@@2msvalkyrie529 What I didn’t like about Belgrade is the nightlife. Everyone says it’s great, but it’s not. The scene is filled with criminals with bad attitudes, sitting at VIP tables, and gold digger girls trying to latch onto them. There’s no spontaneity. Nobody's dancing to actually have fun and relax. The nightlife feels primitive, with criminals glaring at people and girls with identical pumped-up lips-everyone looks the same. They’re all dressed like turbo-folk clichés, just trying to attract the criminals. Where are the real people who just want to have fun with friends? It feels like ninety percent of the clubs, bars, and cafes are like that. There’s no urban or artistic vibe, and if there is, it’s maybe in one percent of the places. On top of that, there’s no metro in Belgrade, making it a nightmare to drive. It doesn’t feel like a true metropolitan city without a metro system.

@@Leonidas_Papadakis I've been in both Belgrade and Athens. I think Athens sucked and I don't recognize your description of Belgrade at all. Have you actually been there for real? Because you sound like you are describing a stereotype, which is bot reality. The only thing that sucks with BG is the heavy smoking, the remains of communism (brutalism) and perhaps grafitti.
@Leonidas_Papadakis

@IwillEndureToTheEnd No, I was in Belgrade and stayed for a couple of days, but I didn’t like it at all. The atmosphere felt off. A lot of the women had pumped lips and strong eyebrows, which made them look like hawkers or folk singers. There were aggressive mafia-type guys in almost every café and splav. It wasn’t relaxed like Greece, where people in Athens sing and dance freely. Instead, it felt snobby and pushy. You’d see guys with expensive cars and nice clothes, but their behavior was really aggressive. The women often behaved like hawkers, trying to find a wealthy man. As a gay man visiting with my partner, we couldn’t be open we didn’t feel safe at all. The city was also incredibly dirty. Every park was full of bottles, and even when we went to nature by the river, there was rubbish everywhere. It seems like people don’t have the habit of using bins and just throw things wherever they want. I really don’t see the appeal of Belgrade.

when it comes to tipping, it's not really as expected from people as in north america. i'd say traditionally it's been more common to round up the bill to the nearest clean number if the difference is less than 10-15%. for instance, if the bill was 800 and you gave 1000, it's completely fine for you to expect 200 as change, so essentially no tip. nobody would be giving you the stink eye for that. but if the bill is 950, you could be seen as cheap if you gave 1000 and sat there expecting 50 back (although i don't think anyone would raise the issue openly). overall, dinar is a small currency and nobody likes doing all that math with four digit numbers, so people tend to round things up

@@TravelsInSpace I'll tell you what I think. The tobacco used for cigarettes here is of the worst quality. It has no nicotine at all. I used to be a smoker so I know. They add some perfume and pack cigarettes in different packages, but they are all same. They put enormous price, excises, taxes and some such. They (government) collect enormous money from cigarettes just like that. It is a completely legal illegal tax and because of that they don't care about restrictions, which would diminish their loot.

Btw, the unlicensed cabs are the ones with just a white sign and number on top. The legit ones usually have an actual name such as Lux, Pink, Beogradski, Gold, Alfa Bell etc… altho even the legit taxis are pretty expensive. I would recommend using public transportation with help of google maps. Its practically free, if a controller comes you just say “srednja škola” if you look below 30 or “izlazim na sledećoj” if older. And im not even joking

Just a note for potential visitors: As of January 1, 2025, the public transportation in Belgrade is free for everyone, including visitors. Of course, we will pay for it via other means - through higher utility bills or from the budget to which we all contribute. But, for tourists it is free. Buses and electric buses, trams, trolley-buses, mini vans, and a limited train system to the outskirts of Belgrade. There is no metro (subway).

If you have trouble pronouncing local names (street names when asking for directions, food menu, shop names etc) use a simple rule. When you see letter J replace it in your head with letter Y or I and you will have way less problems reading or saying what you red. Everything else will be close enough.
@LyraYT
@LyraYT 2 жыл бұрын
As a casual fan of linguistics this pains me a little bit. Its definitely more closer to Y than I, however there is something wrong about “replacing it in your head with another letter”. Its like trying to anglicize serbian pronunciations which is a little bit stupid. Rather, try to put in a bit of effort to learn how the letters are actually pronounced, so if you see “J” pronounce it as “J” because thats what it is
@beograd07
@beograd07 2 жыл бұрын
@@LyraYT Replacing letters in your head so you can get around in a hurry is not anglicizing Serbian or teaching Serbian language. Don't be rigid. This rule would help strangers not only in Serbia but also in Croatia, Bosnia and Monte Negro. Especially in those countries where they have a "jekavica" and "ijekavica" dialect with plenty of J letters in them. But it is more a hand tool to help tourist to travel through these countries when they get stuck and need a local help (when telling taxi driver the address, or asking for a public transport direction or asking for a street direction etc). This simple "tool" is not a permanent language learning tool but a help out tool to appreciate Serbian (and other above mentioned countries) their hospitality and friendliness and make it easier for both parties to interact. You dont have time to learn other countries language rules before visiting and also you dont know which source to turn to. So imagine yourself traveling through Hungary and you are in Budapest and have to ask someone where is Szigetszentmiklós. Can you pronounce this? Will the taxi driver understand you? Or you are driving through Hungary, and your car is broken down at the entrance of the Pilisszentkereszt and you call road assistant for help and have to tell them where you are. You are going to beat your self up why you didn't take time to learn some basics in Hungarian before the trip? There is a trick for Hungarian language too if you know where to look for it. Or I can just tell you here and save you some time. Or maybe Greece? Have you ever travelled through Greece and got stuck there depending of your pronunciation of their written words? And for Y being closer than I it depends what is before and after these letters so if you suggest Y only I have seen them struggling with Y too. That is why I offered both and in that order. At the end anyone who doesn't like this suggestion dont have to use it and can take time and effort to learn how to pronounce these letters in former Yugoslav countries. This is not mandatory.

Bus passes are tricky to get hold of - you won't be able to get them from the kiosks dotted around the city as they say in the guide books. The only place you can get them is at 6, Kneza Mihaila, next to the Belgrade Cultural Centre. Go through the ordinary glass front door, then up the stairs to the second floor. We went there a few weeks ago and they didn't have any 3-day passes, only 1-day (which you can't buy in advance, they have to be used on that day), 7-day or 30-day. They 7-day pass costs 800 dinars.

It's clear that this guide is made for American tourists. Everything is explained very simply, like for a child. And these tips are typical of American IQ. How do I order food via Glovo? Please...... When you go somewhere, go to a restaurant and discover the atmosphere. On foot.

I honestly do NOT feel that you did Belgrade any justice!! I’ve lived here off and on for 4 years, and your “tips” are all super self explanatory except the smoking part… And no Serbians are NOT “happy to help” they actually sincerely frown upon you for only speaking English and not Srpski… However it’s a Slavic thing, AND I agree with THEM! We’re in their country we should speak their language… I hate to give a negative review but you definitely didn’t spend any time on the good parts of Belgrade… Also, Belgrade does NIT represent Serbia as a whole, the rest of the country is quite different … I’d love it if you’d do a 2nd short talking about the difficulties and issues being a non Serbian speaking / non Cyrillic reading person… MAKE SURE UOU HAVE PHOTO TRANSLATOR ON YOUR PHONE AND INTERNET SUCKS generally here but there are many “free WiFi zone” areas especially near bud stops. Also Public Transportation here is TOP NOTCH TAXI’s… Legit or not you don’t get ripped off and you get where you’re going And belgrade/Serbia is mostly dog friendly also!!!

You are absolutely the first and only visitor here who said that internet sucks in Belgrade. Literally everyone is actually surprised how good it is. A lot of vloggers upload their material sitting in cafes and without paying anything for it.

No man we dont have much of black people here. There is very small number of people who came to study here mainly from African countries 😊 Man race crated from Blacks and Serbs would be on some superhuman level stuff 😂

you wont see as many black ppl in serbia like in western europe citys but in belgrade you´ll see alot, i personaly served serbian army in the year 2000 with a black guy whos father came to study from Ghana, if you are concerned about racism, we arent like that, in fact serbias constitution from 1835 was the most progresive in the world at that time, every human who put a step on serbian soil was considered as free man regardles of his race or where he came from, what we hate are colonialists. According to a 8 year Harvard study Serbia is the less racist state in europe. so if you question is if you are save as a black guy in serbia? you definetely are, ppl might stare at you but not in a bad way on the contrary because they are curious and interested

Please tourists, don't complain about smoking, now they are trying to impose a new law to ban it, because tourists complain. And tourists like Serbia because we don't have a lot of those limitations, they can run to from time to time, it will lose its magic if we start imposing all the laws you have, and are used to. But really good video. Hope you enjoyed :)
