Just FYI, the Logitech shifter fastening screws on top stay hidden if you push them down and twist clockwise. To bring them back on top, press and twist counter-clockwise.

Understand you very well. There is no other option though... Well, other than the Logitech Driving Force, but that one is a total mystery (in terms of it being worth the money), because the reviews of it are quite contrary from being a waste of money to be worth the price 100%. Go figure... There's definitely a place in the market for a another option it seems in between the Logitech's DF and Thrustmaster's TH8A. Either Logitech ditch the DF and actually MAKE A NEW better shifter (instead of reusing the old model from G27 and sell it as standalone) and sell that in ~£80 range or Thrustmaster makes a cheaper one (what seems very unlikely) in the same £80 otherwise £140 for a stick seems bit too far and £30 way too cheap for regular consumers like me and you.

@@armands3153 if the th8a WAS £80 it would be worth it then, they don't need to make a cheaper shifter they only need to charge people what the shifter they already make is actually worth (at the end of the day its a magnet on a stick with a £2 hall sensor) it is seriously overpriced for what it is. my thrustmaster TMX wheel and 3 pedal set cost less ffs. there is no way anybody at TM could justify the £160 price tag when you look at the sum of its parts compared to other thrustmaster products. there's no way this shifter is more expensive to make than my TMX wheel (sure the tmx is an entry level wheel but it has FAR more materials, far more electronic parts, and far more mechanical parts than their shifter. (and that's not even counting the pedals)

@@ChrisHaye I love mine, it's not realistic, but it's quiet and smooth with easily adjustable tension. It's better than the TH8A but not quite up to the level of a Fanatec, but it can switch between the sequential and h-pattern modes so quickly and is easy to do even in VR.

I've got the TH8A MK1. Great budget shifter that can do H pattern and Sequential, but bloody hell it's loud! The original ones can't be a handbrake either from what I gather, and you can adjust the stiffness of the H pattern.

The thrustmaster th8a comes with a table clamp so that's a bit miss leading and it has threaded holes to mount it to a plate to aluminium profile so

You can use the TH8A as analogue handbrake, it has an option for that in the driver settings. It's a hall sensor, it reads positioning of the stick, so the 90° turning, you've done for the seq. mode, also is usable with the H-plate, then you switch to analogue in gamecontroller settings and you can pull the stick gradually...nothing really "tactile", but it works.^^

You've got the sequential shifting the wrong way round, forward to downshift and backwards to upshift, even says so in the manual for switching the shifter over. You're being pulled into your seat when accelerating and upshifting along with usually braking throwing you forward if downshifting, hence forward press to downshift and rear pull to upshift :)

The TH8A does come with a desk mount and can be used as a analog handbrake. Inside Sim Racing made a video on it 4 years ago, I think it was.

i have been running the g27 with its included shifter for years and years, i think i am nearing the 10 year mark on that piece of kit and it does everything i need from a racing wheel since it has the buttons i need and has a H pattern shifter included in the box. and i'm playing racing sims just for fun and not in a competetive sense so it was right in line with my budget when i bought it for less than $170 on sale. but i have done some real good on the g27, i have been in some tournaments and actually finished fairly decent not too far away from top 10. it works great still and i use it just cause i enjoy racing simulators so it ticks all my boxes

Buy Drivehub from collective Minds, and you'll be able to mix almost any pedals/wheel/handbrake/shifter combo you desire. Products that otherwise aren't compatible with each other. Not only that, but it makes my PC-only Logitech Momo and PS3/PC-only Logitech G25, compatible with PS4 or Xbox One if I actually used one.

Well, the SHH shifter probably won't compete with the Fanatec in terms of feel and quality. But for 100 quid you get flick of a switch flip between sequential and H patter, adjustable resistance, styling options, alternative mounting solutions, swappable plates, 7 plus reverse. I love mine!

Been using my TH8A for about two years now. I have well over 500 hours driving with it and no problems so far. It makes AC a blast. I never switch it to sequential or use it as a handbrake, though, so I couldn't tell you how well those features work.

I run the Logitech shifter , and I’ll tell you how to make it better , 1: change the shifter knob , the knob is too small and the best advise is for a ball shifter but one off a real car , since you can add a adapter on it to make it higher , 2: take off the leather cover completely , over time in 5th gear it’ll get stuck more and well , ruin your race as the leather gets stuck and prevents you from shifting to 5th , 3: get a split transmission adapter like seen on semi trucks for it , only advise for this is if you run truck games or do racing with 6 or more gears , there is in fact a way to make it a split 10 speed since gears 3-6 can be pushed down , it will just take time cutting out holes on here the metal plate is to make it have more options , just like how reverse is 6 but pushed down and locked in , 4: guided pattern , a 3D printed guid pattern that sits over the shifter or a metal one will reduce the sloppyness , as when you shift from 2-3 or from 4-5 you can just slide it dangly across , and this Guid will prevent that , making a solid only X to Y motion. And that’s my Advice for people wanting a good G29 shifter most is free , if anything , tops of $100 or $300 and low as $ 20 to $100 , and is worth it , this advise goes to any new sim racers , new people who want a shifter , and or any new G29 users who want a better shifter but without a new shifter

Logitech used to include the shifter with the G25, G25, & G29 wheels. It even flipped to a sequential shifter by turning a knob. Offering it as an add-on and removing the sequential shifter option is just another sign of how low Logitech has sunk in the past decade.

Whenever I change gears I get this toy-ish plastic feeling but other than that it’s a nice quality shifter for beginners and there’s nothing a few mods won’t fix to make it more realistic. Thrustmaster TH8A shifter can bee used as a handbrake with in it’s main (neutral) axis. This mode also present in it’s software.

I understand your comment regarding the USB adapter for Fanatec’s shifter but I believe in this case it’s the other way around and I respect them a lot for it - they’re choosing to separate out that additional functionality and COST as most people buying this shifter will be buying a Fanatec wheel base as well. The other way would be to include it as you suggest and they then charge EVERYONE an extra $50 rather than just the small amount of people that actually need it. This principle is throughout their product range from offering alternate wheel bases where you don’t have to pay the extra licensing for PlayStation compatibility as well as offering various upgrades and customisation paths rather than forcing people to pay extra for things they may not necessarily want or need. Fanatec basically empower the customer to pay as much or as little as they want for what they actually want to specifically buy.

The TH8A also has resistance dialing, there is a small screw in the hole on the side, you may have to rotate the unit to get to it. Check the manual.

Well for me I’ve learned that you can also do certain modifications to the Logitech shifter such as adding a 3D printed piece that makes the shifting a bit more stiffer than you would have OR having this 12-18shifter mod (if you’re into trucking simulation such as ETS2 & ATS as well). Owned 3 of those, starting with Logitech G27 bundled shifter, TH8A, and now Fanatec. Logitech may have felt better with a better mounting position, but I only had desk back then. TH8A I used with a T500RS and Open Wheeler cockpit from Amazon. Had a great time in Dirt Rally and PSVR on PS4, but sold everything when PS5 came out and it didn't work. Having shifter require a separate connection to the console was a PITA tho, many games would have trouble recognizing it. Fanatec I have had for just a few weeks, liking it so far. Really appreciate being able to switch between H-Pattern and sequential without needing to take screws out, unlike the TH8A.

2:15 You know you can latch the tops of those clamp knobs down to keep them out of the way, right? Once the knobs are tightened up, push down on the top of them and twist about 30° clockwise. Release the pressure and they stay down. The clamps on the G29/920 work the same way.

An additional plus for the TH8A is it can also be used as an analog hand brake. Still have to go through a similar process as H to sequential modes, so wouldn't want to do it often. Reviews of the Sparco shifter says it does better than the TH8A @ both shifting & braking. I have the TH8A & it's a huge jump from paddles for immersion, but harder for me to go fast.

Nice review. I'm personally still happy with my TH8A, although i might buy a Fanatac shifter in case the TH8A dies some day (but it' still working great after about 3 or 4 years). Those sequential shifters look nice, but i really want an h-pattern shifter for classic cars, so they're no option for me.

Yeah, honestly, I've been running the TH8A for years now... and while the Fanatec shifter is definitely better, it's far from life changing. If you swap between SEQ and H a lot, it's a nice upgrade though!

You forgot that the TH8A also can be used as a handbrake. My favorite of the ones I have is the Fanatec SQ 1.5, but only for H pattern, for Sequential both the HE shifter and SHH is way better. And I must say that most bang for the buck imo is the SHH, that are both H pattern and sequential, and also really easy to switch.

A word about the Logitech; I've seen a video on KZbin about modifying it for use in truck simulators; this mod added a "split switch" and a "range switch" using a 3d printed part, and the mod is reversible (doesn't modify/break the shifter's innards). I just thought that, with a different 3d printed part it'd be adaptable to the Thrustmaster as well. See on YT: "HOW TO MAKE 18 SPEED TRUCK SIM SHIFTER FOR LOGITECH" for those interested.

Probably to showcase the shifter better. I'm not too sure but the left side looks pretty close to the wall. Maybe a camera wasn't able to be setup on that side in the same way? Guess the rig could of been moved or something. But that's just my guess.

traditionally shifters are on the right in most racecars - look at the original ford gt - right hand drive and with the stick on the right. plus most race cars are LHD so the shifter would be on the right

In my original comment I was just making the remark that due to us driving on the left of the road in the UK it makes more sense for us to have the gearstick on our left as that is what we have in our day to day road cars. As you mention there are probably decent reasons for doing so in the sim setup.

I'm from UK and drive LHD I sim, partly because that's what majority of cars in sims are and partly because of space I have. Makes VR a bit weird in a RHD car but you get used to it....plus when i hire cars abroad it doesn't feel so unnatural shifting with my right hand

I got the Fanatec as part of their main bundle with wheel, base and pedals, so that was exceptional value (for those wanting an entire rig upgrade at once which was the case with me). It's a very solid shifter.

Just wish they released a 6 speed with reverse on the right. Feels strange to feel the click from 1st to 2nd. The rest if the gears are great. Just feels off center to go to 3rd and 4th a little. Probably psychological due to seeing the 7th gear even though it's positioned on the 5th once u actually shift to it after pushing in.

This video inspired me to get the cheapest option lmaoo. I didn't know you could use the logitech shifter seperately that changes everything. Managed to connect an old wheel to use its pedals as a clutch alongside my DFGT so hopefully I'll finally get to experience manual gears in a sim

Neat that you managed to add a clutch to the DFGT. But I don't see how you could possibly add a shifter. I mean, I suppose you could add a USB shifter straight to the PC but I have my doubts that the sim would recognize the wheel appropriately and grant you the ability to use the H shifter. However if I'm wrong please enlighten us.

@@Slakass55 I used a g29 shifter with an eBay homemade adapter to usb. In Logitech's driver software it allows you to use multiple devices for a single game. I also had my flight stick mapped to handbrake

@@CheapskateMotorsports Oh I see. Yes, that makes sense, seeing how the software for the DFGT is the same as the G27 (don't quote me on that but they sure are close). I have been enjoying my DFGT greatly but as someone that drives only standard in real life, I truly needed to get a set of pedals with a clutch and a shifter. Easiest way was to retire the DFGT and find a used G27. Which I did last week and am in the process of adapting it to my rig. However the idea of using a joystick for handbrake sounds neat. Any chance you have a link to how you did this? Would be a great addition to the "new" G27

@@Slakass55 no link really, just plug it in and it should work. I use an ancient Logitech Attack 3 so I'm able to use Logitech's software to configure axis settings etc. I'm sure others have been able to mix brands with similar results

Late reply but it makes sense from an environmental point of view not to include it. Most will like you be in the Fanatec eco-system already and the adapter will just end up being unnecessary.

Great video, thanks! I recently upgraded from the G29 shifter to the Fanatec Clubsport and the difference is immense. With the G29 I always worried I might break it mid-race, kept missing shifts etc. For me, having both H and seq was going to be essential so it was really a question of Thrustmaster vs Fanatec. Still using the G29 wheel & pedals though (a less urgent upgrade need for now)

Not a sim, but those shifters at the Wangan Midnight 5-6 Arcade machines take a lot of abuse from unsupervised kids, overweight, fedora-wearing bangshifters almost everday of the week and they rarely break. not to mention they feel notchy, feels solid and sounds really well. is there a shifter on the market that has the same feel as those?

If you want something additional to be included in the box instead of having to buy it separately, expect the product to get more expensive by a similar amount for everyone, also the ones who would throw it away because they don't need it.

Sure, there's a cost involved. But it's nowhere near the cost of selling a separate item (warehousing, packaging, inventory, markup etc). Equally, you only need a separate dongle because they chose to use a non-standard communication protocol. TM did USB over DIN, so you only need a cheep converter cable, which they supply.

@@ChrisHaye because the shifters work differently, the Fanatec one does not have physical buttons for each gear and therefore needs the calibration which is done and saved by the wheel base or the adapter.

I don't know how many times I almost grenaded the engine in the Lancia Fulvia races on SRS on Saturday, going from second to first instead of second to third, but I think it's "all of them". Its price point is the most wallet-friendly of the bunch, but in practice it's also the most "expert-friendly", as you have to be very deliberate in your actions if you don't want to throw it in the wrong direction. I will be interested to see how I fare in my first season in the MX-5 Cup using this shifter (instead of cheating and using the paddles like I did when I didn't have the H-pattern yet).

I don't know if they revised them or what but I've never had an issue finding gears. It's nicer then some real cars driven. Try a classic car and you'll understand what slop is.

Just a note: the TH8A does allow you to increase the resistance quite a bit. You only mentioned it as a feature to the Fanatec, but the TH8A does it as well

Thanks for the test! The winner IMO is the Logitech, because of its cheap price, and its multi functions: you can use it both as a sequential shifter and a handbrake if you put a 40 mm rubber O-ring on it. I went down the rabbit hole as well and tested a ***load of shifters ending up staying with both separate H-Pattern and Seq. Shifter. My Thoughts: Fanatec: Great overall! but as what Chris explains... it comes at a costs. Almost 300 euro's if you don;t have a fanatec base is insane for what you get in my opinion. The Best H-Patern... but not a great Sequential. - Th8a: The modding community is going crazy with this one! And to be honest. Including those mods it is on par with the Fanatec one, only much smaller and cheaper. - SHH Shifter: 3d printed and relatively Cheap. Easily moddable. Not the best looking though, but it stays small which i like. Shifting is okay... nothing more than that! - Logitech G29 Shifter: Best bang for the buck. If you are handy making the adapter yourself is easy and it works great. I really like the looks of it. Plastic'y... but what do you expect! Shifts decent! - Thrustmaster Sparco Seq: Not a fan of it at all. Okay... it is a handbrake as well, but it is big and extremely loud. Besides it doesn't do both things great... - Aiologs: Nice little Shifter! Nice clicky sound and it shifts good! besides good looking! - Heusinkveld Seq Shifter: Even smaller! Not a big clicky sound, but if you are a night-driver that is what you are searching for! In the end i kept the Heusinkveld and the SHH Shifter (gave the G29 to a family Member). Why? SHH because it was a good bang for the buck and suits my rig well. I don't drive that much H patern, so it works for me. And Heusinkveld because i drive in the night with my Girlfriend sleeping in the room next to it. It keeps things quiet. besides that it is extremely small! (Oh yeah... i am, as Heusinkveld is, Dutch... For the love of the country!) Overall there is no bad shifter! Just some are better than others but this is fully in line with their pricepoint!

I thought this was a review of common shifters? I have been racing for years and have never heard of Aiologs. I don't use sequential shifters so this Aiologs thing is junk to me. I have paddle shifters on my wheel, no use for sequential shifters. Fanatec has nothing but issues breaking all the time and for $100 more than the Thrustmaster, is a joke. The TH8A has tension adustment inside the unit, there's a side hole on the unit to access with a screwdriver. It also comes with a clamp. Me thinks you bought a used unit and know very little of the product.

The market is ready for a new H Pattern shifters. Something between the Pro Sim by Quaife and the Fanatec. Something around the cost of the Frex but not the Frex. Better feeling then the Frex and Fanatec.

When I heard HE canceled it’s highly anticipated H pattern, they said it was a H and SQ combo. I’m thinking why? They already make a great compact SQ shifter. Why over complicate something that’s probably already over complex with functionality that you already offer in a standalone device?

A sequential shifter is the most redundant thing of all time. Almost all wheels come with paddles, and the point of buying a shifter is to have the full experience. To spend anything more than $20 on a sequential shifter is laughable to me.

Agreed, and you don't even need to spend on a pre-built one. I used an arcade stick with 2 switches, plug and play PCB and a gear knob and for that price I have a functional, if not the best feeling, sequential shifter.

I owned a version of the logitech shifter that came with a G27, and I actually liked it. I currently use a TH8A with my rig, which is great for serious racing, but the Logitech gives more of a "road car" feel. Just my $0.02 !

the aiologs is 170 usd nowadays .. thats closer to 250 for me as a canadian .. FAR from fair or cheap .. it still uses the old style of tech , not hal sensor .. not worth it to me

The Aiologs sounds enticing. I have the TH8A unfortunately the 9 pin socket on the cable failed outside of the warranty period , tried to fix it but in the end had to replace the entire board inside (cable and socket included), was not cheap but still much cheaper than the whole unit. Silly me! I kinda thought that the socket and plug was a bit tight and difficult to plug/unplug when it was under warranty. As always, Chris, Great content.
