through software but that’s just a guess. I am wondering if there’s something going on with the software on these. I don’t know it just seems off compared to what they reported about charge times, but to be fair it could be something to do with the chargers themselvesor combination of both as well as range efficiency not sure if that software or if that’s just the lack of the batteries being able to handle the range. Hope they can figure it out and I hope it’s just a software issue.

OK yes this also proves that it's very low mileage truck. Keep in mind this is with no other cars at the charging stations. So if more of these are on the Rd., having to stay on average 40 min per charge stop will increase to 1h1/2 per stop for your travel. So not a very feasible off-road truck, unless your going to have charging station in the wild where not even gas etc. refueling can be found.

On the first glance just a few things to point out. Temperature was 1 degree Celsius so pretty much freezing temps which is not optimal, the car was using up insanely much power judging by the last trip meters from time to time 900wh/km which is absolutely nuts. In comparison my M3 dual motor does around 180 in freezing temps , 160 in summer. So I bet some flooring or over speeding was the norm here as it was ranging between 300wh and 900wh/km. Also sad to see the infrastructure in the US is still so shit, in Europe you can't drive 50km without hitting a high speed charger and that allows you to always just charge between 5% and 60% ish so you never have to wait the 40 mins + as displayed here between charges. Tbh all in all the stalls were ok, getting 80+kw at 80% battery capacity is nothing to scoff at , M3 has barely 50-60 at that point and that is if I am lucky. So this shows pretty much the worst case scenario.

You really showed the the real life experience with this extremely cool but flawed* vehicle. In order to maximize range you have to go down to really low percentages but then you risk a break down if there is an issue at the planned charging station (less of a Tesla problem). Also you will consume a ton of battery if you move at the pace of traffic which is 70+ out east and 80+ in most of the open spaces elsewhere. Finally the CT suffers from poor charging (charging curve) due to the battery type. Still a super cool video but this thing is best used for regional travel with great charging infrastructure. It will be interesting to see if the $60k version is even worse if it ever actually comes out. I suspect Tesla won't want to give up margin and will continue focusing on the $80k and up CTs given their ability to crank out limited numbers.

Using a mean value of $25/charge, If my math is correct, that equates to what would be about $4.08/gallon with a combustion engine, and a total cost of $375 . Here in Ohio gas is roughly $2.69/gallon.....I don't see the environmental benefit here, since you have to burn excess coal to produce the excess electricity needed. Also, time is money, so the loss of work productivity goes way down as well. If I used my car, and took a rest break every two hours and a fuel break every five hours, I would only lose 100-120 minutes between the 3-4 stops needed, and it should only take me about 19-hours to drive, and would cost me approximately $135🤷🤷🤷

Cybertruck 4680 battery pack seems either very conservatively managed by BMS until Tesla has enough degradation and use data to possibly open up for a more aggressive charging profile. Or possibly we will need to wait for a next gen battery chemistry to be released that offers all the objectives and goals set at battery day over 3 years ago. Higher density would also allow for more kWh in future packs of same size.
