Friendly advice. When visiting the Balkan countries contact anyone who would love to join you to take you out for a food tour. You will enjoy it more. I am from Macedonia but every Balkan country that you visit will find the same friendly people who are proud to show you around :)

An interesting thing about the Tomato being called Paradajz sounding similar to Paradise that you pointed out. Apparently, since the fruit in the Adam and Eve story in wasnt originally an apple, some speculate it could have been some sort of grape or even a Tomato.

It seems that Hungarians called it "Garden of Heaven Apple", hence "Paradajz" and "Rajčica". I'm not sure how people that wrote Adam and Eve story would know about tomato, as it didn't exist in the Middle East at that time.

In Bosnia, people only refer to the meat-filled burek as burek, while the burek with cheese or mushrooms would just be called cheese or mushroom pie. In Serbia, we have a much more liberal definition for burek, and sometimes you can even find burek filled with pizza toppings (although around this point is where even some people in Serbia start shaking their heads). Funnily enough, I've seen Serbs and Bosniaks argue about this more passionately than about the war. Selling burek with mushrooms as the "Sarajevan burek" is basically an affront to God to your average Bosnian
