I think the SFAR is a good sign that the market for a small frame 308 is going to expand. Probably because of, not in spite of, its problems. Its cost is so tempting, its compatibility with common AR components means its easy to tinker with, and since most AR owners treat guns like LEGO sets, changing a bunch of parts out is a feature, not a bug. So, I wouldnt be surprised if this sparks a minor aftermarket in fixes for common problems, and maybe down the line an ecosystem for small frame 308s that center on the SFAR, since the DPMS GII fell to Cerberus and the Rogue is priced out of the casual buyer range.

Everyone wants a low cost product that is also a quality build and functions. For example, look at Arken scopes and the huge following they have. SFAR gets the job done at close range because MOA is not a factor. MOA becomes a factor at distance and the complaints go up considerably. Much like the Arken where the build and turrets has high praise but at distance the glass quality comes in to play and the complaints increase. The POF Revolution or DD5 V5 cost more than the SFAR but they perform out of the box and at distance with better components and tighter tolerances. So the debate continues "At what price, are you willing to spend and be happy with the decision?".

The reason why I bought the SFAR was because of price and weight. I had to send mine because of shaving the brass and double feeding on setting 2. Just came back after a fast turn around and tried it a couple of days on setting 3 and while still shaving some of the brass, I saw great improvement after 50 rounds. On setting 2 worked flawless with my handloads. If I start spending money changing all the parts that mentioned, I'll be defeating the purpose of acquiring the SFAR. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I think the Savage MSR-10 is the more optimal size for lighter .308s. Still has a bit more carrier weight, without being a beast like an LR-308/AR-10 BCG. Also has adjustable gas with mechanical advantage.

@@user-jl6hr5ys2j Yes but you get that with any manufacturing company, it's not like that's unique to Ruger. I bought a sig 516 rifle, and I had to send that in for work to get done when it was having an issue. My Smith In Wesson AR22, had safety issues that needed to be recalled. Ruger has had problems, there's not a single gun manufacturer that hasn't had these issues. The real concern, is does the company do what they should to stand behind the product and correct it when needed? in my experience, Smith and Wesson has, Ruger has, and so has sig in my experience, when I've had to have issues fixed. there's not a single manufacturer or company that doesn't have issues like this, whether it's your car manufacturer, or anything else, this happens. They're machines, and sometimes things need to be corrected. there's no such thing as a company that puts out a perfect product, hell, my chevy pickup truck has been more reliable than my Toyota, and yet you hear people always parrot how great toyota's are and they never break down, and I can tell you that's absolutely not true.... my Toyota has had plenty of issues.

Is Ruger willing to handle a warranty issue, sure they are. As a customer though, having to go through the warranty process has additional costs, takes additional time and effort, and puts a stink on the purchase. Ruger isn't the only manufacturer though that's guilty of beta testing it's products on the public by rushing to market with "sort of" works products. In hindsight, I bet a lot of Gen 1 P365 buyers would have much rather waited for Gen 3 model.

I've already drilled out 3 SFAR regulators, thankfully it seems to be a happy middle-ground for sizing, stock port size for #2 is 0.093" and we opened it to 0.098" and that was enough to have it cycling everything. We did find the #1 really only works well with higher back-pressure cans so we also opened it from 0.063" to 0.072". The #3 is 0.112", which is outrageously huge even as an adverse setting for any .308 gas gun.

Im kind of out on Ruger over the last few years. Their QC has been rough at best. I have a first gen PC9 thats been through a boltface, boltface pins, two extractors and still has extraction/feed issues. Its been back to Ruger and it was worse afterwards. I picked up the SFAR six months ago and I think the nicest thing I can say about it is that its light for a .308 platform. Its been a picky eater and as you mentioned, is over gassed or under. No sweet spot or pet ammo Ive found to get it cycling reliably out of the box. Both are just taking up space in the safe now. If I get a wild hair Ill check out that gas block.

I think Hop does an excellent job on this page and puts these rifles through a proper performance review. I trust his advice and rely on videos he puts out to make decisions. That being said, I have the 20” barrel of the SFAR and have had none of the same issues with reliability that he’s experiencing. I’ve now put 750+ 7.62x51 M80 Ball down range (don’t price that out please 😂) and can’t remember experiencing a single misfire or chambering issue. I have not even cleaned the rifle yet and performance has been exceptional for me. I’m actually frustrated that poor Hop has had to deal with these issues because I know how smoothly the gun has run for me. I’ve even considered purchasing the 16.1” version of this bc I would configure it much differently than the 20”. The 20” rifle is still completely stock config from Ruger, I’ve added scopes / fore grip / bipod accessories but have not altered any of the mechanical aspects of the rifle. It seems that the use of a suppressor on this rifle may interfere with proper gas release. I feel for you Hop, keep up the good work.

I guess I've been lucky. I took mine through the break in period with 200 rds of LC ball ammo, and then some extra ammo a friend gave me:). Zero failures on setting 3. It just worked perfectly. I ran into some lock back issues when I made some ammo for it that was a little to spicy. I dialed the powder back, and got exactly what I want for a Vmax 110gr bullet with exterminator. No failures yet.... If I have any issues I guess I could just change the gas block since Ruger is giving new revised ones away.

They’re easy to adjust and work really well. Downsides are handguard compatibility (they are not low profile), weight (it’s heavy and pretty far out on the barrel) and price.

I have the 20” version and have put an ambi charging handle, Magpul angled foregrip, padded sling, Leupold VX3HD scope and a PSA single stage match trigger. I set it up for deer hunting. Had some issues early on but now is working flawlessly. It will group 3/4” at 100 yards with Federal Fusion 166 gr bullets. It will do 1” with Federal Premium 150 gr Nosler Partitions. Other hunting ammos I tried opened up beyond that. Absolutely love the rifle but did not get a chance at a deer this season so will have to wait another year.

The lesson people should be taking away from these videos and others is the juice to squeeze ratio on .308/6.5cm platforms is abysmal. These things quickly turn into money pits. Assuming you think these might have merit as a DMR of sorts you have to ask yourself “what is this platform affording me over a dedicated 6arc rifle or upper?” The answer is very little IMO.

Oddly, I snapped together a PSA ar 10 not long ago for around the same price. 20" barrel, and a heavy pig, but no failures to feed or eject at all in over 500 rounds. Likes 180 grain bullets for accuracy (standard 147s were all over the place) and it beat the hell out of a cheaper scope mount ( replaced, and an expensive lesson in scope mount quality there. I learn everything gt he hard way...) The small frame 308 is intriguing, admittedly, but I don't think anyone has ot dialed in yet.....unlike the ar 10 size frames.

Been on the range with my buddies canned SFAR, the thing is still loud,and you ain't sneaking up on anybody. After shooting a full mag, my friend looks like a coal miner from all that gas backing up in his face. I have one, and it operates great using good ammo with heavier cartridges. Pretty sure Ruger never imagined this weapon as a stealth sniper. Pretty sure they wanted to offer a light weight platform for sending .308 rounds down range. I decided to trade noisy for reliability, and even if I don't look and sound like an "operator", those 21 match grade rounds are still gonna hurt

Great video. Surprised to hear of so many gas issues but I believe it. Nice call on that new gas block. Only issues I had reliability wise was suppressed, so tuned a load for that. Accuracy wise, it's 308. Tested 6 or 7 different factory options... 7.62 ammo ranged from 2 to 3 MOA... 308 ammo was far better and was able to get consistent 1 MOA groups and no problem shooting the gun out to 750 yards. Just picked up the 6.5 CM and REALLY looking forward to stretching it out there.

Even if it's over gassed-- it shouldn't rip the casing on extraction like that. Chris at SAS has a very good hour long video on buffers and buffer weights. Your issue is that it was trying to extract too soon, so the chamber still has very high pressure as the bolt is already trying to move. This is likely because the bolt is so light weight. So what you can do is add an H2 or even H3 buffer: what this does is add more inertia to the BCG and it will delay the acceleration of the bolt for just a slight moment which allows the projectile to have more time to exit the barrel, which will drastically drop the pressure in the chamber and that will keep the casing from getting stuck... The problem is TIMING-- not necessarily over gassed, but just that the bolt is too light. A heavier buffer would at least stop the casing from sticking to the chamber walls... You can get a 3 pack of tungsten weights from brnells for twenty-five dollen and just swap them in the buffer you have. Even though you already "fixed it" -- I would still do this anyway. It should keep you out of that window of high chamber pressure: to the point that it should never rip a case again, no matter what setting you are on.
@K-bob_45
@K-bob_45 10 ай бұрын
I’m pretty certain Bartocci said the buffer weight was tied directly to the barrel contour and was a way to reduce bolt bounce more than anything. At one point I had a S&W AR that would rip case rims off. Did it with CAR and H3 buffer alike.
@jonathansmith7306

That doesn't make sense. The bolt's weight does not matter, it is locked in place until the gas system unlocks it.

Hmmmmm this seems to be a common issue with these super “affordable” AR10 factory rifles. I started to kick myself in the A$$ because I spent a good chunk of money on my Aero build. All good quality parts on mine Krieger bolt and barrel, Geissele, Magpul, JP just to toss out some of the names I invested in. But then all these rifles started to hit the market over the last couple years. Making me believe I wasted my money apparently I didn’t because my rifle does cycle and it does it reliably with sub MOA groups. My build was a carbon copy of Johnnys reloading bench rifle. And with his load development my rifle shoots just as good.

@@UpliftyourbrothersIf you're going that route, you might as well just assemble a build. You're missing the point that a factory rifle ought to be reliable out of the box and not require modifications such as tuning the gas system. Let's face it, this Ruger is junk.

@@Enjoyer.762 I’ve had zero malfunctions. But your right, they need to have worked out all the bugs for all the builds. I agree it’s unacceptable, but it’s also a good idea to know how to tune a gas AR rifle. It’s like a dirt bike that has a carb not jetted correctly from the factory. Sucks if you don’t know how to rejet, not a big deal if you do.

As fellow riflespeed advocate and customer I have some charging handle and recoil reducing advice. I recently put together a build utilizing the riflespeed gas system and paired it with a tubbs flatwire rifle length buffer spring, kynshot 5007 9mm hydraulic buffer, and an a5 length buffer tube from dark hour defense, and an Armageddon tactical gms-15 evo charging handle. I believe dark hour defense is a sister company or has a tie of some sort to v seven as it looks identical to the other v seven buffers I've bought in the past. The rub is the buffer and flatwire spring is a bitch to get in and out, probably a retainer out there that alleviates this, but it functions better than I dreamed it would have with recoil mitigation. The charging handle has a section of rubber that seals to the top of the lower receiver which came out almost immediately but even without that I have zero gas coming back getting into my face so I don't really care. I may try to add something back in its place but for now I'm happy with it. The hydraulic buffer gave me pause at first as I have several issues with them years ago leaking, but comparing them side by side it looks like they've had multiple revisions and upgrades since the old ones and with about 420 rounds of various ammunition types through it so far I've had zero issues, making it about 300 rounds longer than the old ones I had previously, ymmv. Hope this info finds you well.
