I think it was battle of Tra Binh when ROK marines faced a similar situation. NVA surrounding them outnumbering them and the marine didn't have air support, while the NVA had mortars to support their advancing troops. The marines while holding onto certain positions made openings in their post allowed to NVA to advance. When the NVA soldiers 'thought' they made a breakthrough and charged through those openings they were actually led into a trap. Because the troops engaged in close combat, mortars couldn't aid them and the Korean marines more skilled in close combat and bigger in size absolutely tore the NVA apart with knives. The KDA was 24:1 earning the ROK marines a name in that war.

I remember hearing about this years ago. Anyone who understand combat/defense strategies 101, knows that high ground is superior. Whoever thought that this FOB was a good strategy, was an absolute turd. At the very least, there should have been heavily armed sentry guards and snipers, all around the top of those mountains. Having QRF air support and artillery nearby, should have been on day 1. I have to wonder what the value of this base was. If there was a legit reason to keep this FOB, the "leadership" should have done more to secure/support it. Being undermanned, and having air-support 2 hours away, makes it seem like a 2nd lieutenant and a private, that just got out of basic, did the threat assessment and planning for this base. I would bet that there's some high ranking turds, that helped plan this base, that didn't even have to face a little accountability for this screw up. I would even bet that some were promoted, and have a chest full of shiny medals, for their "brave" contributions and sacrifices. The real heroes of war, are general E-6 and down, yet they rarely get recognized for their contributions and sacrifices. It's always the the higher ranks, that sit back with clean boots, sipping on an ice cold drink, that get all of the shiny medals. The military rewards system is mostly a circle jerk. In general, the soldiers that have the most medals on their chest, got those medals, because of lower ranking soldiers sacrifices and bravery, not their own.
@LawAbidingCitizen11721 күн бұрын

It’s a tactic they used with some of forward operating bases in Helmand. The taliban hid in the hills that well that this was the best option in some places. Very dangerous but also very affective at drawing the enemy to you.

The outpost this movie is based on was on top of a hill. When the base was attacked in the mid-2000s, the Taliban video recorded the assault and put it on KZbin. A few weeks later, the video was scrubbed out of the Internet. During the assault, the taliban got into the base and fought hand to hand and absolutely walloped the US soldiers and threw them down the hill.

I am not offcially in the military, but I have a 2 cents to share. First, from my understanding, this outpost was in the worst possible location. Second, afghanistan is called the graveyard of empires because no empire has ever conquered it. For my brothers in arms, when you go to war, in a foreign country, try to learn their way of life. With this information, you will be able to navigate through their land without firing a single shot. But hey, I am just a random guy.

Afghanistan has been conquered MANY times, mostly by Indian empires such as the Maratha Empire or the Sikh Empire to name a few.
@taserrrАй бұрын
Afghanistan has been conquered plenty of times. It has never been held though, but than again, which region has right? Anyway, it's usually not worth the hassle because you're dealing with so many mountains and rough, useless terrain, and for what? The country has nothing to offer, no offense, but it has no natural resources and no real agricultural value. There's a reason 90% of Afghanistan is barely populated.
