All of these are available for good prices on AliExpress right now so I've decided to treat myself - kept changing my mind throughout the video but it's hard to beat the value of the R36S when it's the cheapest of the 4 yet also has the power to do a good amount of N64 and PSP, for which the sticks will be a useful addition. I don't like how cheap and flimsy it looks but I don't think any of these are really built to last, hopefully the market continues to grow and we'll be upgrading to something even better at a similar price point within the next couple of years.

Onion OS is the game-changer for me, the ease of shutdown saves, etc.. Software really matters. I may enjoy fiddling at first but at the end of the day the more seamless experience is better, especially in handhelds that are pocketable / all about convenience.

I would agree that if you look at these handhelds from a software experience alone, Onion OS is well ahead of the rest. The other ones have good and serviceable options, but Onion really gives an experience like a AAA device.

The RG35XX has GarlicOS which is directly modeled after OnionOS. I don't have a Miyoo so I'm not sure what the feature comparison is like, but GarlicOS is also a fantastic and seamless experience

About the RG35XX +, one thing first: do NOT order the ambernic case, it's just bigger than it needs to be - actually the miyoo mini plus case is a near perfect fit (and much cheaper). The 35xx+ dpad feels slightly smaller than the MM+'s, but still quite comfortable - I like the texture (the perfect handheld dpad would be for me similar to the MM+'s, with the texture of the retroid pocket 2+). The device itself is definitely more comfortable than the MM+ for games using the shoulder buttons (been testing some F-Zero). Quite happy with this new purchase, and eagerly looking forward to future garlic OSs updates - once it's as convenient as the miyoo with onion, the bump in power will be a joy.

@@MyAmazingUsername and the stock software is the best among the machines i own (rg35xx, rg35xx, rg353v, r36s). PSP works amazing and has built-in Amiga support (although it is still somehow slow - only A500, not A1200). For me, it has also the best d-pad out of all of them. On most devices i default to using analog if it has it, (including nintendo switch controllers) but here DPAD is the king.

You're right about the Miyoo Mini Plus' d-pad and buttons. They're so comfortable, I can play almost anything with little to no struggle. The only time I may have a bit of difficulty is with a few fighting games, but that's only a small gripe. Also, as someone with big hands, I'm surprised how my hands adjusted to the Miyoo Mini Plus' size. I'm happy to say that I have no buyer's remorse in making it my first retro handheld.

@@Lucrei. I can’t compare with the RG35XX+, but I can compare it to the R36S. The buttons on the Miyoo Mini+ feel a lot more comfortable compared to the R36S. Taki Udon said it best in the interview; the other devices’ buttons don’t feel as good as the Miyoo Mini+’s, and that goes a long way. Also, Onion OS is a big deal-maker; it makes saving games a lot smoother.

After months diving into the portable scene I ended up with RG35XX Plus. Love the size, the power, battery and its starting to get better with the the custom OS. I discovered that I like to play on my bed after a day of work and the vertical body fits me really well! I recommend to use with a silicone case, it really helps with grip and ergonomics for those with larger hands. My runner up is for sure Miyoo Mini Plus, the true MVP of the bunch with a software that no other can reach till late 2024.

1 Thing you didn't mention, which noone ever does and is really important to me. Time between the on button being pressed and being back into game via the latest savestate and how fast does it shutdown. For this the miyoo mini (and +) running onion is superb because if you're playing and turn it off it makes a savestate, and shuts down in less than 3 seconds and turning on takes 7 second and it boots directly back into game using that save state. For a handheld thats small enough to vanish in your pocket so i can carry permanently on me and use to fill in those little boring gaps in life like bus stops or waiting in line to get a coffee is incredibly important for it if you ask me, The other point is how fast can you change game to one you were playing b4 or recently and again, with the most recent savestate booted its fantastic too. To go back and forth between 2 games takes less than 2 seconds and for any recent game up for the last 20 odd is 3 to a few seconds as you just open the menu and select which all happens super quick. I'd really like to know how other handhelds stack up to that :-)

I have the original 35xx and I bought an r36s for a friend and after setting it up, it's really hard not to order one for myself. I think the build quality and buttons are better on the 35xx, but the 36s is just the exact right size for my hands and I personally like the way the screen and bezel looks. For $40 the 36s is really just a crazy value.

This is one of THE most useful videos I've watched on these. It's great of you to mention "no one is rejecting displays because the colours are off" warning us about the QA at this price point. Also I had no idea the Myoo Mini Plus was so dark compared to the others. Another video said the opposite - that the Myoo Mini Plus was slightly brighter and richer than the RG35XX Plus... but in both his and your video, I can clearly see the Myoo's display is darker, so not sure why he said that...

Well - with a rebate code on Temu I got 3 of the R36S for $78 including shipping a while back. Had had the RG35XX Plus already... And frankly - I'm grabbing one of the R36S consoles every time! Especially when I'm "going out" I always grab one of these and so does my son - instead of our more expensive handhelds. It's PRETTY much the same experience, and the few "less good" things about them actually doesn't really matter much. With the price I've payed for them we don't need to be overly careful about them - Like I kinda do with my Odin 2... The fact that you can generally get about 10 R36S at the non-discounted price for 1 Odin 2 - sorta just makes the Odin 2 look like a bit of a waste for 80% of the time. The Odin 2 kicks their butt on the more demanding games though - no taking ANYTHING away from it because that console ROCKS pretty damn hard - just - for anyone not looking to spend like $400 - the R36S is an INSANELY good value - and especially the PS1 emulation is done very well on it IMO.

After all this time a little info about performance at 17:10 on miyoo mini plus (Onion OS): If you use gpsp core to run the gb/gba games, the Fast Forward will can go up to almost 500 fps on the counting (330 on the same Pokemon game), faster than the 233+ fps the RG35XX Plus can do (This not counting the Plus using the same core).

It's funny that you considered that the software experience is unimportant. Personally, I considered that performance is actual unimportant at this price point. All of these systems aren't going to be good for anything that require more power (N64, PSP, DS, etc.) anyway due to the lack of joysticks (except the R36S) and touchscreen. And in this form factor, the most important aspect is how good the system is as a pocketable pick-up and play handheld. That's why the Miyoo Mini Plus got so popular. It's because of the Onion OS. It's just quick and easy to pick up and continue playing. imo, people who are looking for more power should just save their money and buy a more expensive handheld like the Retroid Pocket 3+ or RG505 (or RG405). They will have a much better experience with those devices. Wanting to play more demanding systems at this price point is just asking for headaches and buyer remorse.

No matter the question asked⁉️ Okay I'm joking/being sarcastic with the last part but Software > Hardware (in this special case/instance) Unbelievable handheld, best buttons, best screen, unreal experience, just on a different level. What works on it works well, and it works better than the others, plus if you u have Onion or Koriki which I use the experience is just incomparable 😊 With Koriki 1.4 every system has a overlay perfectly catered/tweaked for each & every system, so perfect, the games just look & play better than anything else, even the Steam Deck Oled! Best to try for yourself, don't let any of these videos sway you 😊 So yh if you have other more powerful handhelds that you use to play the more powerful systems then the Miyoo Mini is the one 😊

As for PS1 performance I guarantee you that the ePSXe emulator in the expert section in Onion plays PS1 better than any of them! Don't believe me try it, test it, enjoy! It's my favourite way to play PS1 games especially those that don't require triggers, it looks & plays the better than many other more powerful handhelds. I use the scanlines option (hidden gem like the standalone emulator itself) and I turn up the scanline brightness setting to about 75), there are 2 filters (eagle2x,scale2x), all this is subjective but when it comes to gameplay experience it's undeniable, unmatched. Remember no GPU + being underpowered etc.. Learn how to use the settings It's easy Next make a few changes Double the resolution + the hack on Audio interpolation I use Gaussian But simple is fine too No frame skip for most titles For more powerful games Use Auto Frame skip This frameskip is different Works differently It works smoothly Like many of these reviewers I got the 35xx plus early to test, it's nice but I still prefer the Miyoo. I have all them all, I test many.

7:50 sometimes the size of the console matters based on the size of your hands. I got big hands and small devices don't do it for me as my thumbs will get "locked" and tire out. It's not a one-size-fits-all for everyone so choose wisely.

I feel like you should have covered how easily these fit in your pocket, I think most people who want a portable emulator care about how easy it is to take this with you. Also it’s worth noting that if you want the most powerful device for portable emulation those tend to come in the horizontal form factor. Not in a vertical one like these.

If I was purchasing one of these to fulfill the needs of an EDC pocketable device, I would go with the Miyoo Mini Plus. It's as tiny as I'd ever want to go, the software is mature and rock solid, there's wifi for RetroAchievements, and it's cheap. There's nothing extraneous that adds to the size or price like the R36S's analog sticks or RG35XX Plus's extra power.

R36S is really the best budget handheld I've ever purchased. The ARK OS inside really easy to navigate me through it. Also runs Kingdom Heart smoothly on the PSP which is my all time favorite game. That said, I still love to see more new ones on this budget price in the future.

Honorable mention to the SF2000 for being so damn cheap and still being a decent experience. But, yeah, the R36S is the value champ, for sure. I'm really enjoying playing some old GB/GBC gems I missed out on as a kid.

As a completed newbie I understood how this stuff worked, I have all old consoles from GB up top PS2, and if I travel I don’t want to ruin my precious Pikachu Edition GBA or something but still like to play these games, so sorry Nintendo it’s gone be the miyue mini plus or the rg35xx plus, now I need to get to know how the OS running and pick what I’m the most comfortable with, I not have the biggest hands, so I won’t have problem with the miyuu mini plus. Thank you very much again, I bet you saved me hours of research in 20 minutes, but ngl old Gameboys run at like 30 fps, so I don’t need 60+ fps for that, I just care for the smooth handling and buttons 😁

Got the Miyoo Mini Plus and I’m really happy with it. But if I had watched this video before, I would definitely buy the RG35XX Plus because of the HDMI and Bluetooth support. How sick it would be to play Pokémon games on your retro handheld, and then later on continue on your save by just pluging the same device to the TV and play from the couch.

i bought miyoo mini plus for like 46 dollars from ali express in sale and im happy with it, my main games are GBA and SNES, little bit arcade. But if i would choose i would choose 35xx plus now because it has wifi bluetooth and it is the latest thing but it is costly it is like 70 dollars without shipping from ali express, which is expensive .

@@Wvsolo12 pretty good, buttons aren’t too stiff. Shoulder buttons are a little loud but I expected that. There are some performance issues with N64 but again that was expected. The community around this device seems pretty strong so I’m pleased.

I'm honestly expecting the next wave of handheld emulators to all have sticks like the R36S, I'm slightly confused why the RG35XX doesn't have them, especially since the whole point of these devices is the convenience of being able to play a majority of supported games fully without having to jump extra hoops, wich include having to connect controllers. A good friend of mine which showed interest in these his whole standpoint was that the fact he was interested in a handheld what would be able to emulate up to N64 if not more and be able to play those games without having to break the bank and having to connect a controller.

I got a R36s when I ordered a rg35xx from the data frog store on Ali Express. I kept it since I didn't feel like shipping it back out for return and waiting nearly a moth again but god are the buttons awful. Ended up buying a Miyoo Mini Plus a week later for $40 from black Friday deals. Now I'm just waiting for it to arrive and hopefully I get what I ordered this time. Good side about the the r36s though I'll say is the retroarch like experience which I'm used to from the retroid pocket 3 and the screen. The screen outshines my Retroid pocket 3 which came with shitty screen burn in.

Have you tried Taki`s tips to try to make the buttons better? Unscrewing the board a little to improve the dpad and breaking the thing connecting the action buttons to improve them.

In that case, you are describing what I was talking about in this video. The Miyoo Mini Plus has the best DPAD from that point of view with the RG35XX Plus behind it. The only way to improve the R36S DPAD further would be if someone did a 3D printed revision for it with smoother edges.

First bought the white r36 as my first retro handheld, had alot of fun with it mostly played alot of Gba, then sold it and later bought a black r36s. Didnt play it at all and later sold it. Now i bought a miyoo mini plus and i think its the best of them all. You can say it has worse power but the UI makes it so much more inviting to play on it. R36s is like the nintendo switch theme and miyoo mini is like the 3ds theme costumization

4:33 - A stiff d-pad would be a deal breaker, and that's why the MMP is the best among the 4, I mean, if you don't mind the fact that it only runs games up to PS1 level.

I strongly prefer the simpler, more compact devices without the twin sticks. I’m fine mapping the stick to the d-pad.

There are some games that requiere both analog control and d-pad or will be completely unplayable, like Ape Escape on PS1. There are devices that have no analog sticks but bluetooth (for external controller support), but imho playing with an external controller is best on a bigger screen and doesn't suit this type of form factor. Some of these do support HDMI output tho, so in those cases it's an acceptable compromise if you want to play those kinds of games.

Thank you for this video, it's very good. But boy, please make it easier for the viewer to differentiate these systems! They all look so similar and you are constantly changing the order you put these systems on the table. I always had to concentrate really hard to understand which model is which. I get that you were always ranking them from worst to best, but it made it SO difficult for me. And then you even changed the complete shell and thus looks of the RG35XX in the middle of the video without a single word! It would really help if you would stay more consistent throughout the video or put labels on the handhelds.

For me personally, for PS1 downwards, I much prefer my Miyoo Mini than all of these. I only really want to pick up and play in situations like waiting for a train, or travelling. If I want to actually game, I’m gonna want something with a bit more grunt, and comfort, with dual sticks (Retroid pocket 3+, and soon 4). I’d love to get a Steam Deck for emulation, but that’s one chunky boy to take out. Out of these I love the build quality of the Miyoo, and I’d probably go for the most comfortable/longest battery in the end. Great video.

I have anbernic rg 35xxsp and r36s, they both run n64 the same. Have some shades issues and graphical artefacts, soo you should buy more powerful console to run those game well

I have the RG35XX and it's been great. I would upgrade to the RG35XX+ if it had sticks. The extra power and the range of games it can play would need sticks to make the upgrade worth it for me.

Exactly. Because of that I bought Rgb30. Yeah it's 1:1 aspect ratio but with 4:3 games it's 3.5 inch. I paid 15 dollars more.

You don't need a stick for any n64 game except smash. You don't need it for most dreamcast games.

just got R36S and I totally love it, just few cons: - Led Light is too bright to play at night => we can fix by overlay it by a ducktape. - Button is not quite great but still playable - Joystick is not quite great for fighting/fast pacing game like as KOF, SS Overall it's king in the PP.
