Okay I'm a new Trash Taste viewer and I had NO CLUE Nano had been a guest. I was OBSESSED with Nano when I was 13. It was 2012, Nano was still faceless, and I remember staying awake for her livestreams. They were mainly in Japanese so I couldn't understand a word. Occasionally she'd speak briefly in English and I would practically jump up and down. I wanted to be her when I grew up. She's from New York; I'm from New York. That was all kid-me needed to fantasize about becoming a J-rock star. Nanoir was my middle school angst soundtrack. Nowadays, I follow her on insta but don't really keep up. I wish I had seen this episode when it first posted, and my inner child *really* wishes I could tell Nano how important they were to my childhood. 10 years later, I may not be a pro vocalist, but I'm at an intermediate level in Japanese and have made many online friends globally because of it. Anyway, now that I got that out of my system, I can actually watch the episode. 😅

Was lucky enough to see her perform at an anime convention once. She was full of energy and had genuine heart, consistently thanking the fans between every other song. About the Japanese Education experience if anyone's interested: 1/ Getting good grades doesn't make you cool but the weird part is you become kinda an outcast if you start getting bad grades. But just like other places the people who do other stuff besides studying have got good popularity. 2/ The Japanese kids study too much compared to a lot of countries. I have seen students who finish morning to afternoon school and then from afternoon till night study at cram school. At first, I thought it's just once or twice a week but then I kept on seeing the same students at the cram school I work at every single day. so 5 days a week school + cram school and when they don't have cram school they have clubs/circles. 3/ I also thought they get some kind of rest during weekends, but weekends are when cram schools make their main business. On weekends these kids almost stay 8 hours at the cram school. Even during Christmas break when school is off they go to cram school for 5 days straight 8 hours a day. It is crazier during Exam season. This is from my experience working at a cram school. But the weird part is I don't see many students complain but I see a few who look completely exhausted at the end of the day.

Yeah, that's a bit too much studying isn't it? And it's the same for work. They apply this all-in mentality to everything they do. No wonder there's so much suicide and aging population going on in that country, they don't take the time to enjoy the little things, to actually live, and raise families and such. Japan's population is slowly imploding. This is not right. Not sustainable for individuals and for the nation. A balance is required. But their pride won't allow it I suppose.

I think what Garnt says about a lot of these artists coming out from Vocaloid is true and a MAJOR example is Kenshi Yonezu who originally started with Vocaloid by the name of HACHI. He did very popular songs like Matryoshka, Open Close Demons and the Dead, Donut Hole, Panda Hero, etc. And now he's been featured in animes such as My Hero Academia with his song Peace Sign, and March Comes in Like a Lion with Orion. I think maybe another good example is Eve who recently was the one who did Kakai Kitan for Jujutsu Kaisen, and he's known as an utaite. He's also previously been in Dororo with his song Dark Night. To be honest, he was already somewhat well known for his song Dramaturgy and I genuinely think for a good reason, that song slaps and is one of my favorites. He also has a manga called Kara no Kioku which is also a song and I recommend you maybe check it out.

Had the privilege of being in an AFA concert with nano as one of the anisong singers in the lineup. Usually when there's a singer which I don't know the song I go "okay this song is not bad, but when is it going to end?" But for her, even though I didn't know all the songs she sang, she was able to hype the whole hall up with every song, and I enjoyed her segment more than I expected. Was a fun experience for me.
