Talking Back to the Night ~
High above the heat of a summer New York street
An out-of-work musician plays a solo saxophone
He's a preacher and a teacher
And he stands up all alone
Stranded in the dark of a vision in the park
A poet in his madness tries to find another line
And he's losing and he's using
And he says he's doing fine
And they look from such a height
That somehow it's all right
They're talking back to the night
It's all that they can do
Talking back to the night
It's how they make it through
If you listen you can hear them
Their voices draw you near them
They're talking back to the night for you
Something seems to take every dime the man can make
His dream is getting smaller and he wonders where to turn
And he's trying hard to make it
And he's trying not to burn
Woman never minds, pulls the shade and draws the blinds
She takes him in the darkness where the loneliest can feed
She gives him all she has to
And it's no more than he needs
~~~
The amazing talent of Steve Winwood has been reflected by his many years of quailty singing and song writing. At the age of 15 Steve became a member of the Spencer Davis Group, and he co-wrote and recorded "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man" before leaving to form Traffic with Chris Wood, Jim Capaldi and Dave Mason. During the late-1960s, Winwood and Mason became close friends of Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix first heard "All Along the Watchtower" at a party he was invited to by Mason; they recorded the Hendrix version later that night in a London recording studio.
Steve formed Blind Faith in 1969 with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Rick Grech. The band was short-lived, due to Clapton's greater interest in Blind Faith's opening act Delaney & Bonnie & Friends: Clapton left the band after the tour had ended. However, Baker, Winwood and Grech stayed together to form Ginger Baker's Air Force.
With a number of amazing solo albums and wonderful musical relationships including working with: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Eddie Boyd, Otis Spann, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, just to name a few...he continues bringing us wonderful new music. Watch for the release of a new studio album, "Nine Lives," which is scheduled for release on April 29, 2008.
I think few people understand what Steve Winwood accomplished with this album. He wrote most of the music. Then he personally recorded each track and did the mixing. To do ALL of that and turn out a work of this caliber takes EXTRAORDINARY talent. I believe he never got the accolades that he really deserved.
First time I heard this song was when I was 12, the alarm-radio was going off and this song was playing. In the dream of course the song was playing, I was in my room on a sunny day, me and a friend were sorting thru a bunch of papers. The part that stood out in my mind was "He's a preacher and a teacher" This song is awesome and too soon forgotten by radio.
A very dark and underrated song. This is the original version, which has that nice fat analogue synth sound. The re-recording has more of a late-80s rock sound. Both are great.
This track is my favorite in Steve Winwood's catalog. It should have been a much bigger hit. It was released again in 1987 as it was remixed to sound updated, but I still prefer this original version as it sounds more raw, keyboard and synth wise.
Music 101 for remixers who don't get it: if the song's already good, it's harder to do it justice, and don't bother with the redo unless you bring something special. The only substantive change in the "remix" is gated, clumsy snares that were in vogue in the mid-late 80s that were on every track, that a monkey could've done. In this case it only impedes the flow in the original, making it clunky.
@BLUESMANRONCHICAGO Paul McCartney and Les Paul & Mary Ford, but neverthless, it's really impressive, but I still don't think these one musican in the studio, makes for better music. Most of the time, the collaborative process, no matter how contentous, usually produces better and more creative music, assuming you are dealing with musicans of equal talent.
