@DakotaFord5928 ай бұрын
This one and only sin deep. I think I like this one the best because there is nothing supernatural. Just human actions. Decisions that take place that lead to other things. I sometimes wonder if Joyce.. lol the character would have gone on to do other things. In the modeling world. This is a very well written episode and it's nice to speculate.
@luceatlux70874 ай бұрын
I always thought there was a bit of illustration regarding something deeper too (alluding to the "It's what's inside what counts" theme). It may have been cautioning against taking a path meant for another. Ie, There may be a reason that someone undeserving APPEARS to be getting his/her way in life. It may be a path ultimately meant for only this person towards destruction... akin to the selling of one's soul to The Devil. In theory, the reason 'They' would give over the world to someone when he/she sells out is because the individual is no longer living a real life anymore. Everything is made easy and there's no more polishing of any soul by the genuine trials of reality. Reality is shortcircuited for this individual and a cushy slide downwards [to Hell] is given to them. It harkens back to all those MANY references to it in media such as, for random instance, "Love in an Elevator. Living it up while I'm going down," etc. All of the real path one is living is sold for pure comfort and ultimate success. There is a lot of talk about Tom and his judgments and how unusual it seemed that Helen would get the job... suggesting that perhaps Tom specifically looked for a certain type, a braindead loose girl rather than a strong female soul; someone society might be fine without and someone who perhaps deserved whatever... "She's the one. Make sure she GETS IT!!!" It sounded like there might have been some truth to Helen's accusations in regards to all those jobs the other girl swooped in and got. There might be a reason someone is on a certain route and everything may not be what it seems.

For 26 years I've remembered this episode. Specifically, the host singing so professionally, and the weird expression on the closest onlookers, face. The lyrics, and closest onlooker is what caused me to come back to fill in the gaps. Strangely enough it gives the impression of a clandestine setting. But, I guess I just like the macabre- Edgar Allen Poe, H.P.Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, etc. The way that stuff was glowing in the syringe, I thought it was cesium-137. . But, in such quantity, she would've started losing her hair, and bleeding through her epidermal pores within the hour. So darn it! What was it?!

You know what I find interesting is that believe it or not the ending is based on an actual crime spree practiced by non-other than the medical professional going back to Victorian England and elsewhere in Europe. Doctors would actually pay money for fresh corpses for medical experiments or just medical studies. Sometimes they were just freshly dead and sometimes, look up HH Holmes and his schemes, they were freshly killed murder victims sold so that the killers would make a profit off of their victims. If it sounds sickening, I can't blame you but I guess when it comes to the criminal underworld never underestimate what lengths someone will go to to make a buck. When it comes to scientists never assume they are all good apples and that just because they are doctors doesn't mean there aren't at least a few that have a lucrative side business.

@revacohen2 жыл бұрын
True, but her roommate was no saint, either. It couldn't be a coincidence that she would steal Helen's parts when Helen was about to be cast: something had to have happened behind the scenes. And she was about to cheat her way to winning a beauty pageant. But in the end, Helen really was worse.
@annegriswold21162 жыл бұрын
@@revacohen Helen got it worse in the comic than the tv show. Probably because you can only show so much on tv. Its the same up to a point, though the beauty pageant is a ruse, and she thinks something is off since there is no press, or anything like that. They know she's not Joyce the roommate, but that doesn't matter as she's led to a black market, and torn apart by multiple men for various parts. The comic noting the various whirs of machines and slicing knives, given this took place in the I think in the 30s or 40s. So yeah, she suffered and there wasn't much if anything to be found by the authorities. Joyce died the same way, if your interested, Helen was a bit more remorseful she killed her, but still took what she thought was a good part anyways since both were trying to find work in the comic.
@writer46m723 ай бұрын
@@annegriswold2116 Old post, I know, but thanks for the clarifying the part of the motive. I kept wondering why they did all this to the victims. It couldn't be just "for show" for a bunch of "normal" looking people. There had to be more to it.
@annegriswold21163 ай бұрын
@@writer46m72 As I mentioned the TV show changed some things, but left some of it the same. The TV show gives a little bit of a hint something is amiss while the comic gives a major hints from the get go. Joyce saying she's going to be 'Miss corpse of 1954.' Helen is confused at the name. Joyce goes on to say it is held by the Undertaker and Embalmers association, insisting its just a publicity gag and there would be newspaper coverage, why it could even mean Hollywood. The beauty pagent does take place, Helen wins but notices there is no flashes of cameras so where is this newspaper coverage. She believes when she's told that will come later on during the awards ceremony. The address she is given is in slums, a noticeably run down building with no signs of cars though she still goes in. She's then led down into a dark dank smelly cellar by George. Mr. Boxer the one who gave Joyce the note is the publicity guy, he even shows up in the comic later to clarify he knows that something is up and Helen shouldn't have bothered taking her place. The organization is a secretive one, think black market and they use the beauty contest among other ideas get their hands on foolish desperate women. Poor foolish Helen being told that the Miss corpse of 1954 must actually be a corpse. It leaves it off there with her being backed into a corner multiple men having various equipment closing in on her with the comic noting the sounds of the equipment as she's about to be torn apart with little to nothing left to be found. So yeah her end in the comic is far, far more violent.
