I had a blast speaking to Mufti Abu Layth from Birmingham about Islam, science and reality. He was very kind to speak to me and give me much of his time. I would like to encourage further discussion and debate in a cordial manner. Both Ex Muslims and Muslims should seek to build bridges and increase live and understanding of one another!
Peace!

I don’t even care about the specifics of the conversation. I really am just glad that a Muslim and an ex-Muslim can sit together and have a laugh means a whole lot. Let’s keep normalizing decent because it doesn’t have to be a conflict. Peace ✌🏾 and thank you 🙏🏾 Veedu for bringing this type of conversation to us.

Great discussion that resembles many of my own with my friends and acquaintances. Halfway through the video I realized that the basic barrier to understanding the religious framework is a shift in the paradigm of thought. What many people don't realize is the standard they apply to religion as an abstract is not the same standard they use to analyze every other abstract in their life. They hold religion on a different level, of what you can call absolutism, that has to fit within the criteria of their current paradigm of thought. Many non-religious people use a scientific paradigm to verify an abstract concept like religion or faith, but then fail to use the same reasoning for all of the other abstracts in their surrounding life. This barrier is what I have begun to refer to as the 'Brain' boundary, because the scientific paradigm is one founded on Reason or Logic and is primarily found within the brain organ. Faith and Religion does not come from Logic, it comes from Intuitive Feeling which is a function of the Heart. We've recently discovered that the Heart is not just a vessel to pump blood but has greater electrical output than the brain and functions as another locus of intelligence. The same can be said of the Digestive System which makes inputs directly to the Brain through the Vagus Nerve and has been manipulated by gut microflora to influence behavior. What many intellectuals have failed to realize is that they have limited their own understanding of reality by relying solely on their brain organ to 'think'.

It seems that Mufti is giving us a basic lesson in basic Philosophy, it maybe worth watching Firas Zahabi or any one else for that matter. Mufti made some very profound/simple points, yet it seems Veedu and his especially his friend in the background (towards the end) could not grasp. I do believe Veedu is sincere. Seems like a nice guy, lol his friend seems to get frustrated and keeps mixing "observation" for science. Observation doesn't equate science.

What I would say to people saying that Muft Abu Layth is being disingenuous, in representing Islam, is that he is being as honest as he can be. Now, sure your traditional view of Islam may not be compatible with his interpretation but that is exactly what he is reconciling when he accepts that the traditional view was made to serve the requirements of the past, and that is what Muslims have lost the sight of. Also, viewing Islam as an artistic expression is the way to go about it, imo, because it takes away its ability to become dogmatic. You eliminate an ideology that big, which holds power over so many people, by actively warring against it. Honestly, you don't have to. Just try to create an alternate meme that is superior (taking out the bad aspects) to the previous one.

And there never came an apostle to them but they mocked him. 12. Thus do We make it to enter into the hearts of the guilty; 13. Very interesting conversation. The Mufti here deserves respect for being honest with reasoning and known truths. He actually makes an effort to determine what is a fact and what's just kind of inherited belief. Actually any faith was first determined by fact and logical examination of what's happened and then people decided whether something is scientifically and circumstancially explainable (according to their times and knowledge). If something was not, but showed some kind of unexplainable power and affect on reality then it would be considered as miracle and proof of existence of the misterious and powerful being called God. Then the religion with all its rules and regulations trying to subordinate to this great power would also create the fear of unforseen consequences with equally unexplainable (as miracles) horrors that would await those who didn't comply with mass accepted beliefs. That also was not explainable by the masses why something obvious could be questioned by the people who think for themselves so they'd be included into the category of horrors that dares to destroy the agreed upon version of reality.
@jolaola1987
@jolaola1987 4 жыл бұрын
So later there was big discussion about what is and what is not real. What is or isn't true or verifiable, what is just a concept. I think that the only truth is just our experience, our presence of "I am that I am" and all the reality that we live in is just abstract concepts that we create out of thin air. Of course it means that we do live in an illusion but that doesn't mean the illusion isn't real or true, because it has results and consequences on the quality and sort of our experience. So by creating illusory concepts we affect the reality of our experience. Weather it is philosophical concept, vibration of sound, or a materialised concept of a table that you can touch, these are all illusory concepts that become real as soon as they affect our perception. And perception can be affected immediately or in further subtle ways but it's still the same mechanism.

I'm halfway through and so far it seems that what veedu Is getting at is that "real" is things we can verify through our senses. Therefore even music is real in that sense as we can verify it through or sense of hearing. laws on the other hand are man made concepts that we use as they provide us with value and utility. The problem with religions are that they have many stories and make many claims which appear to be occuring in the reality which we perceive through our senses but when we actually try to test these things we find them to be unverifiable or with evidence to the contrary.

Great that you're having these discussions! In my opinion most of the 'objective' and 'true' part is hair-splitting. Philosophically and sceptically, 'I think therefore I am' is the only thing that we can say is 'objectively true'. You have to exist in some form to ponder reality. Nothing else can meet this standard. But comparing music and colour to religion is intellectually dishonest. Music and colour do not make unfalsifiable claims of something beyond nature, religions do. Who would even argue that music is 'true' in an objective sense, without someone to make it and someone to listen to it? I would have no problem with something that provides meaning to people, if these notions of creation, soul, sin, the right way to live and after-life had no consequences in our shared reality (e.g. religious politicians influencing laws, faith schools) and did not defy logic. Maybe we will never know whether Jesus is the son of God, a prophet or a motivational speaker that took it to a new level, but pretending to know and believing in it can be worse than saying 'I don't know'.

It´s very simple. We are the creators of the world that we percieve. However this world we percieve is not the objectively or absolutely real world. The realities of it are of course perceptible to us, like sound waves making up music. But sound or music itself has no existence outside of our percieved world. Our percieved world only exists with all the names and definitions we have given it as long as we are around. Therefore arriving at any objective truths is impossible. The Muftis point was about whether we are able to affirm or deny either proposition of God existing or not existing, for which the aforementioned is relevant. Therefore any statements we make must necessarily require us to take this claimed truth into consideration.

If Jesus had a father as you claim 17.00 why does Allah only mentions the mother and not the father. Why is Only Mary given the high status.? Why does Jesus have the title Esa ibn Maryum?
@CHEBOYKA
@CHEBOYKA 4 жыл бұрын
Well regardless whether Mary later had a husband or not, she is the one that angels spoke to and gave good tidings of the great offspring (Jesus) that she was going to receive. She was chosen by God all along. Or are you saying why wasn't the name of the father mentioned somewhere? That's a good question. I don't know. When it comes to her status, we as men proudly look up to her (and as per Quran we should). And as a woman, I can only imagine, you have an even greater appreciation of her and the fact that she as a woman is honored so immensly by God in the Quran.

It would be so much easier to spread the messages across in today's time if there was a prophet or Angel sent down. 4) if Muhammed was the best example for all of mankind than why is it that we do not see a 9 year girl getting married with 50 year old man in todays time. " I believe sound is real It is there regardless of weather your ear receives the frequencies or vibrations" Could you rationalize that so i can understand? I like that subject matter. From what i understand from the video is that we have eardrums that resonate with the pressure waves traveling trough air. They modulated into information to be received by our brains. Interpretation and value judgement aside, if this (physical) model that causes us to "hear", was constructed any different, what would we “hear” than? Would we "hear" at all? Maybe we would "see" the waves haha. So yeah in our rational world only the pressure waves are "TRUE". But even that only exists in our consciousness. Everything does. So absolute truths can never be established by us humans, it would be always lead to circular reasoning. Most scientists (Muslim and non-muslim alike) that know the philosophy of science, know this. Scientific truths and absolute truths are not the same. YES there are absolute truths, but we can never know them, we can only choose to believe them or not.

I suppose it applies both ways then ▪▪▪> " there is no one as blind as he who refuses to see " Today i am an agnostic. @@owaisbukhari5263 what i find most difficult to understand about islam is how millions of people fail to see how Muhammad is a flawed man and they continue to celebrate him as perfect. He is far from a good role model, especially in today's world. They also claim the Quran to be a perfect and miraculous document when it's riddled with errors. One needs not to be anti-islam to see them. But Muslims tend to explain them away. Having a rebuttle doesnt mean it is a good one. Consider these situations as an example : 1. Muhammad's first wife was filthy rich. She was much older than him ( these are not problems ). It was Khatijah and her uncle who convinced him that he is a prophet after the "angel" assaulted him. 2. His last wife was a mere child. Couldnt Allah have found another way for him to care for her instead of causing generations to come so much dispute and embarrasssment and debate . Till today, there are people who use his example to justify child abuse in this context. 3. His second wife was worried in her old age that he would discard her. So she offered up her night to be with him. He gladly accepted it to be with one of the younger ones. Worse still, he said it's condoned by Allah 4. He married his adopted son's wife simply because he fancied her. It's even suggested that she is a blood cousin, which is genetically unhealthy. In the process to justify it, he discouraged adoption. Also uses Allah to support his desires. 5. The story of Hafsa and Maryam the Copt. He literally lies to Hafsa to get her out of the house so that he could sleep with Marysm. And got caught. Tries to silence Hafsa but the other wives found out anyway. Then uses God and fearmongering to defend himself. These are just a few examples of many. One issue out of many. Any neutral person with two sense can see him for what he is. If anybody else had done these things, you wouldnt hesitate to call him out on it. Or worse, punish him. I'm not making these things up..it's in the Quran, sahih and non-sahih hadith and the sira. Look it up. Again, i would caution you this. Having an explanation doesnt mean it's a good one. Apologists, for ages, have tried to whitewash common sense with hypocrisy and linguistic gymnastics. How do you expect a lay person to look at these issues and accept that this man is a prophet?

The very last part, where hearing and visual faculties were discussed was interesting. But my expectation of the discussion leading to an enquiry of: *_what it is_*_ that senses whatever that is sensed,_ was thwarted. Here is a Vedic perspective on the matter from the *Kena Upanishad* Part 1: 4. That which is unexpressed by the word, that by which the word is expressed, know That to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here. 5. That which thinks not by the mind, that by which the mind is thought, know That to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here. 6. That which sees not with the eye, that by which one sees the eye’s seeings, know That to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here. 7. That which hears not with the ear, that by which the ear’s hearing is heard, know That to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here. 8. That which breathes not with the breath, that by which the life-breath is led forward in its paths, know That to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here. As far the Qur'anic response that compares Jesus to Adam is concerned, I think the point of it is to appeal to reason with Christians when discussing the special Divine status they attribute to Jesus as the "only begotten son" of God because they believe he was born without a father. This status is rendered less "miraculous" and significant via the analogy of comparing his creation to that of the first human being Adam who was created by God's own "hands" so to speak from wet clay in which God "breathed" into him something of his Own spirit, and hence without both a mother and father, a belief which both Christians and Muslims share. There was no need to rebuke the idea of the virgin birth in these verses because it isn't really a point of contention as Muslim and Christian conceptions of God wholeheartedly allow for this possibility.
