0:00 Introductions
2:15 How did Mufti Abu Layth become a Mufti? His background. How Abdullah Gondal's background is similar to Mufti Abu Layth’s background.
16:15 How is Mufti Abu Layth's current view of the Quran different from his view when he was studying Islam 10 - 15 yrs ago. What is his view of things like jinns and Jesus raising the dead?
21:55 Why do people believe? The search for meaning in life - what does this process entail? Is it subjective or objective? How people make their own meaning.
26:01 Consciousness - What is it and how exactly does it work? Is there a Soul and what is it? Near-death experiences.
38:50 Religion provides people with a story that acts as a support system in their lives.
40:12 Religions are mutually exclusive and give people a false sense of hope. How do these stories give credence to the Islamic stories?
43:14 If the claims of the Quran are metaphorical truths then how is Mufti Abu Layth's position different from that of the Meccan Kafirs who were rebuked by Muhammad?
48:20 Which stories and miracles in the Quran Moses, Jesus, Noah are real events, and which ones are metaphors? What are miracles? How many of these stories are actual facts? How should the Quran relate to individual Muslims? The question of morality.
1:05:30 The Quran - Is it a divinely inspired miracle or just the works of humans?
1:11:06 Who had the best understanding of the Quran?
1:18:56 Why Mufti Abu Layth believes in the Quran? Why does he think that the Quran is so unique such that it can only have come from a God?
1:32:10 The Quran does not provide a framework upon which Muslims are supposed to improve their morality to suit the modern context. Does this make the Mufti and other Muslims moral subjectivists?
1:36:25 Can we discard the teachings on Hudood and where does this leave the Quran in terms of it being a moral compass? What is sharia law and what purpose does it save?
1:48:20 Break
1:49:40 Is the Mufti okay with flirting, birth control, and pre-marital sex?
1:57:01 Given the changing role of women in the modern world, Can women lead prayers and take up religious roles in the mosque?
1:58:36 Is LGBTQ+ halal or haram?
2:03:35 Mufti's opinion on celebrating Christmas, Easter, valentine?- The identity politics that comes with this.
2:10:01 The idea of Kaaba and the black stone - was this an original Islamic idea or was it borrowed from other cultures? Given that Islam borrows from other cultures, what unique thing does Islam provide the people?
2:15:36 Can non-Muslims go to Jannah? Is heaven symbolical? What happens in the afterlife?
2:21:25 Does Mufti Abu Layth identify with Muʿtazila?
2:23:57 Are Ahmadiyyas Muslims and do they get to go to Jannah?
2:25:33 Is the seal of the prophet hood essential to Islam? Is the Quran obsessed with the afterlife?
20:30:50 Are weed and alcohol halal or haram?
2:34:30 Mufti Abu Layth's take on the Dawah boys - Not understanding the obsession with converting people to Islam.
2:40:20 Mufti Abu Layth's message to the audience
2:45:20 Final remarks.

This is very nice mufti very well mannered and open minded compared to other islamic muftis. Only thing is a lot of his views and understanding of Islam seem reformed. Speaking as a past devout muslim I can't seem to link what I've read in the Quran and sahih hadeeths with a lot of what he says and I find myself scratching my head thinking where is his evidence where is he getting his thinking? Granted I'm not an expert by any means but can only go off my experience. Also much of his views are classified as heretical by other mufti and scholars. Many of their objections to Mufti Abu Layth are here on youtube. I do think if the islamic world adopted more of his way/view there would be less problems in Islam's relationship with non-muslims and other Muslims particularly Shia and Sufi muslims.He is admirable if I had to be Muslim I'd follow his school of thought.

You have got to love Mufti, awesome guy and very open minded. But struggled to articulate some views that are really stretching in meaning here ie consciousness, stories in Quran etc. I share some of of his views on allegorical meaning behind these stories but doesn’t really hold up to scrutiny when tested. It’s an easy position to take in order to make sense of these stories but in many cases don’t hold a moral lesson and is simply focusing on supernatural events so therefore appear redundant?

Did Allah clarify? No. Muftis like this nowadays say these things because there is more pressure given that communication has become easy because if the internet and information is easily available. This is pure voodoo and pseudoscience. Where people like deepak chopra abs his like make their careers. No difference to a psychic trying to unite that with science.

Why so many people find this man so profound is beyond me. Everything he says has to be qualified with " i believe ..." or " i dont believe..." versus what is actually written and understood by the masses. Poor old Abdullah Gondal finds himself - as many skeptics including Sam Harris have found themselves: "Nailing jelly to a wall". Oh my goodness. I like this guy Layth for his laugh and friendliness. And especially sympathised with him when he had an extremely difficult snd frustrating time in a video recorded "discussion" debate with a certain salafist fundamentalist some months back. But here sadly Abu Layth shows himself to be not much more intellectually than the equivalent of an Islamic Jordan Peterson. And there is an expression that has been used with regard to similar discussions between detractors of religion /sceptics - or even a fundamentalist and certain breeds of liberal theologian. And it is.... nailing jelly to the wall. Its a simple device or approach that Abu Laith has fallen for and I don't think he knows he's even doing it himself. He is simply using the fact of multiple meanings for words to divert himself from questions that need answering. "Truth". Jordan Peterson did exactly the same in two Harris interviews and in doing so immediately lost my respect. One *has* to agree on how two parties are to use certain words in a conversation and then agree not to do any bait-and-switch. Its not clear Abu Layth actually realises this is what he is doing. I suspect he doesn't. Thus he is in fact just fooling himself.
@sugetsumillenium2112
@sugetsumillenium2112 5 жыл бұрын
It's the way he talks, and the way abstract-minded people like Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson talk, do you know why it feels like nailing jelly on the wall? Because they have to think about the point and talk about it to get to the point, they go around in a circle then go back. You just don't understand psychology my friend

Mufti Abu Layth does reference his opinions in line with some past scholars even though it may oppose the majority mainstream position in many cases...Truth can sometimes be with the minority.. and that minority can bring about change through truth and justice...examples from the past include fighting for womens right to vote...or Ali and vietnam...However the other side of the coin is that in many cases the minority opinion can be extreme and illogical like we see with intolerant extremists in society and some other groups.
@empress2423

I thing that Abu Layth answered clear to all the questions, but he is following a religion invented by him, more similar to Judaism in many fields, than Islam. Were he used that "tactic" of diverting himself as Peterson? multiple meanings for a word?

Mufti Layth is a nice guy trying to tread fine line between not completely saying he doesn't accept Islam and that it is one big lie and keeping his stature as Mufti within his community and family. At the end of the day he would need to find a way to reconcile the two and be true to himself and remain a leader to his community without alienating them.

If anyone in the world didn’t care about what people think it’s mufti Abu layth, just look at the way he dresses and look at the way he’s made an outcast by salafi youtubers, you actually think he cares? The most important thing to him is to stay truth to who he is, it’s unfortunate that u translate this into “he’s thinking about leaving Islam” because you’ve now missed the point, of anything mohamad hijab and Ali dawah and farid responds and dawah man would be more likely to leave Islam than mufti Abu layth

Exactly. Nothing about him points towards him being a Muslim. He literally has earings and a fancy haircut while calling himself a mufti. No follower of the true Islam would condone his beliefs or actions. Perhaps he likes the fame. How on earth can he remain a Muslim when there's so much evidence against Islam.

There lots of folks this Mufti style without being called "muftis" they have other names... Lots of those exist in Judaism and Sikhism as well. They don't really different from Atheists but they hate to be compared to them. Because being a believer and a 'religiously affiliated person" is still a social credit for "Decency" and even "Acceptance". As long as there will be a stigma against Atheists those people who twist religion to whatever civilized society "wishes to respect" people like Mufti will on demand.

Question - conversion from Islam is not a new thing. Malta, for instance, was mostly Muslim until the 12th century, and its language remains Arabic-based to this day. Parts of Spain used to be majority-Muslim, that were eventually converted to Christianity. Where's the jihad against those places?

There were crypto Muslims in Al Andalus both Portugal and Spain even after 1492 and until 1609. It took over 100 years to expel the converts and new Christians who had loyalty issues. Malta and some parts of Sicily is the only case where it happened successfully.

Sameer , the solution is not the amicable views given by a liberal muslim, the problem is that the core of quran , hadiths , sunnah is violent, hateful and derogatory to women and non muslims, therefore any attempts at peaceful interpretation of quran and hadiths are bound to fail because a liberal interpretation can easily by replaced by a hard core interpretation, see the state of Indonesia and to some extent Bangladesh, these otherwise liberal countries are hurtling towards Islamic extremism.

Yeah such a long and deep chat... I'm going to listen again. Why people "believe" in religions? because in order to believe in science only, in the inductive rationing, people must accept to live in uncertainty, into not having all the answers about the universe /life beginning, past present and future, while religions supply all the deductive answers! In timeline hour 01:35+ "Jews took they Rabbis & priests as lords:. The main point is: is non of Muhammad or his Allah speaking in his head's business, what Jews, do or doesn't do. Judaism is a non missionary group of people, absolutely not into converting people!, who respect other believes. Jews can take cats, a dragon, a unicorn?as a lord, whatever!, is non of anyone business. In timeline hour 01:50+ Mutah temporary marriage on order to allow pre marital sex... what about a father of 7, Nikah Mutah women behind the back of his wife, in order to cheat on her? As is pal Nouman Ali Khan? Aww I forgot: by him humans are not monogamy. Yeah, what about the culture, science, society progressed and advanced as in the western world where he chooses to live, due to the monogamy society, where having sex in addition to the partner, is seen in a negative way? while Polygyny, backward societies in the world? remain them backwards... So Mufti Abu Layth, keep dreaming about sex with multiple women!, or move to some backward society in the Middle East, Africa, etc. In timeline hour 01:59 Pakistani men are Bi sexual? that might/may be right for most of men in the world? and that was common in societies in the iron age, while sex between man (is not clear in the Bible if the prohibition includes oral sex), was prohibited in the Jews Bible. Today? we don't live in such society, so there is no need to ban gays, as they are a small percentage of the population. In Timeline hour 02:08 Muhammad "affiliated" to Jews? He identified which the Jews?? Nope, he obviously was envy of the Jews in timeline hour 02:15 & 02:23 If by his "believe" all people can go to Heaven without being tortured in a Hell before, with no need to convert? then, he is following Judaism, not Islam, not Muhammad. Jews have no problem believing that there is no "special" reward for Jews in Heaven, because by Judaism? all good people go to the same Heaven as the Jews, and no need to convert. We find this reasonable and right. ... and I LOVE we "muslims" refer to the Quran saying " In the times of the Prophet", the only problem is that I cannot find those words on the Quran, a book made, intentionally, with no context of specific time or place
