I can only recommend to anyone to look up whatever match you can find of him. You can't find as much as for Messi of course but you can still find a good amount of matches and plenty of highlights, as well as every full game of the 1970 WC. I think any true football fan should at least try to get an understanding of how this man played

You never truly understood but you could. Have you ever seen Messi playing in real life? Probably not. Most people do not. Yet, everyone agrees on Messi's undoubtedly talent. There are enough videos and historical documents to back up Pelé's career. He has done everything, sombreros, nutmegs any football player could do nowadays. He was fast, strong, could shoot with both legs, could jump as high as Cristiano Ronaldo, and it was an excellent header. He scored many free-kick goals. His goal-scoring ratio against European teams is way higher than his goal-scoring ratio against South American teams. He won every championship he disputed. He scored over 1000+ official goals; the official FIFA calendar started to count from 2002 onwards, so everyone prior to that needs to lose half of their career simply because they decided to create a calendar only in 2002? Eh, no. Just imagine the best of this generation, Lionel Messi, with 800 goals scored when the best of the last generation had 1282 goals, this wouldn't be good for today's marketing, so they needed to come up with something to downgrade Pelé on behalf of their salaries... Go and watch Pelé's videos. You will see how incredibly fast he was with the ball and you will feel astonished at how much dribbling capability he had. And when you find those unknowledgeable people who say he played against farmers, remind them this is a lie, a historical lie, and remind them Messi played the 2018 World Cup winning Iceland 1-0 with Iceland's goalkeeper being a film director (way worse and weaker than a farmer, right}) and coach being a dentist :) - not to mention teams from Egypt and other sides of the globe who fight European countries in the "Mundial" and yes, they have a 2nd career, and yes Messi and Cristiano played against people and collected goals against them many times. And... As I once read, a grandpa told his grandson: child if Pelé played against farmers by any chance, the possibility of him being a farmer is high. Meaning that Pelé didn't have the training we have nowadays, biometry, science, diet, and medical advancement, Meaning he would undoubtedly be a better player nowadays than he was back then. Anyway, watch Pelé's videos and see how superior he was with the ball.

The first time I heard this man's name was, surprisingly, in my local club's trophy room during a discussion of the history of our club. They mentioned that we had won 2 league titles in the 70s, and then said "Pelé once played against us at our own stadium. Never forget that when you step on that pitch, you are literally walking in the steps of the greatest of all time".

I just wanted to add something As a Brazilian and a Santos fan, I want to say: Pele didn’t need to go to Europe, if you check Brazils national team, every single player was from brazilian clubs and they were favourites for like 4 world cups in a row! And Pele played a lot of matches against teams in Europe, like Millan, Benfica and many others If he played in Europe, he would probably been good, but the difference between Brazil leagues and European leagues (at the time) was not that big! The video is awesome. Love your videos And thanks for reading! 🤍🖤🔟🤴🏿 This is the man how made the number 10 be a big thing in football Forever the King

Popularized the sport around the world, including Europe, youngest to score in a World Cup final, turned the 10 into the MVP's number, a war stopped to see him play, has a better G+A/game than modern players in a period in which the sport was way more violent and directly influenced in the implementation of cards in football. The biggest disparity in the history of the beautiful game. Rest in peace, Edson Arantes do Nascimento.
@matheusorth5365
@matheusorth5365 Жыл бұрын
@@wesbyEric I'm talking about the disparity in relation to the players around him at the time. He was way faster, way stronger and mastered everything an attacking player could in terms of technique at the time. His records against european teams are incredible, only against spanish teams he averages less goals than matches. We cannot count most goals in Europe's national leagues, since teams that exceed nationally struggle immensely in the CL, whereas in South America the best measure is Brazil's national league, even the state competition that Pelé played has more giant teams than Spain for example. They've got 4 continental winners, and at least 20 national titles distributed among them, which in Europe one team alone manages to have. The record in Brazil is 11 if I'm not mistaken. Those 4 compete for the national title once every 4 or 5 years. In the CL Messi loses in assists to Neymar, Messi having twice the number of matches but only 8 assists more. In the national team is when he falls short, although winning the World Cup. Facing the same opponents and having a way lower goal average than Pelé, who scored a hat-trick in a World Cup semi-final against France at 17, scored two goals in a final at 17, and the 4-1 against Italy in 70 would turn into a 1-0 to Italy if you delete Pelé from the match. Messi used to play against slower defenders and midfielders, in a tactical system that all teams around him couldn't grasp, had the 3 best spanish midfielders in the history of the sport to support him, the best manager in the world in a farmer's league that a big team like Atletico Madrid has to birth an anvil in order to fight for second place. Comparison requires both contexts to be taken into consideration. Every player in 1970's brazillian squad played in a brazillian team, facing Pelé in most play-offs both nationally and in state. Pelé had a top speed only 2km away from Mbappé's, ran 100 meters in 11 seconds at 35, 30 per cent slower heart rate, better perypheral vision, jumped 48 inches off the ground and had fundamentals not as sharp as players from today. He would adapt, physically, tactically, technically to today's football, and would most likelly be faster, stronger, jump higher and have better fundamentals due to today's training technology. It is highly unlikely that he wouldn't be the best today. Had everyone seen both Messi and Pelé in their times there wouldn't be a comparison. Pelé had an influence in football that no other player has had and will probably never have. That's the disparity I'm talking about.

He was a bit before my time so I’ve only got Maradona, Zidane (yeah, I said it) and Messi as the GOATs of my time. But from the archive films I’ve seen of him, I get the sense that my elders were right about Pele because it appears the man could do just about everything all the greats of my time could do: Amazing dribbling, free kicks, headed goals. He could jump as high as Ronaldo, run as fast as the best Ronaldo (the Brazilian one that is), had the tricks of Ronaldinho, the speed of thought of Cruyff and the self belief of Beckenbaur. That move he pulled on the Uruguayan goalkeeper in 1970 is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen on a football pitch…and I wasn’t even born!!! To put it bluntly, I’m not going to argue with the oldies on this one.

There's a fact not as well known but that I feel like summarizes everything. In 1958, with the world cup yet to be played, a newspaper article written by Nelson Rodrigues (the greatest brazilian playwright) describes Pelé (then still a 17 year old, playing only for Santos) as the king, as a player that walked through the pitch with the grace of royalty. He was seen in such high regard even before his greatness was shown to the world.

The end of the video really paints the perfect picture, there are probably better dribblers out there, better goal scorers, all of that and probably better all round players but while players like Messi, Eusebio, Maradona are all mesmeric football players, Pele is the only player who could be described as the essence of football itself. He pioneered so many things, did Cruyff turns before even Cruyff did it, rabonas in huge games, he did it all before all the players now, he is football itself

To me growing up in Australia where football was big but never focused on ,except for us immigrants, I always heard the name Pele talked about with an almost reverence even from the older generation of Slavic Europeans I grew up around. Not to bring the GOAT debate up (excluding Messi and CR7), but Maradona was never spoken about as highly and held in as high regard. Having never seen him play, watching this video makes me think to the future and the way we are to think about Messi and Ronaldo and how we are going to talk about them to our kids and grandkids the way ours talked about Pele. Thanks for the video Tinashe, you absolute legend

There's a documentary of his career, all the plays we have of him recorded and even a few 3D made plays out of the description and radio recordings Pelé is untouchable when it comes to football, he's amazing, he played when the game was far less polished and much more physical, he was fouled much more than any other player ever, he played before we had all the technology that allows Messi and Christiano Ronaldo to play at this unimaginable level at 34+ years old, he played before soccer boots were designed to help players run and dash and change directions, he played when the game was just a game, and he made it become art. He changed the world perception of football. To me he's the undisputed Greatest Of All Time. Messi, Christiano, Maradona and all others were great on their own merits but they haven´t changed the worlds perception of soccer like Pelé did. Also none of them have 3 world cups on their own so

If we want to take into account all time which is from 1950-onwards where almost every league was professional, then he is certainly the best footballer ever. As Gary said, his career seems mythical and in order to get others like Messi or CR7 you have to judge them on a curve. Just Michael Jordan in basketball. When you talk about the all the aspects of football, whether as a defender, midfielder or striker, Pele was already a master of them by 17 and was an absolute phenomenon. People disrespect his career because of ignorance and idolatry towards today's players, again kind of like Jordan.

Some of the best testimonies of Pele's greatness came from his fiercest rivals - the Argentinians. There were Argentinian players like Ossie Ardiles, who played against Pele and who also played with Maradona: "Even as an Argentinian Pele is my favourite player of all time." Or Alfredo Di Stefano, the late Argentinian-born star for Real Madrid: "The best player ever? Pele. (Lionel) Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are both great players with specific qualities, but Pele was better." And even the great Maradona himself, when he was still playing, had this to say when a reporter asked him who was better, him or Pele: "No, no, Maradona is Maradona, Pele was the greatest, I'm just a normal player... I don't try to emulate Pele, everybody knows he was the greatest ever."

Its no question , some people transend their sport to become the very image of greatness. Pele ,Maradona and Messi are the very image when someone talks about this sport. Pele was that 60 years ago , Maradona was that 30 years ago and today it is Messi . Every 30 years an exeptional is born and even tho there are MANY greats , R9,CR7,Croyf, Platini, Iniesta,Zidane ,Beckenbawer, Gerg Muler etc etc etc there are only 3 that are MORE than human but icons for Brazil , Argentina and the football world. Pele, Messi ,Maradona .... and the rest 3:40 Just as a referance to how much the sport has evolved Messi gets 250 shirts made every time Argentina play to give to the opposing team, coaches,staff,brands etc.

I think Muhammad Ali and Pele have great similarities. They are not so much players as mythical figures who changed the world beyond the sport. Though advancements in the sports may mean that they would win today and while perhaps another athlete such as ray robinson or Messi had more accomplished within the sport (although maybe not as they had accomplishments on the same level), there was an impact they had that transcended the sport and the title of the greatest that they had was because they were themselves legend, not just legendary.

If he’s the “Original GOAT” shouldn’t he be THE GOAT? Unless there are many Greatest of All Time which wouldn’t make sense.

There’s a difference between best of all time and greatest of all time. Messi for me without a doubt is the best player the world has ever seen… but greatness… well Pelé’s greatness is unquestionable. People who have never watched or talked about football know Pelé. Greatness.

Imagine being Messi. Compared to Maradonna for the WC because he is from Argentina. Compared to Cruyff for the most impactful player because he was played for Barcelona. Compared to CR7 for the best player in the world because they both played at the same generation. Also i just found out that he probably being compared to Pele because that fictional Balon D'Or. Dude being compared to the WHOLE generation. Still probably better than all of them as individuals

Pelé wasn't the first black superstar though. It was Leonidas da Silva. And IMO he was an even better dribbler than Pelé. Here's what Leonidas said about Pelé: "I was a star, but Pelé is a genius".
