Basically, triggers are things that can cause you to have a specific intense emotion (usually related to mental health). It has since lost the severity in its meaning though because of people like this that misuse/ overuse it. For example, I was severely abused as a kid and have PTSD. If I hear someone say that person’s name I can go into a full on panic attack and cannot function adequately. People now tend to use it to say “I immediately feel…. when I experience…”.

As someone who’s been through emotional manipulation for almost my entire life, Trisha using the term “gaslighting” so ignorantly and incorrectly makes me really uncomfortable. She accuses everyone of “gaslighting” her when she’s called out for her immature behavior..

True, but, and I know this doesn't make it better, Trisha is far from the only person to do this. Personally, idk what gaslighting is because it's such an overused term! A lot of the time, I feel like people will use this term synonymously with "lying" because it sounds more powerful. I don't use that word because I know it's both overused and misused, but people who do may just be ... ignorant.

Thank you! This is it! Some people in these comments are even using the term gaslighting to say Trisha is turning around and gaslighting him. It’s like regardless of the argument and who was right or wrong there was no gaslighting occurring so please stop using the term for everything. 🤦‍♀️

@Mari I’ve been in that situation many times as well and if you look through my replies to other comments you’ll see me defending Trisha on this point saying that I genuinely believe they weren’t upset until he kept picking at this issue that they were angry when they explained they weren’t several times. It is, however, not gaslighting as it doesn’t make someone question their sanity it just works to upset and frustrate you. Gaslighting is a much more serious form of manipulation than trying to invalidate someone’s feelings or telling them how they are feeling. So initially just throwing around the term gaslighting is watering down the true meaning of the word. Now when Ethan says they’re upset when they aren’t and then pushes them to the point where they become upset and were to say “see I told you you were mad from the beginning” then that moves towards gaslighting but it is still a little gray.

@Mari I didn’t say it was an abusive situation but that it was a more complex form of manipulation than just saying “You’re mad” “I’m not mad” “Well you’re angry or upset it’s ok to admit that” If that was the case everything would be gaslighting. In the end someone telling you you’re angry and you know you aren’t isn’t going to make you question your sanity or at least it shouldn’t. Again (I know you aren’t and I don’t expect you to because it’s a lot of random comments to look through) if you read my other replies you’ll see that regardless of the argument my stance is just on the term gaslighting. I’m aware that they both did something wrong so you don’t have to reply and tell me the “bottom line”.

I couldn’t agree more, I used to have these same tendencies and it’s so sad. Ethan is no doubt one of the most positive people in her life right now (she’s mentioned it many times before) , he’s been so patient and understanding with her and I feel like she can’t fully accept his friendship without involving self sabotage :(

YES. As someone who used to do this myself because of MY mental illnesses, watching it happen from the outside looking in is so heartbreaking. You’re gonna have bad days and people are gonna trigger you. No one else is responsible for your triggers except yourself. She gets defensive and starts going off and she doesn’t know how to stop which is exactly what I used to do. I hope that when she’s in a better mental state that she can talk to Ethan calmly and clear headed to work it out and acknowledge that she was in the wrong here.
